A brief history of paving• In Roman times, the Appian Way (Via Appia) was wide enough to

allow vehicles travelling in opposite directions to pass; the surface, paved with basalt and bordered with sidewalks of pounded earth, was about 13 feet wide (the statutory width for main routes at the time when the road was built).

• The first bituminous (asphalt) mixtures produced in the United States were used for sidewalks, crosswalks, and even roads starting in the late 1860s.

• The first concrete highway constructed in the United States was a 24 mile long, 9 ft wide, 5 in. thick strip of concrete pavement built near Pine Bluff, Arkansas, in 1913—five years after the introduction of the Model T Ford.

• Concrete permeable pavers gained acceptance in the 1980’s followed by plastic “geogrids” and plastic pavers in the 1990’s.

VIA vs. Concrete and Asphalt

VIA Benefits:•Via cost per square foot is 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of concrete or asphalt

•Eliminates the need for soil stabilization and costly storm drain construction

•Water permeable to keep run-off pollutants out of rivers, lakes and oceans

•Reduces the need for detention/retention pond construction and maintenance

•Improves dust abatement

•Conforms easily around existing trees or irregular shapes

Drawbacks of concrete and asphalt:•Higher cost

•Not permeable, storm water considerations require additional construction costs

•Heaving/cracking in colder climates

•Asphalt requires sealing, patching, does not conform around trees well
