F6bruary M66tittg Not6s

As the new bistro section was still not finished, we had to hold the meeting in the new first floor bar area . Very comfortable especialYy after the loud piped music was turned off.

There were a few letters from Czech collectors seeking exchange partners but there were no takers amongst those present.

The Secretary announc ed that Tasmanian Breweries are introducing a new system in that they will, in general , no longer send labels to individual collectors but direct them to j oin a recognized club. Only recognized clubs will receive their labels in future. (VBLCS is listed in the Tasmanian Breweries letter. )

The catalogue of Queensland Brewery labels is coming along well, thanks to helpful information from several members , and the first section should be printe d shortly.

Jack Wilks and other liasion officers are keeping up the good work with mini - breweries and we a re getting supplies of their labels for members.

There was general discussion on kindred society news, new label issues , and changes in the New Zealand brewing scene , then the raffle was drawn and the winners were :-

1. F17 blue A.Richards 2. E85 pink M. Doulton 3. F82 pink K.Deutsher 4 . 86 orange J.Finigan

Our Soc iety has made c ontact wi th other mini-breweries, and l Kb e Js hopefully will be received shortly. I won ' t print the names of the breweries until we receive the labels. l am sure that the large majority ' of our members will understand. because un fortunately we have some maverick members who would rush ir1 and try to get them direc t and delay the clubs efforts . It HAS happened befor e , we will : try and minimise delays . On that note, most of the mi ni-breweri es want HONEY for th~ labels, which of course the club pays, ,giveaways are not common, so t o those members who insist on writing, ~hy not save yourse lf a f e w stamps.

By H.ll_~CARTER - ~ . IT'S a bit late now, bu: there must be many Melbourne male wh wished he'd been a roo mate of Peter Thompso and Brian Griffin. .'

During the past year friends or the two n · year-olds ha\'e spen many a night testing the pair's own brand ofb~er

And now Peter and Brian have come u . with what the)· claim a ·real bottler. ,

The pair han named' the malty end resul~ Wattle Lager because they wanted somethinr very Australian. ··

The "boutique beer" la the first product of the · Kiewa Brewing Co. which they claim is vr torla's only lndependen brewery. •.

Kiewa Is Aborigl : for c:lear or sweet water:

Wattle Lager Is mad_ with Victorian Alpine. water and contains ni chlorine or fluoride.

Brian said yestenillY·· "It's an up-market lager; which Is an Australian alternative to importee\· beers. · :

''It's only In 3i5 ml bot· ties because It's not the. sort of beer to be con: sumed at Bay 13. ·t

"It Is designed to be '., had with meals and goes ; well with chicken, sea· rood or lightly nnore( food." ·:

Peter said that with an alcohol level of 4.5 per . cent, Wattle Lager was. down a bit on commer-· cial beers, was lighter In, na,·or, clearer, and had a· malt taste. )

Peter does all the brewing and packaging at a small Bayswater, North factory, while Brian distributes the product they hope wiU take the Australian beer market by storm. :

About 65 licensed ' rrocers, hotels and restaurants in the Mel·~ bourne and metropoll·~ tan area han tried Ui~ lager since it hit the market four weeks ago:

The company plans to Introduce Wattle Lage( to Sydney, Brisbane and, eventually, o'•erseas. ~

The SHS on labels stand for Simpson Halligan Sands, t he label s uppliers. The batch system operates by progressively working through t he alphabet. Frankly: we have learned a lot during ' tne hectic .. years of war and so has the public; we have le~rned that the dignity Nld good taste we ' have. tned to. preserve in all our sayings and doings? has been appreciated: and the public has learned that good, wholesome beer is a drink worth a ' lonQ wait in a queue. The Russian brewing industry is the fourth largest in the world wilh some 1,000 breweries producing a staggering T2 million hectos per annum - but still unable to meet demand in a country where beer drinking is increasing rapidly; indeed some 80 new breweries have been huilr in receJZt years.
