each.Special General meeting – Election of a President
The Chairman advised that notice was given on 15th December 2016 of a Special General Meeting to be held on Friday 17th February to elect a President. As no nominations for the position had been received by the Secretary by 3rd February, he called for nominations from the floor. The Secretary confirmed that this is the procedure required by the Club Rules.Brian McMillan nominated Bruce McPhail and advised that Bruce is overseas at the moment and has agreed to his nomination.Doug Young seconded the nomination.The Chairman called for further nominations. None were received.The Chairman called for objections to the nomination. There was a query from the flooras to whether someone could be nominated in absentia. The Secretary advised that it is not prohibited in the Club Rules.The Chairman declared that in the absence of other nominations for the position, BruceMcPhail is elected as the President of the Vintage Car Club of Queensland Inc.The Chairman requested that Brian obtain Bruce’s written acceptance.

General Business:1. Rights and roles of “Partners”: The Chairman advised that the Committee has
investigated the various options to allow spouses and partners to have more formal involvement and will report in detail at the next meeting because the requirements of the Associations Incorporations Act 1981, its Regulations and theClub Rules together with Public Liability Insurance and QHMC fees make the situation quite complicated.
2. Clubroom upgrade: The Secretary noted the new large fans (which those on the floor thought very effective), the partially upgraded PA system [not yet complete to the Secretary’s understanding of the VCCA(Q) Tenant’s meeting] andthe reconfigured lighting.
3. Lease Agreement for Club Room: The Committee has reviewed the VCCA(Q) proposed lease agreement and it will be signed on behalf of the Club by the President and Secretary.
New Business:1. Concours d’Elegance 2017: Brian McMillan advised that he recently inspected
the Carrington Rocks Boat Club park area at Corinda, near to the Arboretum where the Club used to hold the annual Concours. He believes that it would be suitable for our Concours and although the club has previously agreed to return to Ormiston House, no booking has been made there and this may be an interesting change.Brian proposed that the 2017 VCCQ Concours d’Elegance be held at the Boat Clubin 2017. Seconded by Wolf Grodd.There were various speakers for and against.The Chairman called for a vote. Carried

3. Fund Raising Event: The Committee has requested that Doug Young investigate a good red and white wine for the Club to label.
4. Luxury Car Tax on Vintage and Classic Vehicles: The Chairman reported that vintage vehicles imported into Australia are subject to Luxury Car Tax irrespective of their age or heritage value. One effect of this is to prevent vintage cars once exported from Australia from ever returning. Wolf Grodd gavean example where about $1.0M was denied to Australia business. The Club is not aware of any effective action by QHMC, AHMF and others who have stated that they sorting this out. The Club believes that restriction on the entry of vintage cars into Australia was not the original intent of the legislation and has requested Doug Young to investigate and prepare a submission for the Commonwealth Government to remove this restriction.
Cars, Parts and Services: Jeff Jones advised that he is selling his workshop equipment and was requested to list items for the Magazine.

VISION: It's all about good news and proper machinery.I was talking to retiring events CEO Ronnie about having another look at the survey she did in 2013. Not much had changed in what we were doing since then. It's just that it's hard to get members to organise the doings.While we have over 100 members it's only about 30% who get involved in events. The other 70% probably no longer intend to attend and are only there to lend their support.Many thanks to those supporting members for without their contribution we would not beable to pay our bills. Rent, insurances and auditors fees take virtually all our membershipfees. It's only our raffles and occasional wine sales that give us spending money.Looking at our constitution the objectives of our club are still very pertinent.We are in the business of looking after and enjoying our vehiclesThe objects for which the Association is established are:-A) To foster interest in the history and preservation of Veteran, Edwardian, Vintage, PostVintage Thoroughbred and Classic motor cars, as defined elsewhere in the Rules.(B) To assist Members in the acquisition, restoration and maintenance of these cars.(C) To provide facilities for the exchange of information among Members, and to act in any way which will promote a continued interest in the preservation of the vehiclesand books, films, lantern slides, records, catalogues and all similar matter concerning them.(D) To promote competitions, trials and other events in which such vehicles can participate.Also our membership criteria is relevant.Full Membership : This is open, at the Club’s discretion, to enthusiasts of Pre-war qualityvehicles, with or without an eligible vehicle.
It was great to receive (since the last meeting) an unsolicited application for membershipfrom a gentleman who does not own a suitable car but wanted to add his support. How good is that?
Our ageing membership.We seem to be having a more than usual number of our older members experiencing health problems. The curve is starting to ramp upwards. Several of our long term members have been doing it tough. We wish them well.
SUNBEAM CARS.The two Sunbeam stories in theFebruary mag generated quite a bitof response. The big bloke (BrianDeMamiel) talking to MargaretMcPhail outside the Cambooya pubon p28 of the Feb mag was at PointTurton on the York Peninsula recentlyand one of his neighbours said heowned an old Sunbeam. He sentBrian a pic and he sent it on to me. Ithen sent it on to PjR and asked if heknew the car. Naturally, he did aswell as all its details and the owner, Lew Rainer.

Had an email from Moya Sharp from the State Library of WA's Outback Family History office, http://www.outbackfamilyhistory.com.au/ She was very interested in Peter's story and sent me a file with many great pics from Kalgoorlie pre 1940. The car here is of a 1913 Sunbeam 12-16 at the local racetrack.
The second picture is labelled “Iceworks picnic”. The car on the right is also a Sunbeam, probably a 1914 12-16. It has Holland Covers over the upholstery (just visible on the driver's side) and that third headlight. All the other lights are electric, so is this for emergencies? Maybe there's a Prestolite tank somewhere. The windscreen is more like the regular Sunbeam job.

Another great pic is of this magnificent beast labelled “FN of Mr Agnew”. The experts tell me it is in fact a Darracq.
FROM GAVIN MUTTON'S STORY ON THE BANK CARS.Hello Brian,I was most interested in the article on Sunbeams. I have recently read about the 12-16 Sunbeam at Lake Perkolilli in “Red Dust Racers” – itis a great car (and I recommend the book, with lots of period photos)I knew Gordon Davis, son of Harry Davis, well. Gordon started as an apprentice mechanic in 1943 at the Bank of NSW, working on the Sunbeams during WW2 before joining the army; he was later a driver, and eventually became Transport Manager, still inthe garage at Pyrmont. I actually did some work there – the day before I was to leave to drive down to Sandown to race my MGTC in about 1976 I found the clutch slipping. Gordon said I could use a bay in the workshop so I went in early, replaced the clutch, and was on my way at lunchtime. I also used the lathe one weekend because of its long bed.This lathe was probably the same one Gordon spoke of the Chief Mechanic Sid using to rebuild a Sunbeam engine during WW2 – new pistons were not available but sleeves were, so the block was sleeved undersized, the pistons machined to suit and new rings made. He often spoke of Sid and the procedures of the time, including pouring and fittingbearings, blacksmithing fittings, and body building.It was Gordon’s descriptions of Sunbeams that got me interested in them, leading me to buy my 20/60 from Peter Ransom (unfortunately after Gordon’s death so he never saw it) and now another Sunbeam project, which is why I am selling the 20/60.He said the Sunbeams with English bodies often cracked through the A pillars which was the reason BNSW preferred locally built bodies, using Diskon and Molyneux to body the cars, and also the cash trucks.Gavin Mutton refers to number plates and mascots – 1817 (the year the bank was started) was later reserved for the Director’s car, together with the mascot, which was the ‘Telcote Pup’. In the 50s a replica was made for security and attached to the car, and Gordon had the original, unfortunately I have no idea where it is now. I don’t know whenthe policy started, but all the cars in the 60s and 70s were dark blue.

Following security scares in the 70’s such identifying marks were removed.The car shown in Gavin’s article, registered BNW 898, I think is the special 1934 20hp, which Gordon understood to be the same as the 25hp but a narrower bore, one of the last built, and imported as a chassis for Diskon and Molyneux to build a body for Sir Alfred Davidson. The body was a ‘town car’ with no boot, special effort was put into it, and it cost 2-3 times that of other bodies. The decorative woodwork inside was all solid, not veneered. It was registered 313 and never used for carrying cash. During the war it was stored as it was considered unsuitable for wartime fuels and Fords were used. In time the Bank disposed of it and Gordon’s father purchased it. Perhaps the photo was taken during his ownership, maybe even in the drive of their house in Lindfield. The car was sold because of insufficient spares support although still in very good order. It passed through several hands, including traveling to Queensland, before Gordon purchased it in largely dismantled condition. It was completely refurbished and returned to superb condition. As with all his cars, great care and effort was expended in making it oil and water tight, and run smoothly and quietly. As far as I remember, VW pistons werefitted during the rebuild. After Gordon’s death in 2000 the car was sold and went to England.The other Sunbeam Gordon owned was a 1927 16hp roadster which he bought from Terry Hannan. This car was also refurbished but Gordon was not able to take it on the open road before his death. It was also sold and remains in Sydney.Regards, Rees Mackay

at the top of the North Island. When in Invercargill they looked at Richardsons Transport museum, The Motorcycle Mecca and E Hayes.I took my 1930 Astondown to show theflag. Brian, Attached is a photo of my Grandfather’s Wolseley winning the 1917 RACQ Best Decorated Car.In the car from the rear are Stanley Hancock, grandmother Mary Isabella Hancock, Gladys Hancock, grandfather Josias Henry Hancock, Managing Director of Hancock and Gore Limited and Roy Hancock. BRISBANE HISTORY.Long, long ago the small triangular piece of land above the Queensland Maritime Museumhad three homes andthe South Brisbane firestation on it.The home nearest theShip Inn was owned byDr. Thomas Lucas ofPapaw ointment fame.On its south westernside was the Markwellfamily home and thenthe fire station.SE of the Lucas homelived Henry Haseler(Register of births,deaths and marriages).

After the first world war these homes were all demolished and a memorial park was established. A wide flight of stairs was built down to the area beside the Ship Inn. On thisflight of stairs a plinth was built on which was planned to be mounted a statue of a serviceman.Unfortunately, before it could be finished the South Brisbane Council and the Brisbane City Council were amalgamated in 1925 and funds were spent elsewhere.The plinth has stood statue-less for more than 90 years.Members of the Naval Association, Qld section, decided it was time to put a statue on theplinth. They raised the money and had a two metre high bronze statue of a sailor built, and made applications to erect the statue.It has taken three years to get the required paperwork through the State Govt., the BCC,the South Bank corporation and the Department of Veteran's Affairs.Three years of planning have now progressed to the final stages of manufacturing the statue and plinth along with several dedication plaques which will be placed on and around the plinth. These plaques show the Tan's involvement in major conflicts and operations by naming the ships involved or by the Battle Honours awarded:
a. RAN Dedication Plaqueb WW1,c WW2,d Korean War,e F.E.S.R./Malayan Emergency/Indonesian-Malaysian Confrontation,f Vietnam War,g MEAO/Peacekeeping/Peacemaking Operations.
The planned date/time for the unveiling is Saturday, 27th May, 2017, at 1pm.

Dean Pangley and Christine also attended having driven their Ghost up to David Ford's in Stanthorpe for some TLC.We started with morning tea at Glengallan Homestead, then a guided tour of Warwick and a lunch at the Nursery. We then went to the museum at Pringle Cottage and then home.
VVTE Sunday February 28 meeting.Last year your editor joined the Vintage Vehicle Touring Enthusiasts Club in the hope of going on a Vintage Car Club rally with some vintage cars.All these beaut cars came along. I have not seen such a turnout in years and the lunch was great. Well chosen Betty. Rissoles and veges for $10.90. Wonderful.

Dear members of the Jaguar fraternity,It is my sad duty to inform you that our much loved and respected patron Bill Pitt passedaway on Thursday night.Bill was a fine 90 years of age and, until recently, bright and alert and enjoying life.Bill became our patron in 1992, so has been involved in club events for around 25 years. He has attended and spoken at many events and handed out awards on various occasions.At our 25th Anniversary Bill was our guest of honour and presented us with his racing helmet from the 50s and 60s. This is a club treasure and is kept in the club trophy cabinets.As one of the last remaining Jaguar legends it was our honour to have Bill as our patron for these 25 years. Bill Pitt’s history with Jaguar extends back to the 50s when, in partnership with Georgie Anderson, under the Westco banner, he raced an XK 120, D Type and most famously the 3.4 “Mk 1” which brought him so many victories.In the Mk 1 Bill won the 1960 NSW Touring Car Championship and the Queensland Road Racing Championship (at Lowood). The following year Bill achieved even greater heights with the Mk 1, winning the 1961 Australian Touring Car Championship, again at Lowood.Despite all of these achievements (and many more) Bill remained a humble and absolutely delightful person.We extend our deepest sympathies to Bill’s family and will represent the JDCQ at Bill’s farewell service.Tony HeraldPresident JDCQEd. OZ DAY REDLAND STYLE. AUSTRAYA DAY 2017:The day started off as pleasantly cool but became uncomfortably hot and sultry as the day progressed.The attendance at the BaysideVehicle Restorers Australia Daycar tour was a total of 562vehicles of which there wereonly 20 odd pre 1940s cars:-1 D type Vauxhall, 1 14/40Vauxhall and a 1920s Rolls-Royce Coupe.The others were Fords, Chevs,Chryslers, a Cadillac, anOakland and 2 Austin 7s whichwas disappointing.I sighted 2 other VCCQmembers – Rob Gabb sansAlvis (which is in bits-- again),Greg Riddel with a red Porschecoupe of 1950s vintage andChris Pike with his ‘black iron’Jaguar.The BVRC won the award for its community work in the Redlands.The unwashed masses were treated to a free breakfast sausage filled bread roll with bacon and onion and non alcoholic drinks.End of report. A recent BMW bike mag featured some of the history linking SEQ with France. As we are going to Stanthorpe in May, I extracted a bit of the story from their mag. Thanks to Tony Gray.
‘Armistice Way’ is a loop drive of some 30+km commencing at Amiens Road off the Texas Road as it exits Stanthorpe and finishes back on the N-E Hwy at Thulimbah where coffee can be had at Jersey Girls Cafe. This road takes you through the districts of Amiens, Bapaume and Pozieres with Passchendaele and Pozieres State Forests along the way. These districts were originally linked by rail with other station names of Messines,

Bullecourt and Fleurbaix. The old name boards are preserved at the Stanthorpe HistoricalMuseum which is next door to the Top of the Town Tourist Park where we stayed. We were familiar with all of these sites with the exception of Fleurbaix. A little research revealed that the infamous battle fought around Fleurbaix is most commonly known by the name of the adjacent village of Fromelles. Fleurbaix sat behind Allied lines while Fromelles sat behind German lines. On 19 July 1916 some 5,500 Australian Troops were killed at Fromelles in a fruitless and misguided attack on the German Line making it the worst day in Australian Military History.After the War returning troops were offered land grants under a Soldier Settlement Scheme to provide them with post war employment. Some of those demobbed troops took up allocations in the Summit area and the fruits of their labour (pun intended) can now be seen in the rich crops of stone fruit that dominate the area. There is a memorial along the ride at Amiens which records the names of those who took up plots under the Soldier Settlement Scheme. Now, on or about the 100th anniversary of those battles of 1916/17, it is fitting that we pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by those young men and appreciate and respectthe legacy that they have left the following generations. Take a ride through the area and spare a thought and prayer for those young men that time will never weary nor the years condemn. Lest we forget.

A "hairpin" corner round a house followed. This he would take with remarkable skill and alacrity, because at this corner he was always sniped. Into the final straight the despatch rider rode for all he was worth. MORE LINKS FROM BRUCE SMEATON.Hi Brian, This was an interview on a very rainy last Sunday at a carpark in Adelaide. The bloke is Andrew Mitchell, and the car is the fastest Amilcar CGS (or Grand Sport) in the world. It was imported into Australia as a rolling chassis and bodied in Adelaide. Always fitted with a MAG (Swiss) supercharger, this car has rarely been off the road, has never been restored but was found in a wrecker’s yard by Andrew’s late father Murray who collected, restored and used veteran and vintage cars and raced, as indeed does Andrew.This is not one of those modern vanity specials posing as an historic car but the real thing and all Amilcar, with a factory engine, gearbox, drive train, chassis and running gear. On current gearing the top speed is 220 kph and it gets up there very fast. Andrew has won the FTD in his class at Collingrove as well as often bettering the times of competitors in other classes. At one time this car was owned by a bloke who went rabbiting. He split open the Pointe Bordino tail (ends in a vertical line rather than a point, used by Bugatti and others and pioneered by F.I.A.T as they then were) infilled the gap with mesh and kept his ferrets in the tail. 70 years on you can still smell them. Another owner was a powder monkey by day and a safe cracker by night who holidayed at the government’s expense every now and again. It was while he was doing a stretch that his creditors obtained a court order enabling them to seize and sell his assets to settle his debts. There were many Amilcars and they were sold to a wrecker. WHAT YOU MISSED.Annual joint run with the veterans to Suttons Beach – February 12.Youse are a mob of whimps. Justbecause the BOM predicted a tempfor the day of about 48c everyonebut 3 vets and 3 vintage carsturned up.Those that did make it had a greattime on this beautiful stretch ofbeach.I left home at 5am and motored ondeserted roads right across town.The return trip was 70% in thetunnel, missing most of the heat.It was good to talk with the vets,most of whom we never see fromyear to year.
