2017 is almost officially in the books, and I just want to say how much I have enjoyed the journey with all of you this year! From working on this publication, I know that Verona itself enjoyed a banner year as well.

2017 was the year that our neighbors came out in droves to support charity events such as Verona Fights Hunger, the Newman Cares Block Party, and the Backpacks for Life drive.

2017 was the year that our neighbors walked miles for organizations such as the Liver Life Walk, the Team Zoey Turkey Trot, the Building Tomorrows 5K for the ARC of Essex County and the Out of the Darkness Walk to Fight Suicide.

2017 was the year our library began its long renovation and moved into a much smaller space at the Verona Community Center—but still found ways to serve the community and hold programs that appealed to all ages.

2017 was the year that our Verona students contributed to our amazing school system, learned about understanding others during Autism aware-ness month, won numerous championships and titles and even started a new swim team.

And 2017 was the year that we got to know so many Verona residents and families, who are pursuing their passions, creating their homes, raising their children, and helping their neighbors in this town we love.

As 2018 arrives, we here at Verona Neighbors send our best wishes. We know that you will make this year even better than the last. Happy New Year!

The holidays at the end of December leading to the turn of the calendar are one of my favorite parts of the year. It’s often the perfect occasion to reflect on and appreciate all the good things the past year has given us and all the good things that are yet to come.

I cannot be more excited as we begin our second full year of Verona Neighbors magazine. What a pleasure it is to work on each issue! Thank you to our residents for sharing your stories and your ideas for the magazine. We appreciate your sincere and

positive feedback through all of your comments and letters. This is your magazine and we encourage you to keep participating in it. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any ideas or sugges-tions for future issues. We love receiving your feedback so we can continue to make Verona Neighbors a better version of itself as each month passes.

The thing I love the most about bringing this publication to life each month is the people I meet along the way. I have gotten to know many more wonderful people in this community over the past year and it’s very easy to realize why Verona is such a tight knit, proud community. That’s something that we want to bring out in these pages each month. Over the next year, I look forward to meeting more of our neighbors, learning about your stories and why you love Verona.

I would like to reflect here on all of the new partnerships I have formed and existing partnerships we have developed in the business community. I am grateful for their support in truly making it possible for our residents to receive this publication for free each month. These are some of the finest businesses in the area. Please consider them for the services they provide and acknowledge them for sponsoring our magazine.

Thank you to Jillian Nardiello-Zarr, our outstanding writer and content coordinator for capturing what our Verona neigh-bors have to say each month in such a compelling way. Thank you, Marti Golon, for reaching out to me last winter and sharing your vision. Your hard work and dedication to this publication comes out each and every issue with your ultra professional designs and layouts.

A fresh New Year is once again upon us. It’s the time to be thankful for the wonderful moments and blessings of the past year and to recognize all of our achievements. At the same time, 2018 is a brand new year to begin again, to start strong, and to get another chance to do everything we want to do this year. I want to personally wish our Verona Neighbors a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

From my family to yours – Cheers!

Happy New Year Verona Neighbors!

F or Sue Waldman, “pink is not just a color, it’s an attitude!” After renting in Verona since 1994, she purchased her first home in 2014 and chose to deco-

rate her front steps and interior walls in various shades of pink. “The color pink is associated with love, joy, gentleness and compassion, values that I embrace everyday,” Sue said. “Also, after renting for over 25 years, I was ready to express myself. I wanted to make a statement of empow-erment, divine feminine energy, freedom and playfulness.”

A self-proclaimed “master gardener,” Sue grows pink rose bushes in her front yard to both complement her “rosy” home and to honor her grandmother. “Rose is my paternal grandmothers name. After my father passed on, I added the name Rose to my name. My nickname is Rose Suzanne,” she said.

The pink rose does more than just honor her relative. It is also a symbol for Sue’s 24-year private practice business as a psychothera-pist and life coach. The “ROSE” in her business stands for “Realizing Our Spiritual Essence.”

Sue began her business after graduating from the University of California Santa Cruz with a BA in psychology and receiving an MA in Counseling at New York University and an MA in Educational Leadership and Supervision at Montclair State University. She also graduated from the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching.

“My goal is to help my clients reach their highest potential. My motto is that ‘Anything is possible!’” Sue said.

In order to reach and help the most people, Sue focuses much of her energy on education and community outreach. She is cur-rently a graduate adjunct professor at Montclair State University,

teaching graduate group counseling and graduate counseling skills and techniques. She also founded the Wellness Networking Group, a community of healing industry professionals. “I wanted to unite professionals in the healing arts to promote a spirit of cooperation and community rather than competition,” she said. Sue does all of this while also being a Master teacher in Karuna® Reiki Relaxation.

For the past 15 years, Sue has been incorporating “Mindfulness Meditation” into her psychotherapy and coaching practice to help people relax and let go of stress. Sue is currently working to establish a meditation program for children. “I want children to be “children”...they should not have to worry so much and be filled with anxiety, depression and stress,” she states. “I believe if chil-dren are taught at an early age to master their mind, the future will promise a life filled with ease, joy and peace. The stuff that truly matters.”

Certainly Sue finds relaxation and happiness for herself in her home near the Montclair Golf Club. “I love so much about my neighborhood. I love that when I’m gardening, my neighbors walk by with their dogs. I love living across from a elementary school and hearing children playing all day. I love living so close to Verona Park…my second home. And I love living houses away from Bloomfield Avenue…close to public transportation, boutiques and the 7/11.”

Of course, her neighbors are part of this love as well. “My next door neighbor and I started gardening together last spring,” Sue said, “and I am very good friends with a neighbor that I lived near on Claremont for 21 years…just by walking past his house every day to work. He has become like a brother!” Sue likes to use her gardening expertise to show her neighbors her appreciation. “I have been known in the past to drop off a pot of flowers or a sur-prise Christmas gift to some of my neighbors to remind them that they are special and important to me,” she said.

It is Sue’s hope that she can help more people understand these special people and other gifts that surround them every-day. “Imagine the world if every person was reminded every day that life is precious, that life is beautiful and filled with goodness and good people, that we should not take it for granted, that our dreams can come true and that love is always around each one of us,” she muses. “Always believe that something wonderful is about to happen!” Check out Sue’s website at www.suewaldman.com

A re you looking for a jogging buddy? These dogs love to

run! Moose is a 2-year-old German Shepherd and Ivy is a 10-month-old Retriever/Border Collie mix. These breeds historically do not kennel well for extended periods because they need exercise and stimulation. (Even the best kennel is still a kennel.)

Moose does well with female dogs and older children. Ivy will do well in a home with any dog and children. If neces-sary, either dog can be cat tested by the shelter. Both of these young-sters are fully vetted and microchipped.

If you’re thinking about giving Moose or Ivy a new home this New Year, please contact Montclair Township Animal Shelter at 973-744-8600 or email [email protected] for more info.

At press time, these animals were available for adoption. If they are no longer available, please consider other wonderful pets at PAWS-Montclair or Montclair Township Animal Shelter waiting for a loving home like yours.

Help stem the tidal wave of homeless animals flooding this country’s shelters by spaying or

neutering your pets. And if you’re going to add a furry friend to your family, PLEASE opt to adopt.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

E xercise is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Among its many benefits, exercise can strengthen your heart, bones,

muscles, and reduce stress. Being active and being healthy often go hand-in-hand. But, did you know, back pain is the most frequent cause of activity lim-itation in people younger than 45 years old?

Often times, we are our own worst enemy. That, “I think I did too much!” feeling? Well, it’s your muscles sending you a warning sign. Muscle strains are the most frequent inju-ries in sports. A muscle strain is a stretching or tearing of fibers within the muscle or tendon. Swelling can occur, which con-tributes to pain. Most often, the mechanism of injury is during a lengthening action (think: bending over to pick something off the floor) or during a sudden burst of speed.

Studies show that the better trained athlete has less muscle injury and damage versus the occasional athlete. Proper training can help you reach your goals, which is what makes elite athletes elite…and sets him/her apart from the weekend warrior.

In many instances, most sporting injuries can be prevented. Warming up is most often overlooked, but an integral part of prevention. Dynamic warm up is best. It is an active form of increasing the tissue temperature and pliability. Strengthening the muscles around the joints usually protects the joint, which pre-vents significant injury, as does proper technique of the activity.

SPRING:● Perform a Spring Clean-Up to clean all turf areas and beds of sticks, leaves, and other debris.● Dethatch your lawn to remove the layer of dead grass, roots, and debris that accu-mulates between the soil surface and green grass blades.● Begin regular weekly lawn cuts with

mower blades set at 3 inches.● Establish a watering schedule or turn on your irrigation system.● Apply Crabgrass Pre-Emergent and fertilizer● Prune as necessary around your property● Install mulch at base of plants and trees.● This is a good time to sod, seed, or install new plants to your landscape.

SUMMER:● Increase height of mowing blades to 3.5 inches or higher.● Water your lawn consistently and in the morning before the sun hits it.● Sharpen your mowing blades around mid-season to clean lawn cuts.● Prune Spring growth.

●Apply fertilizer.

FALL:● Perform Fall Clean-Ups to remove leaves and debris from lawn surfaces.● Continue watering as grasses in New Jersey thrive during the cooler tempera-ture months.● Aerate your lawn to decreases lawn compaction and allow air and nutrients to get to the lawn root system (requires special machinery).● Install mulch around base of plants and trees as needed.● Early Fall is a good time to seed, sod, or add to your landscape.

We hope that 2018 is filled with health, happiness, and your best lawn yet!

AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD

R alph and Karah Iansito are a couple of the town’s librarians. Haven’t seen them around the

Verona Public Library? That’s because they are the librarians of their very own Little Free Library, right on their front lawn at 20 East Lincoln Street.

A Little Free Library is a book exchange in a neighborhood, left in a place that everyone can access. A steward keeps it clean and stocked and everyone is invited to take or leave a book. This appealed to the Iansitos right away.

“My wife and I are both educators,” Ralph said. “She is currently a librarian at Bloomfield High School where I also teach English. When we moved to Verona with our two boys, Raffaele and Alexander, we noticed that many of the surrounding towns had quite a few little libraries and we wanted that in Verona as well. It’s simply a natural extension of our profes-sion and parenthood.”

So, for Karah’s birthday, Ralph ordered a Little Free Library kit and the Iansito’s quest to instill a love of reading in all ages began. Anyone who walks or drives by can now leave or take a book.

“At least twice a week a book is taken or a new one is dropped off. We also try to restock at least once a week to keep it fresh and inviting,” said Ralph. “Our favorites that we have put in are A Man Called Ove and American Gods.”

The Little Library is also perfect for kids, who always seem to be moving onto a new reading level. “The best books we have found so far are actu-ally books for our children. Our street is filled with kids who drop off and borrow books all the time. Someone actually left the entire Harry Potter series, so we’re excited to read those to the boys and pass them along!”

The Iansito’s favorite part of the Little Free Library is that their

neighbors can now share ideas and have a greater sense of com-munity. So do your part to participate in your community: drop by the Iansito’s Little Free Library to leave your favorite title or dis-cover a new one!

ORGANIZATION SPOTLIGHT

V erona is one of only 208 Sustainable Jersey-Certified communities, an outstanding group of New Jersey

municipalities that are making important con-tributions toward achieving sustainability in the state and beyond.

“We have had a great year in 2017,” said Steve Neale, chair of Sustainable Verona. “The township hosted our third annual Green Fair to support our local economy and promote environmentally friendly products and prac-tices. In 2016 we founded a Green Business Recognition program to recognize local busi-nesses striving to operate more sustainably and that program contin-ued to grow this year. We also launched our Verona Solar Challenge to help homeowners make the move to solar energy. This year we have also part-nered with other local organizations including the Junior Woman’s Club of Verona for the 1st Annual Downtown Trick or Treat Event. We’re looking to build on our success in 2018, and to do that, we need more volunteers to bring their energy and ideas to the table.”

The Sustainable Verona Green Team partners with resi-dents, businesses, and township organizations to pursue goals that encompass the three equal, interrelated components of sustainability:

Prosperity: Support local economies and use community resourcesPlanet: Practice responsible environmental management and conservationPeople: Contribute to a strong civil society that provides opportunity for all

The Verona Green Team meets monthly, usually on the first Wednesday of the month, always in the evening. In addition to attending planning meetings, volunteers are expected to lead or contribute to working groups dedicated to specific short- and long-term projects that benefit the town and its residents.

In addition to assisting with the above initiatives, vol-unteers will have the opportunity get hands on with local trail cleanups, various town wide fairs, community health programs, recycling efforts, community outreach programs and more! All ideas are welcome!

“The Township and the community work closely together to create a greener community and uphold the goals and mission of the Sustainable Jersey program. If we can influence some kind of change even at the local level, we see that as a positive step forward in the fight against climate change,” said Mayor Kevin Ryan.

LIBRARY CORNER

Happy New Year everyone!2018 promises to be an exciting year for the Verona Public Library. We anticipate moving back into an exquisitely renovated building at 17 Gould Street later this fall, and a gala celebration to mark our grand opening is planned. We hope the entire community will join in the festivities.

What to expect in the updated Verona Public Library:● A 3,700 sq.ft. addition on the Gould Street side of the build-ing will add spaciousness for seating, services and the Library collection.● Most importantly, an elevator will be in place to conveniently navigate the three floors of the building.● The grand scale of the building will be enhanced with dark wood, natural light and a natural gas fireplace. ● Expanded public computer access with 10 computer stations on the main floor and Wi-Fi for laptop and mobile device usage throughout the building .● A “Maker Space” in the Young Adult area, dedicated to creative output including 3-D printing capabilities.● Comfortable seating areas on the first and second floors for leisure reading and study.

● Convenient workstations with chargers for those with laptops and tablets throughout the building.● Café Area/Technology Bar in the second floor atrium space.● Extra meeting room space will be available for small groups on the second floor.● A large, dedicated children’s activity room downstairs for story-times and crafts.● Completely renovated Jack Foley Meeting Room with com-fortable seating for 50 with a new kitchenette for serving refreshments.● Enhanced working areas and offices for staff.

The Library building was originally funded with a Carnegie grant in 1916. Its elegant Neo-Classical architecture will be greatly enhanced by architect Frank Messineo of Solutions Architecture (a Verona-based firm.) He was respectful and conscientious of maintaining the building’s historical integrity when creating his design. “Our vision,” explains Mr. Messineo, “was to breathe new life into this century-old structure that has proudly served the Community of Verona for generations. The challenge was to update and modernize the spaces to create a welcoming and engaging environment for patrons, all while maintaining the stately aesthetics of an Andrew Carnegie Library.”

As planned, the building will enable staff to offer 21st century library services in a functional, beautiful space. With enhanced technology, more programs and activities, we look forward to the next 100 years!

In the meantime, be sure to visit the Library in its temporary location in the Verona Community Center’s Annex building located at 880 Bloomfield Ave., Verona, NJ. and check our website for scheduled programming. (veronalibrary.org)
