Locally, we explore the momentous events that defined African-American history inSouthern Nevada with Vegas PBS’ documentary African Americans: The Las VegasExperience. The documentary tells the rich history of African-Americans in the city.Firsthand accounts, archival footage and detailed recreations put Las Vegas’ CivilRights era in context, letting viewers in on this fundamental piece of our local identity.Broadway in the Hood: An artScene Special explores the role of performance art tomotivate and inspire a community in performance at the West Las Vegas Library.

This series dispels these myths and otherinaccuracies about Africa through a detailedand riveting examination of significant histori-cal events, such as the rise of its powerful king-doms, the growth of extensive trade networkswith the Middle East, Europe and China, sem-inal technological and artistic discoveries, andits peoples’ resilience in the face of harrowingpast traumas.

The special presents a new vision not only ofAfrica’s pivotal place in world history, but alsothe world’s relation to Africa.

Sealab: American Experience Tuesday, February 5 at 9 p.m.

This new special tells the mostly for-gotten story of the U.S. Navy’s daring programthat tested the limits of human endurance, rev-olutionized the way humans explored the oceanand laid the groundwork for undersea militarymissions to come. In the spring of 1964, ScottCarpenter — already famous for being the sec-ond American to orbit the earth — waspreparing for a new mission, not into space asan astronaut but into the sea as one of theNavy’s newly-minted “aquanauts.”

These divers who attempted to chart theocean’s depths faced barriers that had thwart-ed humans for centuries: near total blackness,bone-jarring cold and intense pressure thatcould disorient the mind and crush the body.Aboard Sealab, Carpenter and his fellowexplorers would attempt to break throughthose barriers — going deeper and stayingunderwater longer than anyone had donebefore. Their daring exploits were beginning to

capture the nation’s attention, but a deadlytragedy would prematurely end their pioneer-ing work.

Dictator’s Playbook Wednesdays at 10 p.m.

Dictators have had a profound effect on the20th century. How did they seize and wieldpower? What forces rose up against them orresisted them in secret? How did they finallycome to the bitter end? Through historical con-text and analysis, this series explores how thesedictators functioned, how they influenced eachother and why they succeeded or failed.

On February 6, learn how Francisco Francoused the tactics of colonial war to win controlof Spain. Driven by a deeply conservativevision, he used torture, murder and incarcera-tion to transform Spanish society. In the con-cluding episode on February 13, see how IdiAmin used lessons learned in the colonial

Greely Expedition: AmericanExperience Tuesday, February 12 at 9 p.m.

In 1881, 25 men led by LieutenantAdolphus Greely sailed from the harbor of St.John’s, Newfoundland. Their destination wasLady Franklin Bay in the high Arctic, wherethey planned to collect a wealth of scientificdata. Three years later, only six survivorsreturned, with a daunting story of shipwreck,starvation, mutiny and cannibalism. Drawingon a documentary record that includes scien-

tific accounts, diaries, photographs and letters,the film reveals the nearly unbearable pres-sures experienced by the members of the expe-dition, and shows how poor planning, personal-ity clashes, questionable decisions and purebad luck conspired to turn a noble scientificmission into a human tragedy.

Secrets of the Dead: The Nero Files Wednesday, February 20 at 10 p.m.

The Roman emperor Nero is considered oneof history’s greatest criminals — a cruel,insane and brutal ruler. His name has becomesynonymous with evil, and he stands accused ofkilling his step-brother, his wife and his moth-er, as well as burning Rome to the ground forhis own artistic inspiration. But are these sto-

ries true? Was Nero a far better ruler than he’sever been given credit for? Recent research,modern interpretations of historical sources andnew discoveries cast a different light on theaccusations levelled at the Roman emperor.

Roads to Memphis: AmericanExperience Tuesday, February 26 at 9 p.m.

Witness the fatefully entwined stories ofassassin James Earl Ray and his target, Dr.Martin Luther King Jr., against the backdropof the seething and turbulent forces inAmerican society that led these two men totheir violent and tragic collision in Memphis,Tennessee, on April 4, 1968. Based on the bookby Hampton Sides (“Ghost Soldiers”), theprogram relies on eyewitness testimony fromKing's inner circle and the officials involved inRay's capture and prosecution following anintense two-month international manhunt.

Volcanoes create the land we live on, emit gas that

forms the air we breathe, spew minerals from the

center of the Earth and make homes for spectacular

natural history.

Volcanoes are the portal to the earth’s fiery

magma heart; one might imagine that life above

ground would avoid living nearby. But a surprising

number of animals survive and thrive alongside

volcanoes are erupting on our planet. This film will

Set in a mining camp during the California Gold Rush, saloon

owner Minnie has her sights set on the mysterious Dick Johnson,

and nothing — not horses, hangmen, nor a high-stakes poker

game — can keep her from finding true love.

Deborah Voigt sings the title role of Minnie in Giancarlo Del Monaco’s 1991 production,

with Marcello Giordani as Dick Johnson (the disguised bandit Ramerrez) and Lucio Gallo as

the villainous sheriff Jack Rance. San Francisco Opera Music Director Nicola Luisotti

conducts the work, which the composer told The New York Times in 1910 he considered

“the best of [his] operas.”

he American Graduate initiative is public media’s long-term commitment, made

possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), to help young people

succeed in school, career and life. Each year since American Graduate was launched

in 2011, the high school graduation rate has risen and in 2016 reached a record

84.1 percent nationally. However, while the high school diploma is a key launching point into a

student’s future success, it is not the final destination. As such, in January 2018, CPB

embarked on the next phase of the initiative, American Graduate: Getting to Work, with a focus

on school and business partnerships to help prepare students with the skill sets and training

necessary to be part of the work force needed in high-demand fields.

Vegas PBS is a proud partner with CPB to ensure our local community receives the bene-

fits of such initiatives and has produced a series of

interviews with students who are on the path to earn-

ing skilled jobs through Career and Technical

Education programs. Students discuss the impor-

tance of refining the soft skills of interviewing, gain-

ing experience that leads to a career and finding

careers aligned with personal interests. Partners have

clearly indicated the need not only to focus on in-demand career pipelines, but also to focus on

the soft skills needed to be successful.Vegas PBS has also aired two special episodes of its pub-

lic affairs show, Nevada Week, focusing on developing a middle-skills labor force in Nevada that

included panelists from six community partners. Employer interviews and hands-on segments,

showing our audience real-world experiences in the workforce will also air.

Additionally,Vegas PBS has implemented an online career pathway course initiative for high

school students in partnership with the Clark County School District’s Nevada Learning Academy.

High school students are able to enroll in online Information Technology, Health Science, and

Business Management career pathway courses. Vegas PBS also works closely with the Clark

County School District to offer middle skills career fairs to support the educational communi-

ty and provide assistance with critical labor shortages.

The American Graduate: Getting to Work initiative is another way that Vegas PBS is respon-

sive to community needs and began this work by conducting local needs assessments so that

program delivery is responsive to community priorities.The station will continue to curate con-

tent that will build awareness and dialogue through broadcast, social channels and in-person

community-based events.Vegas PBS is helping to increase the alignment between schools, con-

tinuing education entities, businesses and community partner networks so that our young peo-

ple have greater access to resources needed to pursue the high-demand careers available today

and in the future.

of feminist singer and activist Holly Near. Holly is a unique combination of

entertainer, teacher and activist. Starting in the early 1970s, she promoted

a variety of left-wing political causes with music that touched on folk, rock

and the musical theater. She began her work against the Vietnam War and

for the last 40 years has worked on global social justice coalition-building in

the women’s and lesbian movements.

FRONTLINE: Right to FailTuesday, February 26 at 10 p.m. After decades in institutions, a man with schizophre-

nia faces violence and death after the court man-

dates that he live on his own. In collaboration with

ProPublica, this special investigates a court-ordered

effort to move those with serious mental illness into

independent living. FRONTLINE is the flagship inves-

tigative journalism program of the Public Broadcast-

ing Service (PBS), producing award-winning in-depth

Richard M. Sherman: Songs of a LifetimeThursday, February 21 at 11 p.m. This Emmy® Award-nominated special celebrates the legendary Disney songwriter Richard

M. Sherman, whom with his brother Robert, composed some of the most beloved songs of all

time. Richard is joined by a brilliant cast of performers, including the star of Broadway's

“Mary Poppins” Ashley Brown, as well as Juliana Hansen,Wesley Alfvin and The Dapper Dans

of Disneyland. They perform classic songs from “Mary Poppins,”“Jungle Book,”“Winnie the

Pooh,”“Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and more, composed by Sherman.

Meet three young men who bond together to escape volatile families in their

Rust Belt hometown. Through a shared love of skateboarding, this special takes

an intimate look into friendships and the resulting bonds that are as strong as

any between members of a conventional family. The captivating coming-of-age

story tackles topics like domestic violence, relationships and masculinity, all

while its three central subjects approach adulthood. As they face adult responsi-

bilities, unexpected revelations threaten their decade-long friendship. A critical

hit, the film has won numerous awards, including the U.S. Documentary Special

Jury Award for Breakthrough Filmmaking at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. In

an exploration of what it means to become a man, this film is a revelatory, heart-

breaking and hopeful story that opens a much-needed discussion about experi-

ences usually kept in the shadows.
