IntroductionScopeandPurposeThisdocumentdescribesthesystemrequirements,installationandconfigurationstepsfortheUilaVirtualInformationController(vIC)andVirtualSmartTap(vST).ItisassumedthatthereaderhasalreadyinstalledHyper-VmanagerandisfamiliarwiththeconfigurationsandoperationsofHyper-V.ArchitectureOverviewThediagrambelowshowstheUilaManagementandAnalyticsSystemarchitecture(UMAS)anditsrelationshiptoVirtualInformationController(vIC)andUilaVirtualSmartTaps(vST).

VirtualArchitectureTheUilaManagementandAnalyticssystem(UMAS)isabigdatastoreandanalyticsenginethatisdesignedtomonitoruptothousandsofservers.TheUMAScanrecorddatainminuteresolutionswhilemaintainingrealtimeresponsiveness.Thebuilt-inredundancyoffershighavailability,removesdowntimeandreducesmaintenanceoverhead.


TheVirtualInformationController(vIC)integratestotheHyper-Vmanager.ThevICisdeployedasaguestVMwhereitcollectsnetwork,storageandcomputeperformancemetricsthataremaintainedbytheHyper-V.ThisisthencombinedwiththedatafromtheVirtualSmartTaps(vST)andtransmittedtotheUMAS.VirtualSmartTaps(vST)arealsodeployedinthehostasanefficientlydesignedsmallfoot-printguestVMwithembeddedDeepPacketInspection(DPI)technologytoidentifyuniqueapplicationsandtheirattributes.vST’smeasureapplicationresponsetimeandcollectnetworkperformancedata.ThevSTdoesnotexamineorstorethepackets,thuseliminatingtheriskofexposingsensitivedata.

GettingStartedSystemRequirements

• UMAScanbeinstalledasaVirtualMachinedirectlyonaserverthathasHyper-Vhostinstalled.ThetablebelowshowstheminimumspecificationsrequiredtoinstallUMAS.

DeployUilaManagementandAnalyticsSystemThissectiondescribesthestep-by-stepinstructiontoinstallandactivateUMAS.

1. AnemailwithinstructionstodownloadUMASwillbeprovidedbyaUilaSupportstaff.Therewillazipfilethatconsistsof2files–

o UMAS-Deployment.ps1:UilaHyper-VPowershellinstallationscript.

o umas-template.vhdx:UilaHyper-VUMASvirtualmachinetemplate.

2. OpencmdasadministratorandrunUMAS-Deployment.ps1scriptasfollows–

3. RenameUMAStothedesirednameonHyper-Vmanager–


4. Selectdeploymentscaleasmentioned–

5. SelectthestorageforUMAS.MakesurethestoragehasenoughspacetoaccommodatetheUMASdeploymentscale.

6. SelectthevSwitchforthemanagementportcommunication

7. SetupVLAN’sforUMASifrequired,otherwisepressNo.

8. OnceUMASVMiscreatedsuccessfully,Hyper-VwillopenUMASconsolewindowtoconfigurenetworkingproperties.


9. UMASappliancewilltakeapproximately10-20minstodeploy.


10. Oncethedeploymentiscomplete,UMASwillrequesttheusertoinputthedesiredusernameandpassword.Thesystemwillreboottoapplytheconfigurations

11. OpenbrowserandlogintoUilaportalusingtheIPassignedinstep8.Loginusingtheusernameandpasswordcreatedinstep10.

9. vICrebootstoapplythenewconfiguration.LoginusingthevICcredentialsprovidedinstep8.

NowproceedtoinstalltheVirtualSmartTap(vST)

DeployVirtualSmartTap(vST)Thissectiondescribesastep-by-stepinstructiontodeployvST.

1. LogintoUilaportal.TheportalcanbeaccessedbyenteringtheIPaddress/hostnameofUMASserveronthewebbrowser.

2. Ifanorangebuttonlightsup,thevICisabletocommunicatewiththeUMAS.ClickontheorangebuttontostartvSTdeployment.


3. Clickon“Settings”andthen“vSTconfiguration”todefinetheHyper-Vdatacenter

4. OncetheHyper-VandvSwitchonvSTconfigurationappear,continuetoinstallvST.

5. Oncecorrectlyinstalled,thevSTstatuswillshowupwithagreen‘Active’
