VFR Patterns on airport
Left Traffic South Alpha
Call Tower: “Kona Tower, Helicopter _______, Requesting Left Traffic South Alpha”
Upwind - remain East of the KOA VOR
climb to 300’ MSL or higher
Crosswind - remain slightly North of Energy Road
keep climbing
Downwind - remain West of the Highway
maintain 600’ MSL
call: “Kona Tower, Helicopter ______, Downwind”
Base - fly parallel to the Airport Road
fly slightly south of Delta intersection
remain at or above 300’ AGL over the hangars/buildings
Final - if advised by tower, shoot approach south of Charlie intersection;
aircrafts taxing are the reason most of the time – don’t overfly them

High Pattern South Alpha

cross Energy Road and keep climbing
Crosswind - perform 180 turn at or above 600’ MSL (the truck in the lava field is a good
reference point to turn around)

look out for traffic in Left Pattern and/or South Practice Area
fly parallel to Uu Street
remain over or slightly West of Uu Street
Base - Perform 180 Autorotation
Final - if advised by tower, shoot the approach south of Charlie intersection

Right Traffic North Alpha

Upwind - start climb out over North Aplha
sidestep to the dirt-road slightly East and keep climbing to min 300’ MSL

fly parallel to the taxiway
remain West of the Radar Antenna
look out for traffic in North Practice Area
Base - fly parallel to the road that goes to the tower
remain South of the tower; unless otherwise advised (dashed line)
Final - onto North Alpha

No radio calls are required once in the South Practice area;
- this doesn’t mean you don’t have to listen to the radio anymore
- tower might give you advisories or requests
For higher Altitudes call Tower:
“Kona Tower, Helicopter _______, Requesting 2000’ South Practice Area”
When leaving the practice area report the amount of operation:
“Kona Tower, Helicopter ______, we had 10 operations in the South Practice Area”

Remain – North of the Rental Cars
West of the Highway
South of the Dirt road
East of Paoo Street (Extend it outward to the north)
Approved up to 800’ MSL
Look out for traffic in Right Pattern and North Practice Area
No radio calls are required once in the North Practice area;
- this doesn’t mean you don’t have to listen to the radio anymore
- tower might advise or request things
For higher Altitudes call Tower:

The green Arrow outlines transition areas
For a transition from the North of the airport to South of the airport (or reverse) stay:
o East of the Highway
o West of the Palisades
o Don’t overfly houses
o Altitude min 1500’ MSL
Other Rules and Practices:
Always look out for other traffic
Always give right of way to all other aircraft whenever possible

Departure to the North East – Runway 17 in use

Take off and proceed like in a standard left pattern for South Alpha
Cross to the East of the Highway at Airport Road
Remain East of the Highway and continue climbing to min 1500’ MSL
Departure to the North East – Runway 35 in use
Call Tower: “Kona Tower, Helicopter _______, Requesting Departure to the North East”
Take off and start climbing along Alpha Taxiway northbound
Once North of the tower you can proceed North East bound
Continue climbing to min 1500’ MSL
Tower may advise you to turn out before Delta (dashed line):
Perform Maximum Performance Takeoff
Turn Eastbound before taxiway Delta
Cross to the East of the Highway at Airport Road
Remain East of the Highway and continue climbing to min 1500’ MSL
Departure to the North East – Runway 17 in use
Departure to the North East – Runway 35 in use
Departure to the South East – Runway 17 in use

Take off southbound on taxiway Alpha
Cross Energy Road and start turning South East bound
Remain West of the Highway and continue toward Kailua Kona town
Keep climbing to min 1500’ MSL

Perform Maximum Performance Takeoff
Turn Eastbound before taxiway Delta
Turn Southbound West of the Highway
Once passed Energy road continue South East bound
Remain West of the Highway and continue climbing to min 1500’ MSL
Departure to the South East – Runway 17 in use
Departure to the South East – Runway 35 in use
VFR Arrivals
Arrival from the North East – Runway 17 in use
Fly inbound slightly West of the Highway 1500’ MSL
Look out for traffic in the North Practice Area

If the wind is calm depart straight to the North West if cleared by tower
Otherwise depart into the wind, climb to min 300’ MSL and turn North West bound; unless
otherwise advised by Tower

Departure to the South West – Runway 17 in use
Departure to the South – Runway 35 in use
Departure to the North West
IFR Arrivals
Arrival on Runway 17 – Runway 17 in use
1. Option:
o Fly straight in towards Runway 17
o Once abeam Delta expect to sidestep onto South Alpha for landing
2. Option:
o Tower may advice you to sidestep to Alpha taxiway prior to the numbers and fly the full
length of Alpha taxiway
3. Option:
o Tower may advice you to break off the approach prior to the numbers and enter a left
base for South Alpha
Arrival on Runway 17 – Runway 35 in use
Fly straight in towards Runway 17
Prior to the numbers, break off approach to the East and enter a right Base for South Alpha
Arrival on Runway 35 – Runway 17 in use
1. Option:
o Fly straight in towards Runway 35
o Expect to perform 180 turn onto South Alpha abeam Charlie or Kilo
2. Option:
o Tower may advice you to brake off the approach at Energy Road enter a left Pattern for
South Alpha
3. Option:
o If wind is calm you may ask for to sidestep and land northbound on South Alpha
Arrival on Runway 35 – Runway 35 in use
1. Option:
o Fly straight in towards Runway 35
o Expect to sidestep and land on South Alpha
2. Option:
o Tower may advise you to land on the runway
o Tower will issue further taxi clearance
Arrival on Runway 17 – Runway 17 in use
Arrival on Runway 17 – Runway 35 in use
