Fuel Economy Facts

Good vehicle aerodynamics is ESSENTIAL to achieving excellent fuel economy! It is also important to understand that the fuel savings achievedwith the addition of each aerodynamic device is not cumulative. The more aerodynamic features on the truck, the less each contributes as apercentage of the overall savings. Many other factors also affect a truck's fuel efficiency; including tire tread depth, engine rating, rear axle gearing, idle time, speed, weather conditions, driver habits and more.

Aerodynamic Bumper - Volvo's aerodynamic bumper is designed to provide optimal airflow under the vehicle. An optional extension can beadded to prevent airflow from hitting obstructions under the vehicle.

Partial and Extended Chassis Fairings - Partial chassis fairings can improve fuel economy between 2% and 3%. Full fairings offer someadditional improvement, but are often specified because of their aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Cab Side Deflectors and Extenders - Volvo cab side deflectors have a complex, flared contour, unlike the flat deflectors used by competitors. This unique shape minimized drag and optimizes performance, particularly in crosswind situations. Optional extenders can be added to furtherreduce turbulence between the cab and trailer. The use of both roof and side extensions can contribute up to a 2% fuel economy improvement.

Roof Fairing and Extensions - Volvo's roof fairing reduces drag between the cab and the trailer. If the customer still prefers a longer trailer gap, roof fairing extension (along with side extensions) allow a customer to fine tune the truck to the trailer they are pulling. Volvo's patented designprovides an approximate 1% to 1.5% increase in fuel economy.

Trailer Gap - Minimize the wheel base and trailer gap. The length of the trailer gap plays a significant role in aerodynamic drag. Never select agap based on competitive specs. For best fuel economy, always spec the shortest trailer gap possible to accommodate the specific applicationwhile still providing adequate swing clearance.

Avoid Add-on Devices - Devices such as bug deflectors and other "cosmetic" features disrupt airflow across the entire truck. Bug deflectors, forexample, can reduce fuel economy by as much as 2%.

Tires - Tire brand, tread pattern and compound selection can significantly impact fuel economy due to differences in tire rolling resistance. However, when selecting a tire other factors must also be considered; including cost, traction, wear characteristics and load capacity.

Fan Drive - Under normal circumstances a cooling fan is unloaded most of the time. Since on/off type fan drives consume less power whenunloaded than viscous drives, an on/off type fan drive is recommended for maximum fuel economy.

THESE LIMITATIONS AND EXCLUSIONS ARE IMPORTANT AND MUST BE READ AND UNDERSTOOD.

LIMITATIONS: Volvo Trucks obligation is limited to, at its sole option, repair or replacement of parts which are acknowledged by it to be defective. In the case of acknowledged defective assemblies, exchange with factory rebuilt units may occur. The defective parts or assemblies replaced shall become the property of Volvo Trucks. Warranty repairs performed by an authorized Volvo Trucks dealer in accordance with the terms of the warranty set forth herein are free of charge. Warranty repairs do not constitute an extension of the original warranty period for the engine or any part thereof. Warranty consideration can only be given if the deficiency is brought to the attention of an authorized Volvo Trucks dealer upon discovery and the engine must be made available, in a timely fashion during the coverage period, for repair.

NO PAYMENT OR OTHER COMPENSATION WILL BE MADE FOR CONSEQUENTIAL,

INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL EXPENSES OR DAMAGES OF ANY KIND. EXCLUSIONS: 1. REPAIR: Warranty consideration can only be given if the deficiency is brought to the attention of an authorized Volvo Trucks dealer upon discovery and the

truck must be made available, in a timely fashion during the warranty period, for repair. Failures resulting from the user’s unreasonable delay in making the truck available, after being notified of a potential product problem, are not covered.

2. DAMAGES: Damages due to accidents, misuse, negligence, improper operations, alterations, storage or transport, operation at excessive speeds, loading beyond the factory rated load capacity, and improper or insufficient maintenance services are not covered. Damages due to failure to follow Volvo Trucks North America’s recommended service procedures are considered damages due to improper maintenance services.

3. PROGRESSIVE DAMAGE: Damages due to failure of operator to take reasonable precautions to mitigate damage are not covered. Damages to covered part due to failure of non-covered part are not covered. Coverage is limited to failure of covered part directly causing failure of non-covered part, where operator took reasonable precautions to mitigate damages.

4. APPLICATION: The selling dealer is responsible for the correct application and/or specification for a vehicle sold to a customer. Vehicle application problems, including but not limited to, replacement of incorrect axle or transmission gear ratios, failures of component parts of vehicles being operated in excess of factory rated load capacities, or the use of a vehicle for a purpose of which it was not intended are not covered.

5. FUEL INJECTORS: Damage to due to fuel injectors due to erosion caused by poor fuel quality is not covered. 6. ALTERATIONS: Any vehicle or vehicle system repaired, altered, or inspected in any way, so as to adversely affect, in Volvo Trucks North America’s sole

bodies or equipment by other manufacturers or suppliers is not covered. 8. MAINTENANCE AND PARTS CONSUMED (“Consumables”): Normal maintenance services including, but not limited to, replacement of oil filters,

adjustments of the engine, injection pump, and all other adjustments, are not covered. Parts which are normally consumed or worn out during the engine’s normal service life and customarily replaced during usual maintenance service including but not limited to filters are not covered after the first 30 days from the in-service date.

9. PERFORMANCE COMPLAINTS: Performance complaints are not covered (for example, low power and poor fuel economy) unless caused by the failure of a qualified part.

10. OIL CONSUMPTION: Before a claim for excessive oil consumption will be considered, the owner must provide proof that all recommended maintenance has been performed and submit adequate documentation to show that oil consumption exceeds Volvo Trucks North America published standards. Under no circumstances will warranty pay for excessive oil consumption after 24 months or 250,000 miles (402336 km), whichever occurs first.

11. WEAROUT: Volvo Trucks North America does not cover normal wear of covered parts. Cylinder liner, piston and piston rings failures attributable to wear are specifically excluded from this warranty. The wear rate of parts in any engine, and especially those parts within the combustion area, will vary depending upon operating conditions and environment. Conditions, such as load, trailer configuration, road speed and road conditions, as well as the quality of fuel, lubrication oil, and all filters bear a direct relationship to the wear rate and resulting life of parts. Depending upon the severity of these various conditions, parts wear and resulting failure could occur within the time limit of the coverage.

12. NON-GENUINE PARTS: Any vehicle which has been repaired by use of parts and accessories, as well as major assemblies and exchange units, which do not meet factory standards and which cause a vehicle component or system to fail, are not covered.

13. ODOMETER READING: Any vehicle in which the odometer has been disconnected or the mileage reading has been altered and/or the actual mileage cannot be readily determined is not covered.

14. ACCESS TO INFORMATION: The user must allow Volvo Trucks North America full access to all data stored in all Electronic Control Modules; failure to do so may result in the loss of warranty coverage.

15. PREMIUM LABOR: Labor for overtime and/or shift differential is not covered. 16. EXCESSIVE LABOR: Excessive labor for a warrantable repair due to the prior installation of equipment or body is not covered. 17. MISC. EXPENSE: Meals, lodging, electronic messaging equipment, travel time and expense, loss of cargo, downtime, loss of profit/revenue, rental

vehicles, or driver’s wages and other miscellaneous expenses are not covered. Shop supplies, lube oil, lubricants, sealers, anti-freeze, filter elements and labor performed by a non-approved location are not covered.

18. ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS: Components or parts that are not installed by Volvo Trucks North America are not covered. During a warrantable repair, additional time to remove any customer installed bodies, components, and accessories will not be covered under warranty. Volvo Trucks North America factory manufacturing records will be determinative as to factory installed components.

19. TOWING: Towing and/or road service charges due to a failure of a non-covered component or from the result of an accident are not covered. Towing coverage is limited to a single tow per incident for covered vehicles that are accessible from a MAJOR paved highway and towed to the nearest authorized Volvo Trucks service center when a vehicle is inoperable or continued operation would result in additional damage due to a component listed in the Plan’s component coverage list. When towing is covered on this certificate, charges in excess of $1,000.00 will be rejected unless Volvo Action Service is contacted.

004645 VHD64FT200 Updated: October 31, 2005

One-Piece Roped-In Windshield Volvo trucks feature as standard equipment a large, 1-piece windshield for maximum visibility. This 2100 sq-in windshield offers panoramic visibility for the driver, and eliminates the traditional center post obstruction found in 2-piece windshields. This windshield is designed for quick replacement, as it is “roped” in using a specialized rubber molding and NOT glued in. That means the cab does not rely on the windshield for structural integrity. This also reduces risk of cracks due to cab flex and permits the windshield to be kicked out as an emergency exit. This “roped in” windshield offers serviceability advantages, as it takes about 2 hours to replace the windshield … instead of the 6 hours required for glued or bonded windshields. The windshield can also be replaced outdoors (even in inclement weather), while bonded windshields often require a warm and dry environment for proper adhesion (and curing) of the glue. Grooves molded into the window seal also are designed to divert rain water up and over the cab roof and away from the side windows, further aiding visibility. Solar-Managed Windshield Glass Standard on all Volvo trucks is solar-managed windshield glass, which reduces UV penetration into the cab. This helps reduce heat in the cab and sleeper by several degrees on a sunny day, compared to standard glass. Sloped Side Windows Volvo further optimizes visibility with sloped driver and passenger windows. This optimizes side-to-side visibility.

Tilt/Telescoping Steering Column Volvo’s steering column offers the flexibility of tilt and telescoping adjustment to optimize driving comfort and reduce driver fatigue. The steering column can be adjusted to a wide range of positions when the foot pedal (highlighted) is pressed to the floor. This allows both hands to be used in pulling the steering wheel to the most comfortable position. The foot pedal also prevents accidental adjustment of the steering column while driving. With a tilt of 0 – 30° and telescoping travel of up to 4.5 inches, the steering wheel and column can be adjusted to adapt to most drivers, regardless of height or seat position. Interior Hood Release The hood release is located inside the cab on the steering column. This prevents unauthorized access to the engine compartment. However, it also allows the hood to be released while standing on the ground.

Cab Air Suspension Volvo uses an advanced suspension technology to make the ride smoother and quieter in the cab. This innovative suspension uses outboard airbags and vertical shocks to dampen movement and isolate vibration from the suspension. A panhard rod also dampens lateral movement. The result is a very comfortable ride without excessive cab sway.

3-Point Retractable Safety Belts As inventor of the 3-point safety belt, Volvo was also the first in the world to make this safety innovation standard in Class 8 vehicles. The 3-point retractable safety belt is designed to keep drivers and passenger secure and optimizes the effectiveness of the driver-side airbag.

004645 VHD64FT200 Updated: October 31, 2005

Side Window Defroster The driver- and passenger-side doors on the VN feature a unique vent, which provides a curtain of air against the side windows. This is designed to keep the windows clear from moisture and fogging, but also provides additional air movement and comfort for the driver.

Cab Air Filter Clean air is critical to a healthy working environment. The VN is designed to allow air into the cab only through a high-efficiency air filter mounted in the engine compartment. This filter, with Volvo’s electronic climate control, can completely refresh cab air within minutes. Air is exhausted from the cab through one-way valves in the doors. This is designed to prevent moisture, pollen, or other contaminants from entering the cab and sleeper.Suspension Dump Valve This control valve is standard with Volvo Air Suspension, and allows the rear suspension air bags to be “dumped.” This lowers the suspension and allows the tractor to drive out from under a docked trailer.

Wide Door Opening The VN offers the widest door opening in the industry and is designed to provide safe and easy entry and exit. Doors open 60°, for an opening of 37 inches.

Recessed Door Handles The door handles on the VN are recessed to minimize wind resistance. They are also ergonomically designed for ease in opening the door.

Interior Grab Handles To assist with safe entry and exit in any weather conditions, the grab handles of the VN are mounted inside the cab. Grab handles are mounted at the front and rear of the door opening.

004645 VHD64FT200 Updated: October 31, 2005

Note: At present, engine-specific coolant hoses that are in close proximity to extremely hot components (i.e. turbocharger) will continue to be silicone hoses.

EPDM Coolant and Heater Hoses Volvo’s high-performance EPDM (ethylene propylene) rubber coolant and heater hoses give customers performance equal to silicone in heavy-duty truck applications, without silicone’s sensitivity to cuts or additional clamping requirements. Volvo’s EPDM hoses also avoid the initial expense and maintenance requirements of silicone. Volvo’s EPDM hose is the only EPDM hose that meets Volvo’s technical standards.* Engineering tests document that Volvo’s EPDM hose performs just as well as Volvo’s silicone hose in extreme cold weather operating conditions, and resists the effects of oil, mud, salt, acids, and ozone. It also exceeds SAE J20 – the industry standard – especially in four key areas:

1. Cold WeatherEffective operating temperature range is comparable to silicone for the heavy-duty vehicles: from -40oF to +275oF (-40°C to +135°C). Volvo’s EPDM is the same hose manufactured and used in Scandinavia’s extremely cold climate. It is designed to withstand: extreme cold and hot operating environments high under-hood and coolant temperatures

2. ClampingEPDM provides better clamping to stems and connectors than silicone. superior sealability greatly reduces the risk of cold coolant leaks

3. Water PermeationVolvo’s EPDM hose allows 90% less permeation of water molecules through the hose wall compared to silicone. Lower water permeation helps vehicles maintain the ideal 50:50 coolant concentration.

4. DurabilityVolvo’s EPDM hose offers greater tensile strength and durability than silicone. This provides: extended use with less cracking or hardening greater resistance to cuts and cover abrasion reduced compression of the hose at clamping (a leading cause of hose failure) resistance to electromechanical degradation

Offset, Self-Cleaning Steps The steps on the VN are offset for safer entry and exit. Their position, in conjunction with the recessed cab floor design, allows them to be easily seen from the driver’s seat. Their self-cleaning design works to keep them clear of mud and snow.

Suspended Pedals The automotive-style pedals on the VN are suspended to provide a more comfortable and natural foot position while driving. They also are designed to minimize potential injury to feet and ankles in a crash since they are not fastened to the floor; they are designed to push up and out of the way in an impact.

*Volvo’s Technical Regulation20450330 requires both silicone and EPDM to pass the same demanding performance criteria. While Volvo’s EPDM product passes this standard, other manufacturers do not.

Features: 455 hp and 1550-1750 lb-ft Dual-Torque Reduced Governor Cut in @ 1800RPM

The new Volvo Dual-Torque ratings, such as 1017T4, are engines with special emphasis on fuel economy. Each rating has a higher torque curve, and a lower torque curve, with the nominal horsepower for each rating associated with the higher torque curve. With Dual-Torque, the truck accelerates through all bottom gears in the lower torque curve. In the top two gears, the higher torque curve is available on demand under certain conditions. But, by operating on the lower curve through all the lower gears, certain vendor transmissions can be used with a 100 or 200 lb-ft lower rating than maximum torque. However, at resale time, the engine can not be uprated beyond the rating of the transmission. The Dual-Torque ratings will also have inferior driveability in mountainous terrain, as compared to Eco-Torque engines.

Additional Information on Dual-Torque

The Volvo D13 engine is an in-line six cylinder design with a displacement of 12.8 liters, and ratings of 375 to 500 HP, with 1450 to 1750 lb-ft of torque. This puts it right in the sweet spot for distribution, LTL, truckload, linehaul freight and vocational applications, while its weight - 2676 lbs- gives it a great ratio of power to weight.

The Volvo D13, derived from the popular D12, is currently the most popular engine above 10L in the world. Complete engine assembly and manufacture of the D13 crankshafts and camshafts are completed at Volvo Powertrain’s Hagerstown, Maryland plant. The D13 will be available in Volvo VNM, VNL, VHD, and VAH models.

The D13 engine is fully compliant with the EPA’14 Green House Gas (GHG) emission standards, while still delivering outstanding fuel economy, reliability, durability and serviceability. Volvo 2014 engines offer 100% “Passive Regeneration” of the diesel particulate filter (DPF). Volvo trucks equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) emissions control systems for EPA’10 will not undergo driving or parked active regeneration of the DPF during normal operating conditions. With the implementation of EPA’10 technology, Volvo engines have reduced diesel engine pollutants by 99% from original measured levels and produce Near Zero Emissions.

New Design Features:

2014 GHG Improvements provide a 1% increase in fuel economy utilizing low friction cylinder improvements along with optimizing fuel delivery. New 2-piece valve cover decreases replacement time making process easier and cleaner.

....additional on Dual-Torque On a steep grade, performance is enhanced when the engine automatically switches to the higher power and torque curve. Under this full-load, low-rpm condition, the engine runs at maximum efficiency but will revert to the low curve when the power demand is removed and cruise conditions are resumed. This saves fuel by encouraging operation under load at a lower more efficient rpm and makes an engine spec that is capable of cresting hills in the top gear. The driver soon learns that this exceptional performance is obtained by operating at low engine rpm.

The below example of a D13-425 hp 1450-1750 lb-ft engine paired with a 10 speed manual transmission illustrates how the Dual-Torque feature works. The truck is cruising at the Eco-Cruise set speed of 62 mph on the lower torque curve of 1450 lb-ft with a Brake Cruise setting of +5 mph. The first “Minor Hill” encountered is not large enough and conditions are not meet to trigger the change to the higher torque curve as the truck ascends the grade with minimum speed loss. The vehicle then rolls-out down the hill to approximately 67 mph and starts to ascend a “Larger Hill”. There is a higher torque demand on this Larger Hill, but the truck climbs the hill again without the need for the higher torque curve. The truck then rolls-out again down the next hill to approximately 65 mph and begins to start up a “Long, Steep Hill”. The engine is now under a full-load, low-rpm condition and switches to the higher 1750 lb-ft torque curve, allowing the vehicle to ascend the grade, remaining in 10

th gear.

After the last hill, the road grade flattens out and the torque demand drops off, allowing the engine to revert back to the lower torque curve to maximize fuel economy.

Volvo EPA’14 engines maintain EPA‘10’s 100% “Passive Regeneration” of the DPF.

Passive Regeneration, also known as NO2-Based Regeneration, occurs at 500 degrees F., a lower temperature than Active Regeneration, which occurs at 1100 degrees F.

Active Regeneration, or O2-Based Regeneration, uses high temperature to simply oxidize the soot out of the filter. The high temperature comes from ‘dosing’, or adding fuel through the 7th injector, located on the outlet housing of the turbocharger. This increases fuel consumption. This fuel oxidizes in the catalyst of the DPF where it raises the heat to the 1100 degrees required to oxidize the soot.

The 2014 engines will maintain a 7th injector. It will be used on all models to aid in warm-up of the emission control

system on a cold start-up. It will also be there in the extra-normal situation should a regeneration assist ever be needed, for example due to ‘extremely severe’ weather conditions.

A key enabler of Passive Regeneration is the correct NOx to soot ratio. This is critical. Volvo gets the correct NOx to soot ratio by using the low soot of the Volvo engine together with a higher NOx engine-out level. The increased NOx comes from a lower rate of EGR.

It has been shown with our test trucks, including some that have operated through two winters in stop-and-go urban delivery in hilly terrain (an arduous duty cycle), that none have yet experienced a single active regeneration in normal on-highway operation.

Advantages of No Active Regeneration: No dash lights come on No special driver training or familiarization Much lower system temperatures Reduced thermal cycling No limitations on where the driver can go

No interruptions of PTO activity Higher productivity Reduced consumption of fuel Lower operating expenses

The net result is a truck meeting the EPA’14 regulation with better fuel efficiency and near-zero NOx.

Carryover Design Features:

The following features, introduced in 2007, will be carried over intact into 2014.

Ultra High Fuel Injection Pressure – the design target for maximum fuel injection system pressures hadbeen raised 20% from 29,000 psi to 35,000 psi, for improved combustion and lower emissions. Thesuccessful dual-solenoid fuel injector used first with the US’02 D12D has been enhanced withproprietary actuation strategy.

Precision-Flow Cooled EGR System uses three state-of-the-art components to provide exactly the rightamount of EGR with fast response.

Sliding nozzle variable geometry turbocharger with electronic actuation –– toresponsively provide the needed EGR pressure.

Poppet-style hydraulic EGR valve – to accurately provide the needed EGR flow. Delta-pressure flow sensor – to provide precise measurement of the EGR flow and

integrate the signals back to the turbo actuator and EGR valve through a closed-loopelectronic management system.

These three system components, first introduced together in 2005 on the Volvo D16, combine to provide exceptional fuel economy and improved engine response.

All Volvo 2014 engines fully comply with the latest EPA mandates. This means all regulated pollutants have been reduced by 99% from untreated levels. Yet Volvo meets these demands with outstanding reliability and fuel economy. This is because we use a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system designed for the highest efficiency. Which allowed us to pursue a passive regeneration concept that uses NOx in place of diesel fuel to regenerate the soot, further reducing your cost of operation.

volvo eco-torque and dual-torque ratingsVolvo’s new Eco-Torque feature provides a new twist on encouraging fuel-economy driving. By switching to a lower torque curve in the top two gears, but allowing the higher torque curve during lug-back, Eco-Torque encourages low-rpm driving and provides a lower power level in non-demanding situations. But when conditions demand high torque at low rpm, the engine torque will switch up to the higher curve, in many cases allowing the hill to be topped in the highest gear.

Dual-Torque ratings have a similar dual personality, but serve a special purpose. They take advantage of several vendor transmissions that will allow a higher torque in the top two gears. This means that they must operate in their lower torque in the low gears.

high-efficiency aftertreatment system

Volvo’s 2014 engines include high-efficiency aftertreatment systems that save you fuel and reduce maintenance.

For example, our SCR catalyst has a full 40˝ between the point of introduction of the Diesel Exhaust Fluid and where it meets the catalyst. This allows for the DEF to fully and completely convert to ammonia.

More importantly, our SCR catalyst has three bricks where others have two. This added capacity allows a greater catalyst efficiency, which enables our No-Regen strategy. We can adjust the EGR flow rate down while still eliminating all of the NOx in the catalyst. This allows us to deliver better fuel economy.

D13 drivetrain recommendations

It is critical to specify the truck properly to achieve maximum fuel economy and performance.

Ask your salesman to help you choose a rear axle ratio appropriate for your expected cruising speed and gross combination weight.

Volvo 2014 engines have been designed to achieve maximum fuel economy by cruising at low engine rpm. In D13 line haul specifications, the target is 1375 rpm at 65 mph.

For example, with 80K lbs GCW, 1650 lbs-ft torque, 295/75R22.5 drive tires and 0.74 top gear ratio, the 3.36:1 axle ratio would come closest to the 1375 rpm at 65 mph recommendation.

With 0.78 ratio transmission, you should use a 3.21:1 ratio for the same rpm at 65.

Never specify an EPA ’10 Volvo engine for a cruise speed above 1600 rpm.

The Low-Inertia™ Super 13 Versatility and low shift effort in a premium Fuller® transmission. Low-Inertia Concept: Innovative, patented design is indentified in the Eaton Fuller nomenclature by the letter “L” (as in RTLO-18913A). These transmissions feature a simple mainshaft which is not splined to the auxiliary gear. This unique design eliminates the added mass, drag and inertia of the entire auxiliary section. During upshifts, where both the lever and splitter button are moved together, the low-inertia mainshaft is quick brought into sync, resulting in fast easy, shifts.

Features: • “Super 13” features patented low-inertia design concept that makes shifting smoother,

faster and easier than ever before. • Ratio flexibility with 16.9 to 1 overall reduction. • Gathered gear ratios in hi-range provide potential fuel savings by helping keep engine

RPM’s low to remain in the engine’s optimum fuel efficiency band. • Simplified shifting with preselect on all button shifts. • Faster, smoother range and splitter shifts and improved cold weather performance due

to design improvements. • Quieter operation and increased durability with helical gears in auxiliary section. • 0.73 and 0.86 overdrives for optimum cruise RPM’s. Features: The VN and VHD day cabs are available with a unique exhaust solution that does not protrude behind the cab. The vertical exhaust pipe is located in the B-pillar depression on the passenger side in a "Pack Stack" design. This exhaust solution provides a clean back of cab (BOC) above the frame allowing body builders to utilize the space behind the cab efficiently.

The stack is a 6” pipe surrounding a 5” perforated inner pipe. Fiberglass insulation separates the inner and outer pipes. This reduces heat and noise in the cab and contributes to the overall operating comfort and efficiency of the VN and VHD.
