Victor Shodipo, Renaissance

Professionals: Genuine Altruism or

Creative Deceit. But words are things, and a small drop of ink,

falling like dew upon a thought, produces

that which makes thousands, perhaps millions, think.

Lord Byron (1788 - 1824)

British poet

Week after week Ive watched with part dismay, part intrigue at

the resilience of this group of self-appointed messiahs of the Nigerian

people who have dedicated themselves to saving their people from

perceived injustice from the newly appointed cbn governor Lamido

Sanusi. Hiding under the cloak of R.P. with a false name in

victorshodipo, it would seem that the group had done a crash course in

movie production because their approach has all the trappings of a

poorly scripted Nollywood movie: the stage/set is on the pages of

various national newspapers, the villain who is usually the person in a

position of power is identified in the cbn governor and the self-selected

underdog or heroes are identified as the R.P. and week in week out,

poorly acted drama is played out on the pages of these newspapers,

with suspense and intrigue and if one is not careful, you are likely to be

swept away in the flood of allegations and propaganda spewed forth by

this group and completely lose the plot.

There are a few things that do not add up in this extravagant campaign

carried out knowingly or unknowingly to smear the reputation of the

person of the cbn governor and if you have not been won over already

by this group, then please consider these when forming your ownopinion:

y  The sanitization exercise initiated by the new cbn governor was

made necessary because of the rot and decay that had become

the curse of the banking industry. This organized, legalized looting

began and became prolific during the term of Prof Chukwuma

Soludo. Where was this R.P. group when all this was taking place?

Why were they not taking out full page advertorials to warn

Nigerians of what the custodians of their hard-earned savings

were up to? Could it be that they benefitted from the goings-on

then and now seek revenge on the new cbn governor for

overturning their kettle of fish?

y  Allegation after allegation is being made every week and printed

on the pages of Newspapers but to what purpose really? If theyare really serious about getting justice for all these grievances, Im

sure some of R.P. members are enlightened enough to know that

there are agencies, constituted authorities established for the sole

purpose of addressing such issues. Why bring them to public

notice in such blatant way? What do they hope to achieve other

than smearing the reputation of cbn governor?

y  Do you know how much it costs to take a full page advertorial in anational daily? Find out and make the calculation. These people

have been taking full page advertorials for a while now and if we

tally up the amount of funds that has gone into this little tirade,

you will come to the same conclusion I arrived at: too much

money is being thrown away on a seemingly ineffectual crusade.

There is definitely some level of political undertone and I wouldnt

be surprised one bit if R.P. turned out to be a sham; just a front

for some corrupt public figure who has had his fill of looted publicfunds and chose to use this as an avenue to target political

enemies . . . a very expensive and admirable pastime I must admit

though not at all original or creative.

y  They always claim at the end of each torrent that Nigerians

demand an answer .Who are these Nigerians who demand an

answer. Whose purpose do they really serve? Why should they try

and second-guess what Nigerians want/demand? Off the top of my head right now I could give you a list of what Nigerians

demand/want and not surprisingly, due process followed in

sanitizing the banking sector is not in the first 100. . . . constant

electricity, pipe borne potable(non-sachet)water, good roads,

abundant employment opportunities, adequate security of lives

and property, world-class educational infrastructure just to

mention a few.

y  The most distressing thing about all these is that the general

public is gradually being seduced into playing a less passive and

more active role in this movie production without knowing all the

facts. Ask the average person who reads one of these dailies and

Im sure the view youll get will not be too far off the path of

enlightenment as illuminated by this group.

Dont be mistaken, I do expect transparency, fairness, due process,

respect for the rule of law and a holistic approach from the cbn

governor as it concerns the ongoing reforms in the Nigerian banking

sector. What I do not appreciate is the way in which this group is

using every single inexactness in the process of carrying out of these

reforms to sling mud across board and an important note to

remember about mud-slinging is that even if you miss your target,

youll still have dirty hands. My advice: get your facts together, accumulate evidence/proof of wrong-doing, alert the appropriate

authorities and follow it up, even all the way to the presidency and

Inspector-General of police. That, in my opinion, will do more

towards setting things right than public display of unsolicited,

unverifiable information. But then, why take my advice; Im sure the

newspapers are grateful for regular income theyve been getting for

the advertorials. Radio jingles and TV commercials may be in thepipeline and who knows, a TV station solely dedicated to the cbn

governor may even be in the offing. (Renaissance TV has a certain

ring to it!)

The propagandist's purpose is to make one set of people forget that certain other sets of people

are human.
