Constructed more than 500 years ago, the terraced fields inthe highlands of Bolivia were a sophisticated system forconserving soil and water, and some remain in use today. Inthe 1980s archaeologists reconstructing ancient agriculturalsystems on the shore of Lake Titicaca (at 12,500 feet thehighest navigable body of water in the world) found thatthese ancient systems worked better in this difficultenvironment than many modern agricultural techniques.
