Overview : Surface Area and Surface Integrals
You know how to integrate a function over a flat region in a plane(double integral).
If the function is defined over a curved surface, we now discusshow to calculate its integral.

The trick to evaluating one of these so-called surface integrals is torewrite it as a double integral over a region in a coordinate planebeneath the surface.

The figure shows a surface S lying above its “shadow” region R ina plane beneath it. The surface is defined by the equationf (x , y , x) = c .

If the surface is smooth (∇f is continuous and never vanishes onS), we can define and calculate its area as a double integral over R.
The first step in defining the area of S is to partition the region Rinto small rectangles ∆Ak of the kind we would use if we weredefining an integral over R.

Directly above each ∆Ak lies a patch of surface ∆σk that we mayapproximate with a portion ∆Pk of the tangent plane.
To be specific, we suppose that ∆Pk is a portion of the plane thatis tangent to the surface at the point Tk(xk , yk , zk) directly abovethe back corner Ck of ∆Ak .
If the tangent plane is parallel to R, then ∆Pk will be congruent to∆Ak . Otherwise, it will be a parallelogram whose area is somewhatlarger than the area of ∆Ak .

The other vectors in the picture uk × vk and ∇f are normal to thetangent plane.
We now need the fact from advanced vector geometry that|(uk × vk .p)| is the area of the projection of the parallelogramdetermined by uk and vk onto any plane whose normal is p.
In our case, this translates into the statement

Thus, the area is the double integral over R of the magnitute of∇f divided by the magnitude of the scalar component of ∇fnormal to R.
We reached the above equation under the assumption that∇f .p 6= 0 throughout R and ∇f is continuous.
Whenever the integral exists, however, we define its value to be thearea of the portion of the surface f (x , y , z) = c that lies over R.

Surface Integrals
We now show how to integrate a function over a surface, using theideas just developed for calculating surface area.
Suppose, for example, that we have an electrical charge distributedover a surface f (x , y , x) = c like the one shown in figure and thatthe function g(x , y , z) gives the charge per unit area (chargedensity) at each point on S .

Then we may calculate the total charge on S as an integral in thefollowing way.
We partition the shadown region R on the ground plane beneaththe surface into small rectangles of the kind we would use if wewere defining the surface area of S . Then directly above each ∆Ak
lies a patch a surface ∆σk that we approximate with aparallelogram-shaped portion of tangent plane, ∆Pk .

Up to this point the construction proceeds as in the definition ofsurface area, but we take one additional setp. We evaluate g at(xk , yk , zk) and then approximate the total charge on the surfacepatch ∆σk by the product g(xk , yk , zk)∆Pk .
The rationale is that when the partition of R is sufficiently fine, thevalue of g throughout ∆σk is nearly constant and ∆Pk is nearlythe same as ∆σk .

Surface Integrals
Surface integrals behave like other double integrals, the integral ofthe sum of two functions being the sum of their integrals and soon.

The idea is that if S is partitioned by smooth curves into a finitenumber of non-overlapping smooth patches (i.e., if S is piecewisesmooth), then the integral over S is the sum of the integrals overthe patches.

Thus, the integral of a function over the surface of a cube is thesum of the integrals over the faces of the cube.
We integrate over a turtle shell of welded plates by integrating oneplate at a time and adding the results.

Orientation
We call a smooth surface S orientable or two-sided if it possibleto define a field n of unit normal vectors on S that variescontinuouly with position.
Any patch or subportion of an orientable surface is orientable.Spheres and other smooth closed surfaces in space (smoothsurfaces that enclose solids) are orientable. By convention, wechoose n on a closed surface to point outward.

Once n has been chosen, we say that we have oriented thesurface, and we call the surface together with its normal field anoriented surface. The vector n at any point is called the positivedirection at that point.

Orientation
The Mobius band
is not orientable. Now mater where you start to construct acontinuous unit normal field (shown as the shaft of a thumbtack inthe figure), moving the vector continously around the surface inthe manner shown will return it to the starting point with adirection opposite to the one it had when it started out.
The vector at that point cannot point both ways and yet it must ifthe field is to be continuous. We conclude that no such field exits.

The Surface Integral for Flux
Suppose that F is a continuous vector field defined over an orientedsurface S and that n is the chosen unit normal field on the surface.
