  • Vestibule TrainingMeaning of VestibuleA body cavity, chamber, or channel that leads to or is an entrance to another body cavityVestibule in training context is used to denote that the training program is like an entry or passageway, the employee must cross before getting to the job itself.Vestibule training is an old method of training that originated in the 1800s. The method attempt to duplicate on-the-job-situation in a company classroom.

  • Contd. It is often imported with the help of the equipment and machines, which are identical with those in use in the place of work. This technique enables the trainees to concentrate on learning new skills. It is efficient to train semi-skilled personnel, particularly when many employees have to be trained for the same kind of work at the same time.Theory can be related to practice here.Duration ranges from few days to a few weeks.Often used to train bank tellers, inspectors, machine operators, typists etc.

  • Need of Vestibule TrainingNew or advanced equipment or tools is introduced in to the organization to do a particular job by using them.Large number of employees are to be trained simultaneously for same job.Hands on experience. To impart practical knowledge. To reduce accidents or failure of operations.

  • AdvantagesTraining becomes more reality-based.It relieves the employee from the pressure of having to produce while learning.Directly applies to jobs.Increases the chances of retention.Prevents trainees from making costly mistakesor damaging equipment.Allows instructors to give morepersonalized attention to the learners.Since the training programme is given in a separate room, distractions are minimized. The correct method can be taught without interrupting production.

  • DisadvantagesTime Consuming.Expensive.Trainer has to be very skilled. There has to be elaborate setups for the same.Additional investment in equipment may cause extra financial burden. The training situation is artificial.

  • SimulationSimulation is the use of equipment that duplicates job conditions and tasks so trainees can learn skills before attempting them on the job. It differs from vestibule training in that simulation attempts to duplicate the exact conditions that occur on the job. This kind of training is used to train astronauts, airline pilots, and others who must learn difficult procedures off the job.Represents a real-life situation.Trainees decisions result in outcomes that mirror what would happen if on the job.Examples: Air force fighter pilots are getting trained on the jet fighters simulator.

  • Contd.Simulation is creating computer versions of real-life situations. It is about imitating or making judgment or opining how events might occur in a real situation.

  • Pros & ConsProsProvides realism.Allows active practice.Possibility of learning without damaging the equipment or human lifeProvides immediate feedback.Allows exposure to hazardous events. No job interference.Lowers trainee stress.ConsCannot cover all job aspects. Limited number of trainees. Can be very expensive (for example, aircraft simulators and virtual reality simulators).

  • Methods of Simulation

    Business GamesCase StudiesIn-basket techniqueRole Plays

  • Business GamesThese are based on the set of rules, procedures, plans, relationships and principles. In the Business Games, trainees are given some information that describes a particular situation and are then asked to make decisions that will best suit in the favour of the company. And then the system provides the feedback about the impact of their decisions.Again, on the basis of the feedback, they are asked to make the decisions again. This process continues until some meaningful results do not come out.

  • Case StudiesThe trainee is given with some written material, and the some complex situations of a real or imaginary organization. The trainee then makes certain judgement about the case by identifying and giving possible solutions to the problem.

  • In-Basket TechniquesAlso known as In-tray methodThe trainee is presented with a pack of papers and files in a tray containing administrative problems and is asked to take decisions on these within a stipulated time. The decisions taken by the trainees are compared with one another. The trainees are provided feedback on their performance.

  • Role PlayRole play is a simulation in which each participant is given a role to play.Information is given to trainees related to:description of the roleconcerns objectives responsibilities etc. Some real life situations are presented before them and they are asked to act out the way in which the circumstances might reach an appropriate conclusion through the play.

  • CaseA company named XYZ Pvt. Ltd., deals with manufacturing of computer hardware. The company recently got a new project for which they have bought new machineries. There are two types of machines required for manufacturing process. For this project they have classified their workers on the basis of their technical knowledge. The manufacturing process is designed in two stages.Stage 1: Raw material processing.Stage 2: Automation process.
