This will be my last message as Exalt-ed Ruler. Dennis Ryan will take over on April 2. We have a new slate of officers being installed and I hope you will sup-port them in the coming year

It has been a difficult year as we strug-gled with the sprinkler issue. We are almost at our goal. Please consider a donation or possibly signing a Promis-sory Note. They are available behind the bar for either $500 or $1000 notes. Work is scheduled to start on April 1st and we have signed contracts in place. We need to have the funds ready to pay for these contracts.

I want to thank everyone for all their support this year. All the officers and the Board of Directors have worked very hard to make this a successful year. Flo has made sure I’ve been on top of things at all times. I want to welcome Faith Sapper back as your Treasurer. Her financial expertise is vital to this lodge. I also want to thank all the volunteers. Les and his cooks

and decorators have made each event success-ful. Hopefully everyone has enjoyed them-selves.

A special thanks to Donnie Sum-ner, George Abel and Fred Keisel for all their work around the Lodge. This Lodge cannot be run without volunteers and I thank each and everyone of you.

If I have forgotten anyone, please for-give me. I really do appreciate every-one of you, the Irish Committee, bar-tenders, bingo people, editors and all the rest of the volunteers without whom this lodge could not exist. Thank you.

Please support our incoming officers and Board of Directors so we can con-tinue our good work in the community and for the continued success of the lodge.

The Secretary’s Corner

Don’t give up on us now!We are getting closer to our goal for the fire sprinkler system we are required to install by the Spring of 2016. But, we aren’t there yet! As of this publishing, we have collected $42,000 so far.

You can contribute anytime by clicking on the links below or visiting our Fundraising Page at: http://veroelks.com/fundraisers/ or stop by the lodge and hand it to one of our officers or bartenders.

WE AREALMOST THERE!

It’s been a hectic time. Our by-law change for the rate increase has been approved by Grand Lodge. The 2016/17 invoices went out on February 17th. The dues payments are rolling in at a steady pace. Cards are being mailed out daily. Please remember that your 2016/2017 green membership card will go into effect on April 1, 2016. Please keep your red membership cards until then.

You truly do make a difference just by renewing your Membership. It allows us to continue our good works.

Membership Matters: Be a proposer! Someone brought YOU in to “Elkdom”... Invite others to join you. Together we can

GROW our Membership and be here for decades to come for our communities, our youth, and our Veterans!

As you may know, I will be your Secretary for 2016/2017. Thank you for your vote of confidence.

I would like to congratulate Dennis Ryan, PER - Exalted Ruler-Elect and all the new Officers on their election and/or appointment to office. We are all hopeful that this coming year will be one of our best.

Hope to see you at the Lodge soon. Call or email if you need me.

Elk of the Month for March is Mary Lou Bottomley

Mary Lou and her team did a wonderful job of decorating for the Harry Anna Ball. The ballroom was beautiful. After the ball she and her volunteers cleaned out and sorted all the linens according to color and arranged the closet. She also volunteers at Bingo every week as a food server.

Elk of the Month

We all enjoy coming to the Lodge, socializing, dining and having a good time with friends and members. After all, supporting these events is an important part of our existance. Knowing how to prepare allows our operation and it’s volunteer workers to create success of each event, which need to be profitable for the Lodge. Reservations are great. But, more important than that, is the fact that you are present and paying for the event.

Recently, more directly on Super Bowl, our reservations indicated 140 for which food was prepared. It is always a plan to prepare on time and for 5-10% more due to last minute attendees. Only 90 people came to enjoy food and festivities. Needless to say, over preparation ended up being excessive and expected profits deminished. In an attempt to provide a fun, inexpensive event, our margins were held low and the event ended up a loss due to members choosing to

not honor their reservations. If plans changed, a phone call would have been appreciated.

Reservation ComplianceThis is just one example of a reoccurring situation. The Board has discussed prepayment for all events, however, has backed away from that directive. In my opinion, I believe it should be revisited and instituted. Food and beverage margins are a mainstream of the Lodge operations. When such actions ocurr it costs the Lodge and effects the ‘bottom line’. We are not a full service restaurant and do not have the ability to market leftovers. Our product becomes lost. This occurrs more often than not.

The simple solution is to stand by your reservation, pay at time reservations are made and show up for the event. What would you do if you planned a dinner and your guests did not show?

‘Nuff said.

HappySt. Patty's Day

The activities at the Lodge have been many and var-ied. We’ve had two successful Irish events that were basically sold out. The Steak Dinners are drawing a large crowd and our musical entertainment has been great. The Harry Anna Ball was a great success and thanks to Mary Lou and her crew the decorations were spectacularMembers in the lodge volunteered to clean up the attic and all the closets to prepare for the installation of the sprinklers. They did an excellent job and our storage problem has been solvedwithout the need of an addition.Les Owen is in the process of organizing another great Country Western Night. This was a huge suc-cess last year and hopefully will be again this time. Be sure and pick up your tickets for the upcoming Irish Events and join in the parade and St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations.

The end of year report for the “Elks Love Kids of Character” program funded by the Impact Grant from Elks National has been submitted. Some greats figures were reported, every month 30,000 wampum were collect at the Elks Store through the months of October, November, and December - up from 7,000 per month last January when the program started. We are extremely pleased with the results.

Due to it’s popularity at the school, the school store is now open 4 times a month: 2 - Mondays & - 2 Fridays from 11am-1:30pm. Please call Michele Klager at 772-321-6704 if you’d like to help, it is truly rewarding.

Margaret Hearndon, an Elk member and school employee, has done

a great job of informing us of the underprivileged children’s needs. She was able to get 100 pairs of sneakers donated through Shoe Carnival. Therefore, we were able to reallocate those funds to provide 100 new VBE Little Indian sweatshirts with the Elks logo on them to the neediest children... just in time for the cold weather!

With football and Super Bowl a memory, Lodge weekends and TV will focus on Golf and NASCAR. Yea!! Both can be viewed on Saturday and Sundays. Saturday drink specials continue, along with varied entertainment to be enjoyed. Cold beer prevails on Sunday - special pricing as well.

March brings St Patty’s Day and numerous events prior. Hoist a pint or

toast the Irish with some Jamesons, Irish Mist, Tellamore Dew or Feckin’. Get in the Spirit!!

Thoughts go out to Jane Abs, who took a spill, creating a hip injury. Brenda Carroll is on the mend as well. We miss you both! Bartender Steve Ogonowski has made progress with his back injury and has returned to duty.

Soon it will be time for ‘Horsing

Around’ as the spring horse races will be run. Speaking of horses, the Gulfstream trip was great fun and enjoyed by many. Thanks to Bill Schubert for coordinating the event.

Remember to sign up for the annual golf tournament - you may even win a free bar tab.

Does Anyone Listen?Reprinted from “Elks History Project” http://www.elks.org/history/NewsStory.cfm?StoryID=71666

People who don’t listen have been with us for thousands of years. You may recall that Phaeton wouldn’t listen to Apollo and wound up dead. And remember Bellaphron, who rode Pegasus and wouldn’t listen to Zeus and tried to ride Pegasus up to Olym-pus. Bellaphron lost his horse and his honor, and eventually died. Then there were Otus and Ephialtes, two brothers who were giants who wouldn’t listen as they were warned not to mess around with Artemis, the goddess. They wound up dead, too.

Finally, we have Icarus who wouldn’t listen to his daddy, Daedelus, and flew too close to the sun and died. These Greeks, did they ever listen? Well, thank goodness we’re Elks, not ancient Greeks. We know how to listen. Your Lecturing Knight says, “Ever practice Brotherly Love.” Notice he says ever, not sometimes, or just when you feel like it. Your Loyal Knight says, “Be just to your fellow man.” That means be fair, be honest, be understand-ing. Your

Leading Knight says, “Be charitable to all mankind.” Your Exalted Ruler says, “Strive diligently that the name of Elk as borne by you may be worthy of an American citizen -- one who loves his fellow man.”

Do you listen when they say those things? More importantly, do you live these ideals? As Elks we are not asked to be like everyone else -- we are com-mitted to a life of higher calling. Our solemn oath requires that calling. Char-ity, Justice, Brotherly Love, Fidelity -- and a sense of belonging to something more important than ourselves; that’s what we are called to do. If you’re part of that, I guess you listen really well. But if you aren’t part of that, you just aren’t listening hard enough.

Listen: Anyone can be Phaeton or Bel-laphron or Icarus or Otus, but there is only one you.

You need to listen. We need you to listen.
