Verbal Expressions

Algebraic Expressions

- made up of words and phrases

- a number, variable, or combination of the two connected by a mathematical operation

The sum of a number and

four

x + 4

WHAT’S THIS?

VARIABLE

• is a letter that represents a number.• Don't let the fact that it is a letter throw

you. Since it represents a number, you treat it just like you do a number when you do various mathematical operations involving variables.

• x is a very common variable that is used in algebra, but you can use any letter (a, b, c, d, ....) to be a variable.

f)  A number repeated as a term three times.

g)   The sum of three consecutive whole numbers.  [Hint:  Let x be the

first number.] h)  Eight less than twice a

certain number.  i)  One more than three

times a certain number.

f)    x + x + x

ALGEBRAIC EQUATION“IS” = EQUAL

 Write each statement algebraically.

a)  The sum of two numbers is twenty.

b)  The difference of two numbers is twenty.

c)  The product of two numbers is twenty.

d)  Twice the product of two numbers is twenty.

e)  The quotient of two numbers is equal to the sum of those numbers.
