For the past five years, the SCRC Board and committees have made progress in many areas, and we recognize that many tasks lie ahead for this non-profit effort. One particularly big step is just around the corner: On July 9, the Board will be asking the County Commissioners for a donation of 30 acres in the East Yards to serve as SCRC's building site. Then, throughout the summer, we'll be surveying the community, meeting with our future partners, and continuing to raise funds. In September, we'll update our cost estimates and planning documents as described within this issue—with an anticipated capital campaign kick off in 2020. 2016 SCRC OPERATIONS STUDY

In 2016, 100% thanks to community donations, SCRC hired thenationally-known recreational facility experts, Ballard*King &Associates (see sidebar), to conduct an operations study, whichincluded financial projections for the concepts envisioned at thetime. These ideas were also documented within conceptualdrawings completed by ARC Architects and described withinSCRC's concept and business brief. An integral part of the Ballard*King study was a market analysis.Looking at the characteristics of our market area allowed SCRC tounderstand what type of fee structure the future facility wouldrequire and, more importantly, what would be affordable to arearesidents. Report authors were made aware that the plannedfacility would not depend on a local tax-based solution. It was alsomade clear that SCRC must be accessible to everyone. The 2016 Ballard*King report and ARC's work on the concept wereinstrumental in demonstrating the SCRC vision to funders. Theprocess of creating these documents helped us clarify our vision. In the almost four years since, we've been working to identify thepartnerships, services, and facilities that would best serve thecommunity. To gather all necessary information, SCRC isdeveloping a community survey related to programming andholding in-depth conversations with our future partners. With this input, it will soon be time to return to our planningdocuments to (1) ensure that the facility will be designed to bestserve all of its future uses and (2) make sure we understand thecosts to build and operate the facility. Having both a clear visionand precise figures to present to the community, our partners, andfunders are essential for a project of this scale. For these reasons, the SCRC Board is raising the necessary funds to continue workwith ARC Architects and Ballard*King & Associates (for moreinformation, see "Ask Campaign," p.03).

The 2019 Ask Campaign centers on raising funds for therefinement of the planning documents described on page 02 ofthis newsletter. Beyond planning, these documents are crucial toSCRC's future capital campaign as well as to fundraising in allcategories (see sidebar). SCRC as well as donors need to knowwhat the project entails and its bottom line. ARC Architects quote $21,000 for the floor plan, site plan, 3-Drenderings, building cost estimate, a written program summary, and concept statement. This work is the expected the next step inthe planning process, and it will reflect partners' needs along withthe results of a community programming survey. Additional fundswill be needed to work with Ballard*King to update the financialsfor facility operations. The Board has tasked itself with reaching out to individuals whowould be interested in advancing this effort. If you wish tocontribute, please call us today: 406-563-0252.

Community VoicesBY KIKI SKAKLES

I'm writing to explain why I donate to the Smelter City RecreationComplex and why I ask that my fellow community members do thesame. I know the SCRC group is working very hard to bring thismulti-part facility to Anaconda, and it's an incredible idea. Just think: It will be something that anyone from 1 to 100 will beable to use. It bothers me that seniors currently have no place towalk or to be active during our long, harsh winters. SCRC willchange that. Seniors, adults, young men and women, high schoolstudents, grade schoolers, and small tots will have so manyexciting new opportunities to look forward to all year long. I remember how, as a college student, I'd come home everyweekend because I loved Anaconda—and that hasn't changed. My brother and sister also came back to Anaconda because theylove it too. As Anacondans, it's a great time to do somethingpositive and make SCRC a reality. SCRC will lead to better healthand well-being for all, and it will add so much to the sense ofcommunity we already have. What's more, it'll give people anotherreason to want to come home. Let's give these folks our support!

Food for ThoughtGOOD READS: ONE SMALL STEP CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE—THE KAIZEN WAY A BOOK BY ROBERT MAURER , PH.D.

Can starting small bring about big change? According to Dr.Robert Maurer, it can change your life. In his 2014 book, Maurertakes a look at the Japanese technique, kaizen, which breaks largetasks into small, manageable, forward-moving steps. The strategyapplies not only to tasks, but also to actions, questions, thinking, and problem-solving. Whether you're contemplating getting inshape or dreaming of launching a new business, the idea is toembody a mindset of continuous improvement. Even the largestgoals can be reached by constantly and consistently challengingyourself to take the next small step. This is good news for SCRC, which has been taking many small(but critical!) steps in the journey to bring about big change.Although recreation facilities exist all over the country and world, creating one from scratch is something completely new forAnaconda. In fact, it's the biggest community project of recenttimes! Developing a new organization and facilities to serve thecommunity means getting very clear about our purpose, buildingsolid relationships and partnerships, and making sure that theproject is well aligned with community needs. Our Board, staff, and consultants have had to participate in new processes, learnnew skills, and do many new things just to get the organization upand running! We have many more new steps to make the SCRCvision a reality, and we're taking them together.
