December Meeting Notes
We had expected to be able to hold this meeting in the new bistro section, but as the alterations are extensive , this section was n ot ready fo r occupation . In addition , the saloon bar was closed due to rebuilding i n that section. Fortunately the first flo o r bar area was • u~ ailab l e tu u s a nd we had p lenty of room . /

However , Keith was able to obtain the labels from the Royal Be e r Company and in enough quantity for al l me mb e rs . These will b e distributed with the Ha r c h Newsletter.

MELBOURNE BREWING & HALTING COHPANY LIMITED 1881 - 1888
The Carlton Brewery was the forerunner Breweries. The brewery was established in over premises in Bouverie Street, formerly
of the Carlton & United 1864 when John Bellman took the North Melbo urne Brewery
conducted by Rosenberg & Co.
~ LRCA 1885
since 1858 . Bellman changed the name to the Carlton. Brewery and in 1865 sold the partnerspip to Edward Latham and G . E.Hilne. Edward Latham is regarded as the founder of the Carlton Brewery due to hi s success in establishing the brewery on a sound and progressive basis. In 1881 the Melb ou rne Brewing and Halting company Limited was formed to take over the business of the Carlton Brewery . Latham retained a large interest and continued a~ managi_ng director until hi s retirement in 1884 . ln 1888, the Helbotirne Brewing & Halting Co. Ltd . amalgamated with the West End Breweries Ltd of Albert Terry to form the Carlton & West End Breweries Limited . This n e w company was affected by the financial cr isis of the 1890·s and went into liquidation in 1895. Reconstruction o f t he c ompany resulted in the formation of the Carlton Brewery Limited, registered Harch 5th 1896. And so, for the second time, the Car lton Brewery was b o rn.
