EQp1 LEED Review Response 07/20/12 Project Jacobs School of Music North Studio Building By Applied Engineering Services (AES) Question 1: Please provide a detailed narrative and calculations or resubmit the Submittal Template to include a detailed narrative and calculations describing the procedure employed by the project in the IAQ analysis (Ventilation Rate Procedure). Include in this detailed narrative specific information regarding the design outside air intake volumes for each air handling unit. Additionally, provide Ventilation Rate Procedure calculations for each air handling unit. For systems with multiple ventilation zones, the calculations should be sufficient to show that the critical zone was correctly determined, and that the peak occupancies predicted are aligned with those reported in other credits, and should include corrections for zone air distribution effectiveness (Ez) according to ASHRAE 62.1 Section 6.2.2.2, and ventilation efficiency (Ev) according to Section 6.2.5 Keep in mind that Ev can be determined according to Table 6-3 using the maximum zone primary outdoor air fraction (Zp) among all the zones served by the system, or according to Appendix A. Also note that the calculations must be conducted for the wort-case conditions (generally heating mode), and the Ez is most commonly 0.8 during heating mode. If the value for Ez is great than 0.8 for this project, please include a short description in the narrative supporting the use of the Ez value used. AES Response 1: The ventilation airflows were determined in Carrier’s design program, HAP 4.50. A copy of these calculations for each of the four AHUs serving the building are included in the attached file, “EQp1 - Attached Ventilation Calculations”. The design ventilation rates are summarized in the following table.

HAP follows ASHRAE 62.1 procedures to determine the ventilation rate for each AHU. All ventilation is introduced via the dedicated outside air system (DOAS). This unit preconditions the outside air before supplying the four distribution air handlers. The DOAS unit is a variable volume unit which varies from 5,700 cfm to 10,450 cfm. The DOAS responds to CO2 monitors in variable occupancy spaces and common return ducts throughout the building. On a call for increased ventilation by a CO2 monitor, the percentage of outside air is increased by 5% to the associated air handler. After 20 minutes, the monitor is polled again and the air volume is increased again if required. After the air handler is at it’s maximum ventilation rate, a further call from the CO2 monitor signals an alarm at the campus monitoring station. In spaces without variable occupancy, offices, studios, practice rooms etc, the minimum VAV box air flows are designed to provide required ventilation at minimum (normal) air handler ventilation percentage.
A diversity factor of 75% was applied during the ventilation calculation to account for people moving from room to room in the building but not necessarily occupying every space in the building. The CO2 monitors coupled with demand ventilation in the building allow us to take advantage of this diversity. The FTE occupancy number was divided by the number of people in the ventilation summary to determine the diversity fraction.
