PROJECT PLAYERS
PROJECT SCOPE
JamesHyatt Studio has been involved with the design o the landscape
and site work or The Peninsula Beverly Hills since its original construction
Aside rom creating memorable landscapes and outdoor rooms, completing
this ve-star luxury hotel was a technical challenge, as all outdoor areas
are on-structure. Even with this constraint, lush gardens surround the
bungalow-style villa suites with private patios and a roo garden terrace
dressed with cabanas and a swimming pool ofering magnicent views
Recently, JamesHyatt Studio completed the renovation o the hotel’s
pool deck, upgrading the original concrete pavement with an elegant
mosaic-tiled surace. As the Peninsula looks to make major landscape
renovations to keep up with competition in the area, JamesHyatt Studio
is assisting with a redesign o Luxury Suite 335, the arrival courtyard and
ountain and overall landscape improvements and maintenance guidelines

The pool deck at The Peninsula Beverly Hills is an intensive rootop garden. Green walls surround private cabanas ofering
extra shade or hotel guests.
Green roos and roo gardens soten the harshness and isolation o cities and suburbs and play an
important role in the development o LEED®-certied buildings. There are three types o rootop gardens
A GREEN ROOF OFFERS MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY VIEW
According to a report published by the American Society o Landscape Architects, the initial cost o greening
your roo is higher than conventional roong systems, but a green roo can pay or itsel over time. Green
roos extend the liespan o the roo membrane signicantly by protecting it rom sunlight and temperature
variations. On-structure gardens capture and utilize stormwater as their primary source o irrigation while
plants clean and lter the excess runof. Green roos and roo gardens cool the planet and protect against the
urban heat island efect, reducing roo temperatures by as much as 80 degrees Fahrenheit in warmer climates
GREEN ROOF SPECTRUM
• Intensive: an accessible, park-like roo garden with conventional trees and plants requiring irrigation and maintenance.
• Extensive: a traditional rootop blanket o sedum or sod requiring little maintenance.
• Semi-Intensive: a combination o both.
GREEN YOUR ROOF WITH OPTIONS
BEFORE DECIDING ON A GREEN ROOF / ROOFTOP GARDEN, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS
• What kind o roong system is currently in place and how old is it?
• What is the load-bearing rating o the roo?
• Is the roo area to be used or service unctions such as window washing, etc.?
Your answers to these questions will determine the most cost-efective approach to selecting and installing
a green roo system or rootop garden. ValleyCrest Design Group, our network o Landscape Architecture
studios, can assist in guiding the selection process and preparation o plans to drive the installation
process. ValleyCrest Landscape Development is a member o the U. S. Green Building Council and employs
LEED® Accredited Proessionals under both the Existing Building and New Construction categories
