Kashmir is again on the boil. Although it has merged with the Indian union like six hundred odd other native States and people of the State have endorsed the merger through every election, interested parties have been creating discontent and provoking agitation time and again giving the impression that Kashmir is different and it must be treated differently with special status. Things have come to a stage that the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had the audacity to state in the Assembly that Kashmir has not merged with the Indian Union. It is strange that the Centre has allowed the statement to go unchallenged.

Continuing turbulence in Kashmir augurs ill, not only for the State but for the whole of India. The demand for the autonomy of Kashmir will only strengthen fundamentalist forces in Pakistan. Any dilution of our commitment to Kashmir will be suicidal and will lead to similar demands by other disgruntled and divisive elements in various other parts of India. The sacrifice India has made in terms of precious human lives and financial resources to keep Kashmir an integral part is too great to be ignored. Besides thousands of our brave Jawans great patriots like Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookharjee have laid down their lives to save Kashmir. Kashmir is non-negotiable.
