THE SOCIETY OF JESUS emerged in the midst of a turbulent era marked by many changes,

great discoveries, the expansion of the known world and violent religious

conflicts. The century was undergoing intense ideological, economic and

social transformations, and people needed to know how to respond to them.

Any effort to find one's identity in such aclimate and to embrace the new

world order required enormous amounts of energy and talento So, the Jesuit

missionary ventures in newly explored lands not only bear witness to the

perseverance and vigor of a group of individuals who traversed vast

territories on foot and on horseback and endured all kinds of hardships in

order to carry out the huge task before them Cthough not always that

successfully); they tell us of men of faith who were also great thinkers, artists

and scientists and who, with open minds and great intelligence , were able to

understand the distinct cultural forms they carne across during their travels

and act within them to achieve more humane lifestyles in a world that

presented immense variety and plurality.

In this new and complex era of changes brought about by the massive development of

technologies and growing economic interdependence, the story of the

exciting adventure that was life in the missions set up by a younger Society of

Jesus has a special significance for the Universidad Iberoamericana. It serves

to emphasize the twofold nature of our work, which is at one and the same

time academic and missionary in the sense that through high standard s of

research and education, we try to achieve a freer, more productive, just and

unified society, in the political, social and economic spheres.

J esuit missions and universities have always worked together in a fertile reciprocity that,

worldwide, has been one ofthe most effective modes of objectively studying

problems affecting different eras in order to formulate possible solutions,

bearing in mind their long-range and far-reaching consequences. For that

reason, it is especially significant that sixty years after its foundation, and

amid the great changes affectingtoday's world, the Universidad

Iberoamericana, in conjunction withArtes de México, is presentingthis

valuable and insightfullook at J esuit missionary labor, thus continuing the

series begun with last year's issue published on Jesuit colleges.
