CONCERT SEASON 2013

leadership the Choir has given several Australian premiere performances of choral works and, as part of its commitment to Australian music and composers, many outstanding new works have been commissioned.

In November, 2012, the Choir repeated its 2007 and 2010 events, “Sydney Sings Messiah”, leading a choir including almost 500 guest singers in a performance of Handel’s Messiah in the Sydney Town Hall.

Within the Choir there is also a smaller Chamber Choir of around 30 singers, auditioned annually. The Chamber Choir sings a varied repertoire in separate concert performances and also provides the more intimate and transparent sound sometimes required in sections of the major choral works being performed by the main Choir.

The Chamber Choir is available for private functions.

THE SYDNEY UNIVERSITYGRADUATE CHOIR was established in 1952 as the graduate group of the Sydney University Music Society (founded in 1878) and today has over 100 singers.

The Choir is committed to high quality performance of great choral music and its extensive versatile and innovative repertoire ranges from the grand works of the established masters to the music of contemporary composers. The Choir’s Patron is Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO.

WELCOME to a truly extraordinary concert season! We are opening our 2013 series with the largest concert we have ever staged. The choir will contribute to the celebrations of the bicentenary of the birth of Giuseppe VERDI with his famous Requiem, performed with a large choir including guest singers, at the Sydney Town Hall.

BACH’s St John’s Passion, a deeply moving work about Jesus’ trial and crucifi xion, deemed as one of the greatest musical masterpieces ever written, will be performed in our second concert.

The 2013 series will conclude with VIVALDI’s much-loved Gloria and the extraordinary Missa Dei Patris by ZELENKA, a contemporary of JS Bach and composer at the Saxon court in Dresden. The exceptional mass showcases his craftsmanship, comparable to that of the great JS Bach but in his very own distinctive style.

the Sydney Conservatorium’s Vocal Studies and Opera Unit, Professor Michael Halliwell or Chair of the Unit Maree Ryan) have singled out other contestants for encouragement, and these young singers have also sung solo engagements with the choir.

The Award has already substantially justifi ed the Choir’s hopes in sponsoring it by giving an impetus to the careers of a number of talented young singers, who have contributed to the success of the choir’s concerts and benefi tted from the experience offered to them. We are indebted to Joan Carden for her continued enthusiastic involvement and to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music for its work in organising the auditions.

THE JOAN CARDEN AWARDsponsored by Sydney University Graduate Choir, is now in its ninth year. The Award was established in 2004 to:

• identify and encourage young singing talent • strengthen the Choir’s relationship with the University of Sydney and the Sydney music community and • honour the contribution of Joan Carden

Short-listed applicants, who must be students of the University, are auditioned. The Award carries with it a cash prize $3,000 and a solo engagement with the choir at one of its 3 annual concerts. In addition, the judges (Joan Carden AO OBE, the Choir’s Music Director Christopher Bowen OAM, and senior staff of
