LESSON PLAN ‘DAYS OF THE WEEK’ A. Students and Setting Students: 26 pupils of fourth grade (ages 9-10); they learn English from first grade (PEAP school). They are all Greek. Setting: Public Model Experimental primary school in the centre of Athens. English is practiced four times a week, in 45 minute lessons. The level of pupils’ English knowledge is elevated and they all participate actively in the lesson. B. Lesson Background: The lesson ‘DAYS OF THE WEEK’ is placed in a unit where students learn the days, months and seasons (early during the school year). They have already learnt ordinal numbers (1st-10th) , subjects (math, science, art, music, etc) and the simple present tense in previous lessons. Students are acquainted with the way the lessons are conducted (integration of skills) and they have already worked in pairs and groups. Furthermore, apart from the coursebook, the whiteboard and photocopies, there is use of computer (internet, power point presentations) and video projector in the classroom. C. Learning Objectives/Expected Results: By the end of the lesson students will be able to recognize and remember the days of the week, distinguish and use them in written form in order to express themselves meaningfully. All four skills will be practiced (listening, reading, speaking and writing). D. Materials and Sources: Materials Photocopies, flashcards, worksheets, computer with internet (song and power point presentation) Sources www.busyteacher.org (a_fat_cat_weekdays.ppt ) (http://busyteacher.org/6600-days-of-the-week-poster.html ) (http://busyteacher.org/12630-days-of-the-week.html ) www.youtube.com (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tx0rvuXIRg ) This is a program of the U.S. Department of State, administered by the University of Oregon. Teacher’s assessment is an integral part of the learning process in order to create an anxiety-free environment for learners. -Nonverbal responses are used.- Formative assessment: checking comprehension through concentration not on linguistic accuracy but on communicative fluency-Role-play: assessment on oral performance through cooperative learning- Peer assessment: written and oral tasks conducted in pairs-Group assessment: team assesses the members’ performance (orally)-Self assessment: through the allocation of homework, students will evaluate what they have learnt

G. Reflection:

The topic of this lesson is included in the coursebook and is important for students to learn for practical reasons. The weekdays are used in their everyday life so it is something they need to know well. The lesson was formed in such way as to be easy for students to follow and integrates all four skills: reading (power point presentation), listening (song), writing (school program) and speaking (role play). Authentic material was used (school program) and there was connection with what was previously learnt (school subjects and present simple). Furthermore pair work and group work was used to reinforce meaningful communication under the teacher’s guidance and help, whenever it was necessary.
