DESCRIPTION
Despite its prominence, Victoria Embankment is one of the capitalʼs most unexploited urban assets. Acting as a significant vehicular through-route for central London, much of the surface area is taken up by fast-moving traffic lanes as well as by car and coach parking bays, with a continuous pavement along the river. Given the institutional nature of many of the grand buildings, the frontage along Victoria Embankment is often severe and bland with few entrances and activities at ground level. In addition, there are a number of urban parks – some historic and well-designed, others poorly designed and less accessible – that may offer significant potential. The success of the pedestrian promenade on the South Bank – from County Hall to the Tate Modern – gives an indication of Victoria Embankmentʼs potential to become an integral part of Londonʼs pedestrian experience.This project was aimed at developing a new vision and set of design solutions that responded to the Victoria Embankment\'s full urban potential.
