VFA’S MISSION AND VISION
Our mission is to empower the Vietnamese community to
succeed while bridging, preserving, and promoting cultural
heritage. We envision a society where all members of the
Vietnamese community are self-reliant, successful, and
contributing to the betterment of our world .
INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE
VFA PROGRAMS
After School Program for Youth Educational Assistance for Student Empowerment
This after school program supports middle- and high-
school students to help young people explore their
personal interests, develop their inner resources and
skills, and establish positive relationships with mentors
and role models. Students participate in a combination
of tutoring, homework help, college exploration and
preparation, field trips, cultural and enrichment
activities.
Help for parents with school-age children Parent Advocacy Program
We help parents become more involved in the education
system through home-visits, workshops, peer
discussions, and cultural activities. Topics include
positive discipline, high school graduation requirements,
the college application process, and other important
issues that parents indicate they would like to know.
96% of registered students improved in at least
one subject area by 5% or maintained a passing
percent.
96% of surveyed students said they would like to
learn more about their Vietnamese or home
culture.
ENRICH
100% of parents strongly agreed or agreed that participation in the program
was very helpful.
95% of parents surveyed increased their
involvement with their child’s education.
EMPOWER
VFA PROGRAMS
Saturday Program for Recent Arrival Students Supplemental Educational Services
VFA continues our in partnership with the Secondary
Bilingual Orientation Center to offer our weekly
Saturday program. The program helps recent-arrival
students from diverse countries increase their skills in
math and English, while understanding and appreciating
theirs and each others’ cultures.
Summer enrichment for children & youth Summer Youth Program
The Summer Youth Program is designed to build on
students’ strengths to improve their academic and life
potential. Youth engage in academic enrichment, field
trips, and recreation during a time when their parents
are typically busy with work.
The program served a total of 98
students, 68% of whom were low-
income.
ACHIEVE
Parents report that their children had
improved in match (76%), reading (66%),
writing (74%), and science (62%)
73% of children surveyed believed that
they were ready to go back to school
because of this program.
INSPIRE
VFA PROGRAMS
Service and Leadership Development VFA Service Corps
VFA Service Corps developed their leadership skills
through service, community service projects, and
through regular meetings and leadership training.
During the year, service members tutored and
mentored elementary aged children during our after
school program at New Holly.
Vietnamese Community Research Project Community Action Research and Empowerment Youth and adults work together to assess the
Vietnamese community's strengths and needs and
develop an action plan that will help advance the
Vietnamese community in Seattle.
Service Corps members recorded over 545
volunteer hours.
100% sees a connection between service-
learning and community.
SERVE
There number of Level 3 and 4
students who reported liking math
increased by 34%.
Over half of our interns believed it
was important to do well in school, up
from 22%.

CELEBRATE
Vietnamese Resource Fair The Resource Fair increases opportunities
for members of the Vietnamese American
community to learn about, and have access
to, services provided by a diverse group of
Seattle area non-profits and businesses.
Over 300 guests attended!
Te t Celebration
About 200 guests attended a community-wide celebration
in honor of Tết(Vietnamese Lunar New Year). Guests from
across the community gathered to sample delicious food,
experience cultural art and dance, participate in activities
for children and families.
OUR COMMUNITY
In 2009/2010, VFA served 398 youth, parents, and
families in the Southeast Seattle area. Through special
events and projects, VFA has reached out to an
additional 700 people.
