The benefits of clay bricks keep stacking up
Clay brick is secure, an investment for life
As one of the world’s most sought after
and trustworthy sources of sustainable
building materials, clay bricks are
renown for their strength and secure
investment potential. The quality
construction, quiet calm and ageless
appeal of a solid clay brick home will
protect your family for generations
to come.
Clay brick is energy efficient
For energy efficient warmth in winter
and cool in summer, clay brick combines
perfectly with passive building design
to harness natural sources of energy.
The natural density and thermal insulating
qualities of clay moderate building
temperature and reduce energy
consumption rates, to provide year
round comfort and savings.
Clay brick is low maintenance
The most endearing quality of a clay
brick home is its ability to withstand the
test of time, even under the harshest
environmental conditions. Clay bricks
don’t need paint or other treatments to
maintain aesthetics and durability.
They are strong, reliable and relatively
maintenance free, saving you on the cost
and time required to upkeep your home,
compared to lighter weight materials.
Style and design
Clay bricks add distinct style to any type
of home. Their natural colours and
textures enable you to create striking
façade contrasts or more traditional
neutral colour tones.
By investing in new technology
Austral Bricks have been able to introduce
new kiln firing techniques to produce clay
bricks with a variety of surface finishes,
exciting colours and different sizes.
The result is a wonderful range of
clay bricks for you to build a stylish,
contemporary home.
Clay brick is sustainable
Made from organic minerals found in
shale and local, naturally abundant
sources of clay; clay brick’s long-lasting
life cycle offers ongoing environmental
and health benefits. Durable, re-usable,
free from contaminants and naturally
resistant to pests or fire, clay brick is safe
to live in, making it the ultimate material
in responsible and economical home
building design.
Clay bricks are fully reusable
They are one of the very few materials
that can be reused (not just recycled)
with all their original qualities intact.
And if they are consigned to landfill,
clay bricks are chemically inert and can’t
pollute groundwater or contaminate soil.
Clay brick manufacturing is highly efficient
Austral Bricks’ super-plants use the latest
high-tech automated controls and a
high-efficiency kiln to achieve energy
savings of 30 percent over previous
technology. Our plants are also water
self-sufficient, have low emissions and
operate on zero waste.
Clay bricks out perform concrete bricks
Clay bricks are both stronger and have
a lower rate of absorption, making them
easier to work with. Unlike concrete bricks,
clay bricks are also colourfast and will
hold their aesthetic beauty for the life of
the product.
When planning to build a sustainable home and a comfortable life, you have a lot to consider. With their complete range of cost, comfort and style benefits, clay bricks are the one and only choice.

It is our proud claim that we made “the
bricks that built Melbourne,” none more so
than the bricks that are still doing sterling
duty in our prestigious middle suburbs.
Their gentle colour variation, patches of
blue, and clean, crisp edges are typical of
Melbourne’s early 20th Century bricks.
Melbourne was originally devised for
renovations and extensions to heritage
homes, but have now also become very
popular for use in elegant, modern designs.
The Melbourne 50mm are a welcome
extension to one of our most successful
premium products. The slim profile, two-
thirds the height of a standard brick, adds
definition and visual interest. Ideal on
their own or as a highlight component in
a composite design, their ‘finely knitted’
appearance can be enhanced with
light-coloured mortar.

Blending
Our bricks are partially blended during
packing but this is not sufficient to
guarantee a well blended wall.
Blending on site is important whether
the bricks are single or multi-coloured.
Your bricklayer is a professional tradesman
and is responsible for ensuring an even
colour distribution in accordance
with the blending instructions attached
to all our brick packs.
Cleaning
Cleaning brickwork is a skilled process
that requires care and is the responsibility
of your builder. Your new brickwork
should be cleaned after each section
is laid as fresh spattered mortar is much
easier to remove.
Blending and cleaning
Bricks & mortar explainedExtruded bricks
Extruded bricks are the versatile staples
of our brick range. They are widely used
in building applications from everyday
housing to large, architect-designed
commercial projects. Their manufacturing
process makes possible a vast range of
surface finishes, from smooth to sandy,
highly textured to glazed. The colours
of extruded bricks are equally diverse,
covering the spectrum from pale off-white
and grey through traditional red to deep
tan and burgundy.
Pressed bricks
Pressed bricks are our premium products,
still made on original presses dating back
almost a century. This moulding process
gives each brick an individual character
that is highly valued by architects, builders
and home-owners. Their heritage makes
our pressed bricks the only choice for
period-style buildings but they are equally
“at home” in contemporary architecture.
Shapes
Shaped bricks take brickwork out of the
square. Their sculpted designs help create
distinctive and authentic architectural
features such as formed window sills,
moulding courses, bullnose cappings
and much more.
Mortar colour
The most common mortar colour
is mid-grey, often called “natural”.
However off-white mortar is becoming
more popular. Off-white mortar is made
by mixing light colour cement and white
sand. Mortar can be coloured, usually
by adding powdered or liquid pigments
to the mortar as it is being mixed by
the bricklayer. Mortar can also be tinted
to match the brick colour, giving a very
even wall colour.
Mortar finishes
There are four common mortar finishes.
The key to understanding mortar finishes
is sunlight. A raked finish will cause a
deep shadow to form in the mortar joint.
This brings out the horizontal lines of the
brickwork (and the vertical lines to a
lesser extent). Ironed and rolled joints also
create shadowlines, but much finer and
more subtle. A flush joint doesn’t allow
shadowlines to form, giving the wall a
more unified look. Using a mortar colour to
match the brick will take this a step further.
Mortar colour

* Colours shown are an indication only. Mortar colours will vary depending on the type of cement, sand and pigments used.

1 Estimate accurately
We will help estimate your
requirements to the next 1/4 pack
to avoid under-ordering.
2 Not so fast!
Have your product delivered to site
at least one working day before work
starts. Starting work on the delivery day
may lead to lost time due to waiting.
3 Take as many bricks as you can with each delivery
Ordering a full load ensures priority,
express delivery and allows bricklayers
and paver layers to blend from multiple
open packs.
4 Our trucks are big!
We need to know if there are any
obstacles such as a dead-end or one-
way streets, height restrictions, weight
restrictions, clearways, main roads,
proximity to schools or hospitals, etc.
5 Is the house or lot number prominent?
Place a ‘job sign’ on your front
terrace or boundary to eliminate
any confusion.
6 Site access
If the site is locked, tell us the
access times. If you require us to
enter through neighbouring land,
it is your responsibility to get prior
written permission. Provide contact
number of someone on-site.
7 Where do you want them?
Tell our sales staff where your delivery is
to be placed. We need to know before
delivery if packs are to be placed
around the site please place signs to
indicate your requirements. Our tractors
need at least 2.5 metres clear width
and 2.6 metres height clearance. Less
than 8 packs will be delivered by crane
placing on verge.
8 Bricks are heavy!
A tractor with a brick pack weighs
about five tonnes. It ’s your responsibility
to ensure the ground and any path
or driveway traversed or crossed can
sustain this weight. Stormwater pipes
are particularly vulnerable to damage.
9 Safety first... and last
Ensure children are well out of the way
and restrain your dog during delivery.
We will do our best to place packs to
your requirements but the driver has the
final say when it comes to safety and
possible site damage.
10 Talk to an Austral Bricks sales consultant about your delivery needs.
10 tips for a smooth delivery
Delivering your bricks, blocks and pavers is the exciting first step in the construction process.
We take pride in efficient and effective delivery as well as working with your builder. Here are a few simple guidelines to help us place your product where you want it, when you want it!
Choose Austral Bricks
Our clay bricks are made from naturally occurring minerals that are kiln fired to lock in their colour and strength for life. The composition of the raw materials as well as the firing process may cause each run to differ. The resulting colour variation is inherent in the process and part of the appeal of our natural products.
Hand boards
Sample boxes
To make your selection process as easy as
possible, we recommend that you view examples
from at least three of the following sources before
finalising your choice.
Brochures and website
Our brochures and website are an excellent way
to narrow your choice from the wide range of
bricks available. Please note however, that the
product images in our brochures only give a
general indication of colour for your preliminary
selection.
Hand boards
Hand boards show three brick faces – light,
average and dark – but the final blend will not be
in equal proportions of these shades. Hand boards
help you to compare products and focus your
short list.
Sample boxes
Our sample boxes contain two or three examples
of the current brick blend. Again, the final blend
will not be in equal proportions. Use these samples
to assist in coordinating colour schemes.
Display walls
Display walls show typical examples of the brick
blend, including the base colour and the proportion
of light, dark and average colours. Be aware that the
mortar colour and finish will affect your perception of
the overall wall colour.
Display homes
Display homes give an excellent understanding
of a full-scale, well-blended brick wall to help you
understand the characteristics and proportions of a
specific blend.
Recently constructed houses
Recently constructed houses give another example
of the range of colours in a particular blend. While
these must be viewed from the street, they do show
how a particular brick looks in the field. Ask for a list
of houses in your area.
For more information about choosing bricks just talk
to any of our Design Centre staff.

With a heritage reaching back to
1862, Nubrik premium-quality bricks
are still moulded the traditional way on
century-old presses. Their time-honoured
expression of authenticity and elegance is
acknowledged by architects, builders and
discerning homebuyers who also value
their rich colour blends, solidity and crisply-
defined edges.
Since 1853, Daniel Robertson has
helped build Australia with building
products that combine craftsmanship
with architectural excellence. In a world
of mass production, where qualities
are constantly compromised,
Daniel Robertson premium-quality
clay bricks are highly prized for their
unique character, earthy appeal
and individual charm.
From production facilities in Western
Australia, Victoria and the ACT, Auswest

track construction, as well as for floor joists,

time-efficient approach to cladding
commercial and upscale residential
buildings. The Terraçade™ system,
developed in Australia by Brickworks
