The 49th season of the Bay Area Chorus begins with MUSICAL MOMENTS~PEACE, a tribute to Veterans, in the Worship Center of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. The beauty and fabulous acoustics of Gloria Dei Worship Center provides an enjoyable singing experience for audience and choirs alike.
This inspiring concert will begin with the Bay Area Youth Singers singing the National Anthem and the audience members will participate in sing-alongs honoring each branch of the military forces throughout the concert. A selection of American Hymns, Spirituals and Patriotic songs and more will be presented by the Bay Area Chorus, Bay Area Youth Singers, and Combined Middle School Choirs from Shaw and Keller Middle Schools in Pasadena conducted by BAC Singers that direct the choirs in those schools: Melissa Medina and Dawn Malone.

Bay Area Youth Singers (BAYS) is an independent, non-profit choral music education organization offering singers in grades 2-12 an opportunity to develop their singing voices, music listening and reading skills, and the poise and self-discipline needed for outstanding performance. The 9 month school year choral rehearsal and performance program offers three levels: Apprentice, Concert, and High School Treble Choir. During the 2012-13 season six BAYS singers were selected for membership in the American Choral Directors National Honor Choir and two were selected for the Texas Choral Directors Association state junior high school honor choir. Ninth grade singer, Emma Bolton, was recently selected for the TMEA Region 19 Choir. The BAYS Concert Choir was awarded the “Outstanding Performance” award at the 2013 SpringFest Choral Festival.
Brenda Varvoutis renander is the Artistic Director of the Bay Area Youth Singers and directs the Concert Choir. Her musical training at the University of Houston and the International Acadamie in Nice, France provided Mrs. Varvoutis with skills as a pianist, flautist and choral director. Her teaching experience spans 27
years in public and private schools at the elementary, junior high, and secondary level. She currently serves as choral director for the award winning South Houston High School choirs, music director at Lakeside Lutheran Church, and is a frequent choral clinician and adjudicator for UIL competitions throughout Texas.
Mike Tuneberg is the BAYS Apprentice Choir Director, a position he has held since the BAYS program began nine years ago. He holds a bachelor of music education degree from Edinboro University in Pennsylvania and is a frequent bass/baritone soloist in area musical theater, opera, and oratorio performances. Mr. Tuneberg directs the children’s choir at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and has a voice studio serving middle and high school students in the Clear Lake area.
Jennifer Figge is the BAYS accompanist. She also serves as pianist for Bay Harbour United Methodist Church, the Note-Ables Seniors Choir sponsored by the Bay Area Houston Symphony League, many area middle and high school choirs.

dawn Malone, Choral Director, has been a music educator for the last seventeen years. She is the inaugural choir director at Keller Middle School, establishing the school’s choral department in Fall 2008. Like her students, Mrs. Malone was a choir student in Pasadena ISD. She twice earned membership in the Texas All-State Choir while a member of the South Houston High School Choir, under the direction of Sally Schott. She received her Bachelor of Music degree with honors from the University of Houston in 1995. Mrs. Malone has also studied to become a certified Kodály music education specialist at the Kodály Institute of Houston-
UH Moores School of Music. Mrs. Malone is a member of the Texas Music Educators’ Association, the Texas Choral Directors’ Association, the American Choral Directors’ Association, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, and the Kodály Educators of Texas. She is also an honored alumna of Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity. She has performed with the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Houston and the Houston Grand Opera Chorus. She is proud to be a member of the Bay Area Chorus and Bay Area Women’s Chorus. Mrs. Malone is married to a fellow teacher, Mr. Darryl Malone, and is a proud mom to 11-year old Matthew.

Melissa Medina, Choral Director, started her choral journey as a student in Pasadena ISD. Being a product of PISD’s Fine Arts program, she was a member of the Texas All-State Choir, part of the Houston Grand Opera’s High School Voice Studio, and a recipient of the Bay Area Chorus scholarship. She is a cum laude graduate from Louisiana State University, leaving with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. Since graduation, Ms. Medina has returned to PISD as a choir director, and is currently in her fourth year at
Shaw Middle School. She has been musically involved in the Houston community which includes her work with the Bay Area Chorus for three years, a Spanish cantor at St. Pius V in Pasadena and at the Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral in downtown Houston. Ms. Medina also enjoys singing with her recently-formed quartet, the PasaDivas, which include three other choir directors in her district – two of them are also members of the Bay Area Chorus.

Bay Area Chorus Artistic director Keith dixonKeith Dixon received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northwestern State University in Louisiana and taught public school choral music in Texas and Louisiana for 36 years. Professional service includes terms as the American Choral Directors Association
Repertoire and Standards Chair for Male Choirs and High School Choirs and serving as the organizer for ACDA honor choirs at regional and national conferences. Mr. Dixon was a contributing editor for the ACDA Monograph 11, Foundation of Artistry: An Annotated Bibliography of Recommended Literature for High School Choirs.
As he begins his 19th year as Artistic Director, Mr. Dixon holds the distinction of having the longest tenure in the 49-year history of the Bay Area Chorus. He has conducted the BAC in performances of major works by Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Durufle, Faure, Vivaldi, Schubert and Bach. The chorus has recently performed Conrad Susa’s Carols and Lullabies. Tours with the BAC have included Ireland, Scotland, England and the Yucatan Peninsula. Mr. Dixon prepared the chorus for their featured role as a demonstration group for guest conductor Weston Noble in the 2005 filming of Weston Noble: Perpetual Inspiration. This DVD, produced by Quaid/Schott Media Productions, is distributed nationally and internationally by the Hal Leonard Corporation.
An active clinician for workshops, festivals and honor choirs, Keith Dixon has served on the choral faculty of the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute of Quartz Mountain since 2006. Retiring from Klein High School in 2012, Keith leaves a rich legacy of high school choral excellence. Kingwood High School Choirs under his
direction have appeared in honor choir concerts at four Texas Music Educators Association state conventions and at four American Classic Madrigal Festivals and he has prepared them for performances with such notable conductors as Moses Hogan, Robert Sund, Maria Guinand and Craig Jessop.
Mr. Dixon has performed as a member of the Houston Symphony Chorus, the Concert Chorale of Houston and the acclaimed Robert Shaw Festival Singers, with whom he recorded the Telarc releases Amazing Grace, Evocation of the Spirit, and Appear and Inspire. His participation in these performing groups influenced his teaching methods and conducting techniques. This year finds Mr. Dixon teaching during the week at LSU in Baton Rouge, LA and coming to the greater Houston area to conduct the BAC concerts. Robert Phillips, Jr is rehearsing the Bay Area Chorus weekly and conducting the Veterans Day Concert on November 11 for the BAC 49th Concert Season.
Bay Area Chorus rehearsal director and Guest Conductor – robert Phillips, Jr.Robert Phillip is the first choir director at Clear Springs High School, serves as the Fine Arts Department Chair and teaches AP Music Theory. He is a product of Clear Creek ISD and is thrilled to be teaching just minutes away from his boyhood home. Rob holds degrees from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Prior to teaching at Clear Springs he taught at Clear Lake High School and J. Frank Dobie High School in Pasadena. He and his wife Rachel have two children, Lyra and Micah.

She is a member of the American Guild of Organists, and is on the Hospitality Board for the 2016 AGO National Convention (to be held in Houston), and is a member of the Reg Brown Houston Choristers Guild Endowment Committee.

Mendy taught piano at Annunciation Orthodox Church in Houston, and then taught elementary music (K-5) for seven years at Bay Area Charter Elementary School. She is the accompanist for the Bay Area Chorus, and also accompanied the Bay Area Youth Singers for seven years. Mendy accompanies numerous high school and intermediate choirs and orchestras. She was the invited guest organist on a KUHF radio broadcast of Bach Society of Houston Vespers at Christ the King Lutheran Church.
Mendy began her keyboard studies at age five and continued through her graduation from Jefferson High School in Georgia. She studied organ with Dr. Robert Jones and composition with Dr. David Ashley White at the Moore’s School of Music at the University of Houston, where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance. She has been married to John for 27 years, and is the mother of three girls - Claire, 18, Margie, 11 and Emma, 11.
One of Houston’s oldest non-profit choral groups, the Bay Area Chorus has brought heartfelt performances to Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast since 1965. Long before the population of the Houston metroplex expanded to the shores of Clear Lake, this thriving choral group had already built a following among local residents and in surrounding communities.
More than 60 singers bring unique interests, ethnicity and cultural experiences to the group and represent a variety of professions as diverse as Houston itself. In addition to performing choral masterworks, this all-volunteer chorus also programs traditional holiday music, historic and contemporary classical choral music, spirituals, folk songs from around the world and Broadway favorites. Continuing growth in enrollment resulted in the formation of the Bay Area Women’s Chorus in the fall of 2009. The Women’s Chorus performs at all season concerts and had the honor of presenting a concert at the 56th Annual Convention of the Texas Choral Directors Association Convention in San Antonio in July, 2011. Recent guest artists for BAC concerts have included Dr. John Lienhard, founder of KUHF’s The Engines of Our Ingenuity, legendary
composer/arranger Alice Parker, com-poser/song leader Nick Page and Houston gospel recording artist Barbara Johnson Tucker with pianist Phillip Hall. The Bay Area Chorus appears on the DVD Weston Noble: Perpetual Inspiration, distributed internationally by the Hal Leonard Corporation.
The BAC Women’s Chorus is on hold while our Artistic Director Keith Dixon is teaching in Louisana at LSU this year. The Bay Area Chorus is rehearsing with Robert Phillips Jr. and will have Keith Dixon returning to conduct most of the concerts. BAC is looking forward to celebrating their 50th Anniversary in the Spring of 2015.

MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Bay Area Chorus is to enrich the Houston and Galveston Bay area through the powerfully expressive eloquence of choral music.
GOALS• To provide educational outreach for audiences, chorus
members and the local student community through the presentation of varied styles of choral music, including both contemporary and classical.
• To provide the opportunity for singers in the community to participate in the preparation and performance of high quality choral music.
• To demonstrate the continuity between student and adult performance opportunities by inviting area youth to participate in concerts.

Carol BarwickSixteen years of singing with the Bay Area Chorus made Carol Barwick a staunch supporter of this outstanding community chorus. After retiring from 30 years as a public school choral music teacher, she began working to make the dream of establishing a Bay Area children’s chorus a reality. With the support of the Bay Area Chorus, the Bay Area Youth Singers began rehearsals and performances in the spring of 2008. Carol serves as the volunteer executive director of this music education organization. Carol is also the founder and director of the Summer Music Camp for elementary and middle school students, co-sponsored by the Bay Area Youth Singers, Bay Area Chorus, and University Baptist Church. She maintains an independent piano studio and is a frequent accompanist in the Clear Lake area. Her second career as owner/president of B & B Steel Products (a small manufacturing company) began in 2005. Carol hopes that her experiences as a musician and businesswoman help her serve effectively on the advisory board of the Bay Area Chorus.
Linda FletcherLinda Fletcher is the Director of Fine Arts for the Pasadena Independent School District. She has devoted 35 years to music education, teaching elementary music and intermediate and high school choral music. Linda received her Bachelor of Music Education with vocal emphasis from Sam Houston State University. She earned the Master of Science in Education Administration degree from the University of Houston/Clear Lake. Linda is an advocate for the arts in education and in all aspects of life.
Sam HarrisSam Harris is in his twenty-seventh year of public education as Director of Academic Enrichment and Fine Arts for the Galena Park Independent School District. Prior to assuming this position in 2000 he spent fifteen years as the choral director at North Shore High School. Sam received his Bachelor of Music
degree and his Master of Music degree from Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas State University), in San Marcos, Texas. Under his leadership the North Shore High School Choral program grew from thirtyfive students to more than five hundred and twenty-five students winning multiple Sweepstakes each year at UIL Concert and Sight-reading Contest as well as trophies at regional and nation music competitions. In 1994 the North Shore Chorale was named “Grand Champion of Texas” in the American Classic Music Festivals and performed as a state honor choir at the 1996 Texas Music Educator Association State Convention. Mr. Harris brought this same commitment to excellence to his tenure as Director of Fine Arts as he supervises a 120 member staff in music, art, theater and dance and a budget just shy of one million dollars for the Arts education of 22,000 students. Even though every school in GPISD is a Title I campus with a population that is 70 percent economically disadvantaged and 78 percent Hispanic, GPISD Fine Arts organizations consistently out perform their more affluent suburban peers at UIL competitions. “The Arts are for everyone, not just those with the economic means to achieve according to conventional wisdom.”
deborah KidwellDeborah Kidwell served public music education for 33 years. She holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Education degrees from the University of Houston. She taught all levels of orchestra in Goose Creek GCISD(Baytown) and Clear Creek ISD, and served as the Director of Visual and Performing Arts for Clear Creek prior to her retirement in 2007. Her orchestras won outstanding awards at UIL contest and in festivals in Dallas, Galveston, New Orleans, San Antonio and San Francisco.
The Texas Art Education Association awarded Deborah their Educator of the Year for Administration/ Supervision for 2007. Deborah is a past president of the Texas Orchestra Directors Association. She serves

as a UIL Orchestra judge throughout the state and has served as a Region Orchestra clinician and also a consultant for school districts. She is an active church musician as a violinist and handbell player and directs an adult recorder group at her home church. Deborah is married to James Kidwell, also a retired orchestra director, and they have three married children and seven grandchildren. Deborah believes that the Bay Area Chorus is a vital and important part of the Bay Area community and wishes to support and promote the chorus in any way she can.
James KidwellJames Kidwell, a former public school orchestra director retired in 2004 after a total of 35 years in public music education at Clear Lake High School and other schools in Clear Creek ISD, Lubbock ISD and Carollton-Farmers Branch ISD. James is a graduate of Louisiana Tech University (BA, Ed) and Texas Tech University (MME). In 2000, James was Space Center Rotary nominee from CLHS for the CCISD Secondary Teacher of the year. While at CLHS, his orchestras received many awards, including being named the TMEA High School Full Honor Orchestra in 1990-91. James was Associate Conductor for several years for the Clear Lake Symphony. Mr. Kidwell has been Orchestra Vice-President of Texas Music Educators Association, served as President of the Texas Orchestra Directors Association, and received that organization’s Orchestra Director of the Year Award in 2008. James is an active UIL and festival judge across the state and clinics orchestras throughout the Houston area.
Mr. Kidwell is active in the music program at Webster Presbyterian Church, playing in string ensembles, the recorder consort, and small hand bell ensemble. He has been the director of the adult hand bell choir for the last 21 years. James is married to Deborah Kidwell, and has three married children, Chris, Kristina, and Kathryn. They also have seven grandchildren.
dean MuthsDean Muths has been the Director of Visual and Performing Arts for the Clear Creek Independent SchoolDistrict for the past 5 years. He has lived in the Clear Lake area since 1964 and is a product of Clear Creek
ISD having graduated from Clear Lake High School in1975. He received his Bachelor’s in Music Education from Sam Houston State University, his Master’s in Music Education from University of Houston Central Campus and his Master’s degree in Mid-Management from University of Houston/Clear Lake. Mr. Muths began his teaching career as a band director at Clear Lake Intermediate in 1980. In 1991, he became assistantprincipal at Space Center Intermediate before returningto Clear Lake Intermediate as principal in 2002. In his present position since 2007, he oversees all choir, band, orchestra, theatre, art and dance programs for CCISD.
Gary Vincent navyGary Vincent Navy is a graduate of the College of the Mainland and earned a B.M. from Texas A&M in Commerce, formerly known as East Texas State University. He debuted with Houston Grand Opera in Jonathan Wade in 1991. He is a guest cantor/soloist in churches/synagogues throughout the Galveston-Houston area and has also appeared in theater productions throughout the greater Houston area. Mr. Navy is a former music educator with Galveston, Pasadena, and Dickinson Independent School Districts. He has performed with Opera in the Heights, Houston Ebony Opera Guild, Bay Area Chorus, Houston Masterworks Chorus and the Galveston Symphony. Gary currently performs with the HGO Chorus, the Galveston Heritage Chorale, Barbara Tucker’s A Chosen Few and is Coordinator of Liturgical Music at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Humble.
Sally SchottTexas Music Educator’s Association Past President and State Vocal Chair, Sally Schott also served as President ofthe American Choral Directors Association SouthwesternDivision. Since retiring in 2004 after 39 years of teachingsecondary choral music, she’s supervises UH and SHSUstudent teachers. She is an educational consultant for American Classic Music Festivals, the Houston ChamberChoir and several area school districts. She was a staff member for the Bay Area Chorus from 2004-2012. South Houston High School choirs under her directionperformed for conferences presented at the state, regionaland national level for TMEA, ACDA and the Music Educator’s National Conference.
A founding partner of Alliance Music Publications, Ms.Schott’s other publications include two state-adopted music textbooks, music sight reading books and DVD’sfeaturing conductors Paul Salamunovich, Weston Nobleand Sandra Snow. Awards include Pasadena ISD High School Teacher of the Year, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Alumni Hall of Fame, the South Houston High School Honored Former Faculty Member, the TCDA Choral Excellence Award and theBAC Distinctive Service to the Arts Award. She is a member of Who’s Who in America. Those who study, perform and enjoy choral music form a very special community!
Tim VaughnTim Vaughn, currently the Fine Arts Director in GooseCreek CISD, was a choral director in Texas public schools for 30 years. He spent the last 30 years of his teaching career at Ross S. Sterling High School where his choirs achieved 15 consecutive years of sweepstakes
ratings at UIL contests. Mr. Vaughn’s choirs were chosen to perform at the Texas Music Educators’ Association convention in 2005 and 2008 along with the Texas Association of School Administrators convention in 2006.
An active member of TMEA, Mr. Vaughn has served asregion choir organizer, region vocal chairman, auditionshost, all-state section leader, area vocal chairman, and UIL vocal contest chairman and stays busy as a UIL adjudicator and clinician for choirs preparing for concert and sight reading contests. He has also served as an All-Region clinician for several regions across the state. Mr. Vaughn’s other honors include Goose Creek CISD Teacher of the Year 2005, Deer Park Hall of Honor in 2006 and Class Nobel Educator form the University of North Texas in 1979 and completed his master’s degree in Music Education at the University of Houston in 1988.

Priscilla ennisPriscilla Ennis came to the Bay Area when her husband Bob came to work on the Space Shuttle. Ennis received her BA degree from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. Her career in real estate has spanned more than 35 years. In recent years she has consistently been the top producing agent with Re/Max Space Center. A church choir member for 33 years, Ennis has been involved with Clear Lake Pan Hellenic and the Clear Lake Symphony League. She loves music and is very happy supporting the BAC, in fact, Ennis has donated $1000 each year toward a BAC scholarship for a deserving high school senior planning to study music.
elizabeth dennard ed.d, LPCBeth Dennard, is the director and principal counselor of Bright Futures Consulting. She founded Bright Futures Consulting (BFC) in 1999 and her company offers personalized career counseling, expert college planning and coaching for life direction. Beth and her associates help people truly know themselves, make a plan and succeed. BFC offers individualized guidance during life transitions, specifically: high school to college, college to graduate school and school to the workplace. BFC emphasizes finding the right next step with a focus on funding strategies. At Bright Futures Consulting we believe that each person is uniquely gifted for a life of purpose, which inspired the Bay Area Chorus Music Education Scholarship. Dr. Dennard sponsored this scholarship for a high school student who plans to major in Music Education. Music makes life enjoyable and the world a better place and we have music educators to thank for teaching and inspiring students to pursue music.
dr. david r. GordonDr. Gordon has been practicing dentistry in the Clear Lake area since 1990. While Dr. Gordon performs a wide array of dental procedures, his focus is primarily on cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry. Dr. Gordon received dual bachelor degrees from Tulane University in New Orleans and, after conducting research in cell
biology at Baylor College of Medicine here in Houston, went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery from The University of Texas Health Science Center Dental Branch in San Antonio, where he conducted research on an assortment of biomaterials used in dentistry today. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Texas Dental Association and the Greater Houston Dental Society. He is also a member and past president of Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity.
Bette JohnsonA former Mayor Pro-Tem for the city of Nassau Bay, Bette Johnson served on Council for eight years. She also ran on the Nassau Bay ambulance for 25 years, serving as medical chief for seven of those years. She received her Master’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Houston Clear Lake before Bette starting teaching at McWhirter Professional Development Lab School in Webster. She was a Master Reading Teacher when she retired after 23 years in CCISD. St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Nassau Bay is where Bette spends most of her time volunteering since retiring.
Bette sang in her High School Choral Group. It is where she met her husband Don when they performed in the musical, Brigadoon, together. That is reason that Bay Area Chorus is so dear to her heart
ralph ParrRalph Parr is a lifelong resident of the Bay Area and he and his wife Claudia are long time patrons of the arts here. After 40+ years of service to the Clear Creek ISD, serving as a teacher, administrator and board member, Ralph retired from the District officially in 2009. Now he enjoys reading and traveling and visiting Ralph Parr Elementary School in League City where he reads to the children from his own easy chair in the Library. He was an organizing member and first president of the Clear Creek Country Theatre where he often directed and acted. A strong advocate of choral music, Ralph was a instrumental in the movement that made CCISD a leader in the state for dynamic and award winning

high school choirs. Claudia Parr and the Parr’s son, Richard, are leading residential realtors in the Clear Creek area. The Parrs enjoy frequent visits to New York City to attend plays and musicals. This year Ralph Parr was honored to be selected as one of the 50 most influential citizens of the entire area by the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce.
dan PattersonA retired computer professional, Dan Patterson now volunteers in the Literacy Lab at Falcon Pass Elementary and likes working there very much. He moved to Clear Lake from Philadelphia in 1999 and loves living in Houston. He has had a life-long interest in music, particular in opera and vocal music, and is an ardent supporter of the Arts. His life in recent years has centered around helping to raise his beloved great-greatnieces Taylor and Vicky, who are both very musical. Currently Dan is serving his second year on the BAC Board of Directors Representing the Advisory Board and in charge of Tickets.
Pat SwartleyPat Swartley is a long time supporter of the Clear Lake Symphony and the Bay Area Chorus. She has assisted the Clear Lake Symphony with PR and fund raising forover 25 years and now brings that experience to BAC as a member of the Advisory Board. A former band director, Pat has played and taught clarinet most of her adult life and is presently teaching clarinet for CCISD.
A. Jan TaylorA. Jan Taylor, a Houston native, received the Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Houston and the Master of Arts degree from Prairie View A&M University. She is currently pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting at the University of Houston. Her 1996 appointment as Director of Choral Activities at Prairie View A & M University followed a successful teaching career as piano instructor and choral director in the Houston Independent School District.
As a conductor, Mrs. Taylor has been associated with the Singing Boys of Houston Preparatory Choir and the Houston Ebony Opera Guild and is founding director
of Intermezzo, a professional vocal ensemble. She has served as adjudicator and choral clinician for numerous choral festivals, and as a church choir director and accompanist. Mrs. Taylor served as Assistant Conductor of the Houston Symphony Chorus from 2003 until 2006.
rick TegelerRichard G. Tegeler is the director of traditional worship at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church where he directs the adult choir, youth choirs and celebration orchestra. He has a master’s degree in vocal performance from the University of Houston and a bachelor’s degree in musiceducation from Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa. Mr. Tegeler has taught choral music for 20 years in Iowa and Texas. He has taught music at all levels; preschool through adults. He was the choir director for the award winning Des Moines Christian High School Choir from 1998 – 2004. He also taught music at Garfield Elementary School in the Pasadena Independent School District for 9 years. He and his wife Valerie owned and operated The Music and Movement Center, an early childhood music studio in Des Moines, Iowa. Rick has sung with The Des Moines Metro Opera as well as OPER A IOWA. Mr. Tegeler is a member of the Texas Choral Directors Association and Choristers Guild. Rick and his wife Valerie have four children.

The First World War finally ended after four long and bloody years of fighting, on November 11 1918. The guns stopped on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
Millions of people were killed in the war and millions more were injured. In the years since 1918, even more people have died in wars around the world including, of course, World War II.
November 11 was chosen back in 1919 as the special day each year when we would all think about and remember those who had died. To this day, almost 100 years later, at 11am on November 11 many people across Britain stay silent for two minutes to think about those who died. At first, November 11 was known as Armistice Day because armistice is the word used for an agreement between enemies to stop fighting. These days it is more usually called Remembrance Day or Poppy Day.
So, we know why November 11 is special, but why poppies? The story begins back in 1915, during World War I…
An American poet called Moina Michael read the beautiful poem. It gave her the idea of using poppies to remember the dead but also to help the living at the same time. Moina bought real poppies and gave them out to friends. She also sold some poppies and gave the money to surviving, needy ex-soldiers. The first official Poppy Day, organized by a charity called The Royal British Legion, was held in 1921. Poppies make a very good symbol for remembrance for several reasons. They were the only flower that grew easily on the battle fields after WWI. They’re very delicate flowers too that live for a short time, which is rather like the young men killed battle.
The color is important too – what does the bright red remind you of? Can you see why some people might think that fields of poppies look like fields of blood? The Royal British Legion use money raised on Poppy Day and at other events through the year to help thousands of ex-soldiers and their families. They also organize festivals, parades and church services of Remembrance.
So - now you know! Those bright red paper flowers are full of history and meaning. They’re very special to many, many people. John McCrae’s poem, written in 1915, was the inspiration for Poppy Day.
