Via Media Health Initiative

Recognising the need for an increase in number of legal and registered organ donations, Via Media Health has been running a knowledge sharing campaign, it started in August, 2009 with India’s first ever swap liver transplant followed by many other Organ Donation programs on different occasions.

Via Media Health is in its 11th year of operation is India’s largest comprehensive healthcare communication service provider. We are aware of the ever evolving role of communication in the society and combine this knowledge with skill, creativity and innovations to provide solution based communication services to make India aware and healthier.

Media forms an integral part of all the programs so that the message could be disseminated to each and every one across the nation. So far more than a dozen of programs have been organized by Via Media Health in association with different partners like Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India, Association of Medical Consultants, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, HEAL Foundation, Doctors Republic and Indian Medical Academy.

The campaign has two pronged approach:

1. Stakeholder sensitization & involvement

2. Mass awareness and behaviour alteration

Objective• The objective of this campaign is to educate the media and masses for the requirement of

organ donation in India and increase the level of awareness• To impart the knowledge of organ donation, types, scarcity, availability and the regulation

required from Government in India

Indian Medical Academy is a forum of healthcare professionals, who have come together to educate and empower people at large, including doctors, by means of webinars, healthcare PR, scientific events & conferences, awareness activities & campaigns and studies & surveys. We had been in past associated with ‘Diabetes Blue Fortnight’ campaign, ‘Vector-borne Diseases’ Seminar, Child Health Congress, Medical Ethics Conundrum and ‘Access @ Bottom of Pyramid’ seminar among many others.

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is a 650-bed multi-speciality hospital in Rajinder Nagar, Delhi. It provides comprehensive medical services to patients from all over Southeast Asia. It is the only hospital in the private sector that has maintained nearly 100% bed occupancy. The hospital’s Minimal Access Surgery department was the first such department in South Asia. The Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is committed to make available 20% beds of total strength for admission of indigenous and financially weaker section of the society. In addition to that the hospital has a specialized outpatient department for all disciplines in which patients are seen free of charge.

Indian Medical Academy

The Association of Medical Consultants was established in 1972 by a small group of energetic active and concerned medical consultants from distant suburbs who often assembled and animatedly discussed their common problems. It is now one of the fastest growing Associations of Specialist Doctors in Mumbai and boasts of a membership strength of 7000 Medical consultants. AMC represents Consultants practicing at corporate and non corporate Tertiary care referral Hospitals (both Government and Private) and individual Consultants practicing through their own consulting rooms, Clinics & Nursing Homes spread across Greater Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane districts.

DR-Doctors Republic, a MED MEDIA through which Healthcare Practitioners across the globe can connect; a forum, which through its various interactive interfaces, offers a unique knowledge exchange opportunity and an online hub , which offers turnkey solutions to some of the problems related to medical education and clinical practice.

HEAL Foundation, (Health Education & Awareness League) Wedded to the cause of improving, innovating and implementing healthcare programs in the country, Health Education & Awareness League, better known as HEAL Foundation is a not for profit group, registered under the Societies Registration Act. With our motto ‘Health, Hope, Happiness’ at the heart of our every endeavour, we aim to make India more aware and healthier.

We have nurtured a strong social advocacy platform for facilitating communication between the knowledgeable and the knowledge deprived with the purpose of raising public awareness on health issues and effecting desirable changes.

A Seminar “The Organ Transplantation Conundrum: Making patients the priority” The Constitution Club of India, Rafi Marg, New Delhi, July 10, 2012

HEAL foundation in association of Indian Medical Academy organised the seminar with an intention to seek answers to various questions around organ donation and transplantation.

The objective of the seminar was to highlight various issues faced by the patients as well as hospitals and doctors for organ transplantation. The aim was to make the process of organ transplantation more patients centric to ease the burden and trauma faced by the patients and their family. We highlighted various problems which increase the chasm between demand and supply in organ transplantation and facilitated discussions to find effective solutions to counter them.

Many topics were discussed along with the recent incident of death of Rohit Chaddha during Liver Donation.

Indian Organ Donation Day

Via Media in association with The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare organized the Organ Donation Congress 2010 and 6th World and 1st Indian Organ Donation Day on 27th November at New Delhi.

The objective of this congress was to promote organ transplantation in India as we lag far behind others nations in terms of organ donation. The event witnessed active participation from the leading experts discussing both Indian and international issues pertaining to organ donation like, the challenges ahead for India and the need of organ for patients with organ failure.

Donorthon – A walk to promote Organ Donation

Over 1000 people involving doctors, students and organ donors came together for a 2 kilometer walk to promote the cause of organ donation from Noida Mor to Akshardham Temple organized by Via Media Health in associations with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH). This event was organized to mark the achievement of SGRH becoming the First Hospital in South Asia to complete 500 liver transplants.

liver Donor’s Day

Owing to the pressing need of potential donors, a function was organized by Via Media in association with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on the occasion of Liver Donor Day in October, 2009. This function was primarily organized to felicitate over 400 Liver Donors by the Chief Guest, Shri. Kapil Sibbal, Hon’ble Minister for Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, During the program key points came up like, The need

to have more ‘organ transplant centres’ in the country can be facilitated by having a systematic National Training Program in place.

On 29 June, 2012, Via Media Health in association with Associations of Medical Consultants, initiated an awareness drive in Mumbai to educate people about Organ Donation and clear their doubts and stigma attached to it. Health writers’ workshop was also organised to educate media about the rising need of organ donation in our country.

First successful swap liver transplant surgery in India

Via Media Health organised a press confrence for Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on 19 August 2009 after the successful completion of India’s first Swap Liver Transplant Surgery. This miraculous surgery gave life to two patients of liver failure living in different parts of the world. The aim of this PC was to creat awareness amongs masses about the unique opportunity of match making between donors and recipients from different families, thus helping save more lives with liver transplants.
