1. Justice MN Venkatachaliah Former Chief Justice of India
Justice M.N. Venkatachaliah entered the
general practice of law in the year 1951
at Bangalore after obtaining University
Degree in Science and Law. He was
appointed Judge of the High Court of
Karnataka in the year 1975 and later as
Judge of the Supreme Court in the year
1987. He was appointed Chief Justice of
India in February 1993 and held that
office until his retirement in October 1994.
Justice M.N. Venkatachaliah was
appointed Chairman, National Human Rights Commission in 1996 and held that office till
October 1999. He was nomination Chairman of the National Commission to review the working
of the constitution in March 2000 and the National Commission gave its report to the
Government of India in March 2002. He was conferred “Padma Vibhushan” on 26 th January
2004 by the Government of India.
Justice M.N. Venkatachaliah has been associated with a number of social, cultural, and service
organisations. He is the Founder-President of Sarvodaya International Trust. He is the Founder
Patron of the Society for Religious Harmony and Universal Peace, New Delhi. He was Tagore
Law Professor of the Calcutta University.
He was the Chairman of the committee of the Indian Council for Medical Research to draw up
‘Ethical Guidelines for bio-genetic research involving human subjects’. Justice M.N.
Venkatachaliah is the President of the Public Affairs Centre and President of the Indian Institute
of World Culture. He was formerly Chancellor of the Central University of Hyderabad. He is
currently Chancellor of Sri Sathya Sai University.
Justice M.N. Venkatachaliah is the recipient of several doctorates including from Banaras,
Bareily, Pondicherry, Manipal, Rani Chennamma, and Karnataka Law Universities. He has
many other academic distinctions and honors from several Universities and Organisations.

2. Ms. Akhila Ramesh NIVASA’s founder CEO
Mrs. Akhila Ramesh is trained as an Architect with a Masters in both
Urban Design and Project Management from NUS, Singapore.
NIVASA’s vision is for every villager in India to own his permanent
home. It is an Architectural NGO which is based out of Bangalore
and seeks to provide professional design and construction support
for rural housing and infrastructure in India’s villages as a Design
and help to Build Venture. The organization is run by a small group
of dedicated individuals.
NIVASA is the product of Akhila’s effort in bringing together her
training in Architecture and her passion for equal opportunity. She is
the recipient of Manava Seva Dharma Samvardhini Fellowship
Award 2012. As part of the organisation’s urban focus, NIVASA has been working on bettering
construction labour housing, and the Project Suitcase, a proposal for rehabilitating the urban
homeless, is a winner in the Neighbourhood Implementation Challenge 2015, Bangalore City.
NIVASA’s philosophy is “Improving the quality of lives of people in villages in a holistic manner”.
Five areas of intended Impact in villages (where Impact is the enhancement of human capability
towards self-reliance) are: Housing & Infrastructure, Health, Access to finance, Education & Skill
Development. Our direct focus is on Housing & Infrastructure. The organisation believes that
long term sustainable changes can be made to any society if a few organizations with specialist
skills in these five areas work in a non-competitive, complementary manner to bring about the
change. Their values are shaped on: Purity of Purpose; Integrity of Thought & Action; Patience
& Perseverance in Execution; The Community as the locus of Interest; and Cause is greater
than the Self
The organization works on the premise that architectural intervention in design and materials is
essential for but not affordable by the lower income group in India. NIVASA employs a People-
centered Design approach, involving the house owner in both the decision making process, and
the product. Their outlook is to analyse the climate, vernacular, local materials, needs & usage
patterns of people, to develop cost effective solutions.
NIVASA Interacts with local communities, Collaborates with the Governments, NGOs,
Corporates and Individuals, Engages the Architectural community for volunteerism, Research &
design, to Derive specific, local, & cost effective designs to help Construct houses for the Below
Poverty Line people in rural Karnataka, & later in rest of rural India. They adopt the 3H principle
in any project: Heart to Feel, Head to think, Hands to Work. This is translated into: Observe,
Interpret and Intervene.

3. Mr. Aroon Raman, CII Past Chairman – CII, Karnataka State Council Convener-CII CSR Panel
Mr. Aroon Raman has a post-graduate degree in Economics
from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and an MBA
from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, USA,
majoring in both Finance and Marketing.
He ran his own electrical insulating materials company called
Raman Boards for many years before divesting it to ABB
Switzerland in 2007. He subsequently promoted Raman
FibreScience, an R&D based manufacturing company
specializing in engineered composites. In 6 years, Raman
FibreScience developed a unique battery separator material
which it successfully took to global markets. In November
2014, Raman FibreScience was acquired by the
Hollingsworth & Vose Company, a world leader in engineered
composites for filtration and energy storage.
Mr. Raman now divides his time between business and his
other personal interests. One of them is literary; he has
contributed features to The Hindu Sunday Magazine, Outlook and Times of India regularly. His
first novel – The Shadow Throne - was published by Pan Macmillan in September 2012, and his
second book, The Treasure of Kafur, an adventure story set in Mughal India, was released in
December 2013. Both have since become national bestsellers. He is now writing his third
thriller.
Apart from writing, he advises and supports a number of non-profit initiatives and NGOs. His
other interests include tennis and trekking.
He has held several senior positions with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and was the
Chairman of CII, Karnataka State Council for 2010-11. He also serves on several corporate
boards.

4. Mrs. Aruna C. Newton Associate Vice President and Head – Global Diversity and Inclusion, Sustainability Reporting and Governance, Infosys
Aruna started her career as a Cost Accountant and worked extensively in the area of sales and marketing, before coming home to learning and development. Over the last 25+ years, she has traversed many fields gaining a rich experience and perspective across organizations, people and functions.
As Associate Vice President, she leads Infosys Diversity and Inclusion and Sustainability Reporting and Governance portfolios. A leader in Executive Council at Infosys Bangalore Development Centre, she is also Founder Mentor of Green Connect, the Infosys environmental sustainability initiative
powered by Infoscions.
She was the President of the Electronics City Industries Association (ELCIA), an industrial estate of over 180 corporations, and she continues to be engaged in security, traffic, transport, infrastructure and social programs for the estate. She now serves as the Chairperson of ELCIA Trust. She works with Bangalore City Police and the Government of Karnataka on projects concerning improvements to traffic and infrastructure and the prevention of crime in the city. In 2009, she was honored with the WILL Women’s Choice Award, a special recognition for Women in Leadership. She was also selected as The Most Happening Woman in Bangalore – 2011, by
the Women’s Guild, a forum for talented women across fields and endeavors.
Her current efforts include working with Civil Defence; Jaago Re and Jaagte Raho, Citizen Police and other projects aimed at growing the involvement of citizens in governance and actions – a key to building a vibrant democracy.
A keen sports enthusiast, Aruna has represented Karnataka in Women’s Hockey for many years including captaining the state team, school, college and university teams in a sports career spanning over 11 years. She is also an amateur athlete (marathon) and motorcyclist. She also
serves on the Board of Studies at Mount Carmel College’s Commerce Department.

5. Mr. Ayyappa Masagi Founder – Rain water concepts (I) Pvt. Ltd.
Mr. Ayyappa Masagi helps poor farmers improve their economic
condition by teaching them to take charge of their water resources.
Through his education programs, and by constructing physical
structures for water management, farmers work to reduce the impact
of droughts and secure sustainable sources of water for their regions.
All people depend on fresh water for their survival, but when water is
plentiful, it is often taken for granted. Pollution and increased
consumption have combined with inefficient practices of management
to make clean water a scarce resource in India, causing conflicts
between farmers—even between states—over the control of rivers and
aquifers.
Masagi resolves such conflicts by putting an effective and comprehensive set of water
management strategies in the hands of farmers. He trains farmers in his programs to measure
and trap rainwater, most of which now passes quickly through their land on its way to the sea.
He guides them on how to budget their water needs, equipping them to make informed
decisions about the crops they want to grow. He demonstrates effective strategies for reclaiming
wells and building water enclosures, helping neighbors work together with local materials to
keep costs low. Through his efforts farmers become self-sufficient, increasing their income and
dramatically reducing their dependence on external sources of water. They also become
advocates for strong water management policies throughout India, joining campaigns founded
by Masagi to make their voices heard.
Ayyappa Masagi grew up in a drought-prone region of Karnataka, watching his hardworking
farmer father lease lands from wealthier farmers, only for them to cancel the lease once the
lands began producing impressive yields. Determined to help, he stayed in the fields for hours,
watching his father’s traditional techniques and trying to understand the science behind them.
He went to university to become a mechanical engineer, and took a lucrative job at a large
industrial firm to support his large family and help educate his siblings. On the side, he
purchased agricultural land in 1994 and began to experiment with methods of sustainable
farming. He saved up to buy a piece of land for his father as well, freeing him to work without
the burden of exploitative leases.
Realizing the consequences of water scarcity in the drought-prone region of northern
Karnataka, Masagi began to investigate and implement techniques for the conservation of
rainwater. In 1998, he began to share his learning with other farmers, and four years later he
retired from the industrial firm to spread his ideas full time.

6. Mr. R. Basavaraju Executive Director - Grassroots Research & Advocacy Movement (GRAAM)
Mr. Basavaraju R, is a development professional and had diversified
expertise in designing & implementing projects in the Non Profit,
Government and Corporate Social Responsibility sector. He has
expertise is Strategic Planning, Developmental Research, Monitoring,
Program Evaluation and Advocacy. As Head-Projects at V-LEAD (Unit
of Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement) he conceptualized and
implemented several developmental projects related to Youth
Development, Child Rights & Education, HIV AIDS, Sanitation &
Hygiene, Women Empowerment and Capacity Development of NGOs.
He spearheaded Nodal NGO project supported by CAPART in four
districts of Karnataka. He played a key role in extending activities of
the organization to Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh states in India. His contributions was
predominant in establishing V-LEAD as a credible training institute.
Basavaraju served as a Deputy Director of State Resource Centre on Child Labour, Department
of Labour, Government of Karnataka. He developed the State Action Plan for the elimination of
child labour. State Resource Centre was established to be a nodal agency to facilitate child
labour elimination activities in collaboration with the International Labour Organization. He was
Editor-in-Chief of bi-monthly newsletter on Child Labour ‘Balavani’, established Web Based
Child Labour Tracking System and online Child Labour Complaint Registering Mechanism in the
state.
He joined his mentor Dr. R. Balasubramaniam in establishing Grassroots Research and
Advocacy Movement (GRAAM), a public policy research institute. He served as its Deputy
Director till March 2014 and he is now its Executive Director. Basavaraju has been invited by the
Cornell University’s Employment and Disability Institute, USA as a visiting fellow. He travelled
across the USA to interact with different disability organization involved in implementing shelter
homes, fighting for their rights and lobby groups doing advocacy at the national level.
Besides his responsibility as Executive Director at GRAAM, he is personally in charge of
Corporate Social Responsibility consulting, Rural Livelihood and Disability portfolios and
conducted research studies in Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states. He has
provided CSR consultation to renowned companies like Toyota, and Jockey, to name a few, in
developing their CSR strategy and plan with a systematic field study.

7. Ms. Binu Verma Co-Founder and Director of Bal Utsav
Mrs. Binu is currently COO of Bal Utsav, which works towards
moving children out of poverty by nurturing them from childhood to
livelihood through education because

She is a specialist in scaling and has extensive social and
commercial experience ranging from strategic innovation and
design, to delivery and implementation of programmes and
change. Binu’ past experience includes working with some of
India’s Top 100 companies as a Consultant, but she now
specialises in the design, implementation and scaling of long term
transformative solutions to deep-rooted social and human
challenges.
Binu has a rare combination of cross-domain and cross-regional experience across most of the
major developing regions, and experience with social change in both the non-profit and social
enterprise/business arenas. She has started, worked for and managed a number of impact
projects and organisations over the span of her career, and as a consultant, has advised the
leaders and management teams of more than 50 organisations across India and around the
world, ranging from small sized start-ups to large-scale and trans governmental organisations.
She is the Co-Founder and Director of Bal Utsav, ManyHands and FacilitatorGuide
She has also worked extensively with the Chairperson' of KSCPCR, which is a statutory body
set up under the Commissions for Protection of Child Rights Act 2005, an Act of Parliament.
The Commission has the important role of examining and reviewing safeguards meant for
protection of child rights, and recommending measures for their effective implementation.
It functions as a civil court and hears petitions pertaining to violation of child rights. It also has
the mandate of inquiring into the complaints relating to child's right to free and compulsory
education (as provisioned by The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act
2009.)
She is currently onboard of over 20 companies advising and consulting on the Prevention,
Prohibition and Redressal of the Sexual Harassment at The Workplace in cities like Bangalore,
Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Coimbatore.

8. Dr. G.N.S Reddy Founder – Akshayakalpa
Dr. G.N.S. Reddy is reversing urban migration in
India by increasing the economic opportunities for
small and medium farmers. By making organic
dairy farming a central unit of farm design, his
work creates a profitable vehicle to enable farmers
to be micro-entrepreneurs of their farms.
Dr. Reddy is creating a new model that not only
uses dairy to supplement the income of farmers
but also leverages it to create a closed loop of
inputs and outputs that add significant value to the
farming cycle. Focusing on farmers whose major
crop are small orchards (like coconuts and
mangoes), Dr. Reddy shifts their farming practices to use the free ground to grow fodder and
other crops and to introduce automated organic dairy farming. He supports farmers to invest in
cows, milking and chilling systems for the milk, a biogas plant, and a sprinkler system for the
farm. To run this technology, the cow manure is funnelled into a biogas plant that provides
electricity to the entire farm. Equipped with technology and the energy to run it, Dr. Reddy has
handed over the dairy production and manufacturing chain to the farmers and made them the
managers of operations and marketing for their farms.
By acquiring farm land and animals and experimenting with new crops and farm technology, Dr.
Reddy’s work is improving the economic situation of farmers and is thus attracting young people
back to farming. He enhances the entire process by providing support to farmers in areas such
as technical expertise, farm design, and access to finance. Further, Dr. Reddy has created a
system of farms connected to an urban hub, allowing the urban population to visit the farms,
learn about organic farming, and have direct access to the produce.
With a father in the medical field, Dr. Reddy grew up with a keen interest in improving health
through natural means. As a child, however, he always felt more drawn to animal healthcare
than human healthcare.
Dr. Reddy studied at the public school near his home, which was a daily 8 kilometre walk.
Because of the distance, his brother and sister dropped out of school, but he persevered and
finished his education. During school, Dr. Reddy was more interested in extra-curriculars than
academics and especially liked projects that involved using his hands. He led a kitchen
gardening initiative at his school and was also skilled at sketching portraits. However, Dr. Reddy
also enjoyed studying inspirational historical figures; deeply inspired by grassroots rural
development leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave. From studying their lives, Dr.
Reddy developed a passion for village reconstruction. Further, his passion and love for animals
led him to study veterinary sciences at Vijaya College, Bangalore.
During graduation, Dr. Reddy only had two cows for the students to treat, work on and learn
from, which meant there were 30 to 40 students lining up around one cow. This was never
enough so during the five years of his veterinary sciences education he never took a vacation.

Dr. Reddy stayed at school during all the holidays to be able to have the time to handle the
cows and other animals. Doing this allowed him to gain more practical, hands-on training and he
graduated with more experience than many practicing veterinary doctors.
When Dr. Reddy returned to his family and village, the stark gap in services for farmers started
made him uncomfortable. But he did not know what he could do about it. A lecture by Dr.
Manibhai Desai, a Gandhian, who took over the Ashram after Gandhi, influenced him. Dr. Desai
identified the same problem of a lack of services for farmers and found a way to address it
through his organization, Bharatiya Agro Industries Foundation (BAIF). Dr. Reddy joined Dr.
Desai and worked at BAIF for many years. By assisting BAIF’s existing animal husbandry
programs, Dr. Reddy showed significant initiative and launched innovative programs from within
BAIF on forestry, irrigation, and water shed management. The Gandhian strain of thought
remains strong in Dr. Reddy’s Akshayakalpa model, such as in local production and
sustainability, but in the most modern and automated farms.
For several years, Dr. Reddy tried initiating the spread of the Akshayakalpa model from within
BAIF, but realized that it had become too bureaucratic, and any new program required several
layers of approval, slowing down the innovation process. He founded Akshayakalpa as an
entrepreneurial endeavour in 2002.

9. Mr. S. Deenadayalan Promoter and Founder of CEO, Centre for Excellence in Organization Bangalore

Mr. Deenayalan enjoys working with “ORDINARY PEOPLE”
as he sees “EXTRA ORDINARY” talents in them. He
believes in Unlearning and not in “RESUME READING”
which is what “One is not”.
He is, the founder of CEO (“Centre for Excellence in
Organization”) based out of Bangalore and works with a team
of committed people in India. His team is extensively involved
in grass root empowerment. He also serves as Network
mentor and assists varied NGOs working for “Differently
enabled”, few Value based Educational Institutions and
Social entrepreneurship organizations.
He has developed ‘Learn, Earn and Grow (LEG Model)’ which is a new trendsetter for Industrial
relations in the modern economy. He believes in being legally questionable, morally
accountable and right “Business and Social Citizenry”.
He has reached out to over 3000 Municipal School Students who are leaders in their own right
in Leading Indian and Multi National organizations. Some of them are successful entrepreneurs
THROUGH sheer Native Intelligence and some academic rubber stamping for meeting the
needs of ORGANIZATIONAL FRAMES. Few students belonging to the age group of 35 to 40
years are today Heading HR/Supply Chain/Businesses.
Mr. Deenadayalan is trained IN SOCIO TECHNICAL systems and High Performance Work
Systems (HPWS) in Singapore, United States and Canada. Along with team, he offers
consulting for Global organizations in Countries likes US, UK, Canada, Hongkong, West Africa,
Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Dubai, Sharja and Saudi Arabia and across most
states in India.
His immersion was in Madras School of Social Work on Agrarian Relations and latter in
organizations like Mettur Beardesll, NTTF, Fenner, Titan Watches, ITC and DuPont and write
passionately on "Zeros (in today's frame) to Heroes. Academically , Gurupuja mada School ERI

10. Mr. Devendra Chowdary
Devendra Chowdary has vast experience in Sales & Marketing, HR and Learning and Development. He has
been associated with SAIL and Citibank. He has overall experience of more than 35 years.
He worked till recently as the Learning and Development
Anchor for business units at Infosys Ltd (Infosys Leadership
Institute).
Devendra has an educational background as a Postgraduate, along with a diploma in training and development. He has also undergone a four-week course on “Advanced Leadership Skills” conducted by the Haggai Leadership Institute, Hawaii, USA. Mr. Paul Meyer, the originator of self-leadership development, was on the board of directors, Haggai Institute. He has also been certified by Paul Meyer’s “Leadership Management Institute” for facilitating their workshop. Devendra is also an international speaker having visited various countries and spoken at
conferences there. He was recently interviewed by a Pulitzer Journalist for a TV channel in
Florida.
He is a visiting faculty at Haggai Institute in India and Hawaii. He taught Leadership Values at
IIM-B.

11. Mrs. Gayathri Subramaniam, IICA Convener and Chief Programme Executive National Foundation for Corporate Social Responsibility (NFCSR) Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA)
With an academic and industrial experience of more than 30
years, Gayatri has been associated with Indian Institute of
Corporate Affairs since its inception. Her main area of work
is to contribute towards policy advisory service and
undertake capacity building and knowledge dissemination
initiatives in the Corporate Social Responsibility.
She has been a part of the evolvement of the new legislation
on CSR in India representing IICA at various national
stakeholders’ consultations. She has also represented IICA
at various international forums. She is the Convener for
NFCSR - a unique platform created for Government,
Corporates and NGOs for taking up development and
sustainable initiatives at a national level.
At present, she is heading the Implementation Agencies Hub
of IICA and in her personal capacity, she is on various
advisory committees of leading Corporates and NGOs.

13. Mrs. Girija Kumarbabu, ICCW Secretary, Indian Council for Child Welfare, TN
Mrs. Girija Kumarbabu is the Secretary of Indian
Council for Child Welfare, Tamil Nadu and has over 35
years' experience in the social service sector. She
serves as a Member in Juvenile Justice Board Chennai
and is the Managing Director of Sankalp, an NGO in
Chennai that is committed to the cause of promoting
the rights of girl children. She won the Best Social
worker award 2009 from the Government of Tamil
Nadu with Chief Minister's Gold Medal and Citation.
She was also awarded the Outstanding Woman of the
year 2009-2010 by the Inner wheel club-Madras
Cosmos.

holders in the field of child welfare. She is a well-known consultant in Tamilnadu and has been
part of several studies and evaluations. She has immense experience in planning and heading
field based interventions. She was responsible for initiating an innovative multi strategy based
program at Usilampatti, Tamilnadu for the prevention of female infanticide. She headed an ILO
funded project at Srivilliputur, Tamilnadu for combating child labour and successfully main
streamed more than 3000 working children in to regular schools.
The special project for the release of bonded children from the Beedi industry in Vellore, a
unique foster parenting program involving the children who had lost their parents in Tsunami at
Cuddalore and Kanyakumari, Tamilnadu, attempting to improve access and quality of primary
education in the remote villages of Krishnagiri, Tamilnadu are some of the other projects which
she had spearheaded.
She has evolved a guidebook for grass-root level workers for training adolescent children and
has co-authored a research study on the Impact of legislation on the situation of child labour
that was sponsored by National Labour Institute. She serves as a trainer for UNICEF and trains
DTERT members on Child rights and child protection. Mrs. Girija Kumarbabu is a Social Auditor

14. Dr. Kalpana Gopalan IAS Principal Secretary to Government of Karnataka
Practitioner, policy-maker, scholar, author, advocate for social
causes and a mother, Mrs. Kalpana Gopalan wears many
hats. A serving officer of the lndian Administrative Service for
28 years, she has worked in land administration, urban
management, rural development and education, and is now
Principal Secretary to Government, Food, Civil Supplies,
Consumer Affairs & Legal Metrology Department.
Kalpana combines a unique mix of academic and practical

16. Dr. C. Kumarbabu
Professor Dr. C. Kumarbabu MD; Ph.D; DPM is an
alumnus of the Madras Medical College. After 30
years of service in the Tamil Nadu State Medical
Department he retired as Reader in Psychiatry and
has 30 years of clinical, teaching and research
experience in the field of Medicine.
He has taught postgraduate and under graduate

17. Mrs. Latha Suresh, CSIM Director, Social Audit Network, India Mrs. Latha Suresh, hailing from Chennai, started her career as an Independent Software Consultant. A brief encounter with Mr.P.N.Devarajan, Retired Group President of Reliance Industries in 2000 resulted in her foray into the Development sector. Latha is one of the founding members of Centre for Social Initiative & Management (CSIM), Chennai, spearheaded by Mr.PN Devarajan in 2001. CSIM is the first learning Centre in India to offer Social Entrepreneurship training. 18. Ms. Marie Banu, CSIM Director – CSIM, Chennai
Ms. Marie Banu is a social worker and writer. She graduated in
sociology from Stella Maris College, Chennai, and then pursued
her MBA from Indira Gandhi National Open University. She
presently serves as Director of Centre for Social Initiative and
Management (CSIM) Chennai.
A trainer in Fundraising, Media, Communication, Advocacy,
Social Entrepreneurship, Management, and Social Audit, she
also serves as a consultant for several developmental
organisations. She is a member of the Redressal Committee of a
leading educational Institution in Chennai, besides being a
member of the Internal Complaints Committee of Bosch
Electrical Drives India Private Limited.
Marie Banu started her career in the social sector when she was
25. She has worked for international as well as national developmental organizations— Danish
International Development Agency, Action Aid and Oxfam International. From 1999 to 2005, she
led the fundraising for Oxfam in India and launched several initiatives. Banu handled the
international as well as national media for Oxfam’s tsunami response program in India from
2005 to 2009 and managed the entire Oxfam International’s communication needs during this
period.
Marie Banu has written several books and research publications. In 2005, she co-authored her
first book Beyond Brick and Mortar – A Hand Book on Approaches to Permanent Shelters in
Humanitarian Response – published by Oxfam International. She has also authored several
articles for Oxfam’s Tsunami publications. She has also co-published a research document on
temporary shelters ‘Living with Hope’ which served as a strong tool for advocacy with the State
Government by the NGOs in Tamil Nadu.
In 2009, she joined Centre for Social Initiative and Management as Head – Communications.
She was instrumental in launching CSIM’s tabloid ‘Conversations’ in 2010 which was later
renamed as ‘Conversations Today’ in 2013. She is the Chief Editor for this monthly tabloid and
authors several articles for this publication besides interviewing celebrities in social work.
Marie Banu has attended the Master Class in Social Accounting and Audit conducted by Mr.
Patrick Boase and Mr. Alan Kay of Social Audit Network, UK; and been mentored by Mr. Mike
Swain of Social Audit Network, UK and Ms. Latha Suresh of Social Audit Network, India. From
2010 she has been part of several Social Audit Assignments – both corporates as well as not-

19. Mr. Mathew Thomas
Mr. Mathew Thomas is retired Army officer who is
also a Defence Missile Scientist who headed the
missiles manufacturing facilities of the Defence
Research Laboratories at Hyderabad. He saw military
action against terrorists in Nagaland in 1962 and
against the Chinese aggressors the same year. He
was in action against Pakistan in 1965. He led troops
in aid to civil power during communal riots in 1969 in
Baroda.
He received the President’s commendation for
services to Defence Research. After premature,
voluntary retirement from the Defence Services in 1981, upon temporary cancellation of the
military missiles manufacturing program, he served in the private sector and finally
superannuated in 1996 as director of a petro-chemical company. During his work career, he has
planned, designed, installed and managed software applications for solving highly complex
scientific and management problems in areas such as photo-elastic and finite element stress
analysis and production planning and control for manufacture of missiles for military and for
manufacturing steel coils in the private sector. He is thus familiar with use of technology.
He is a post-graduate in missile technology from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He
is also a post-graduate in Armament Engineering from the Army’s School at Vadodara. He
received post-graduate training abroad in manufacturing management.
He was a visiting professor of management in a Management School at Bangalore. Since
retirement he has been a social activist engaged in attempts to improve governance. He was a
director of PROOF, a NGO in the field of transparency and accountability in public finance,
founder secretary of Citizens Action Forum and now, founder and managing trustee of ‘The Fifth
Estate Trust’. He is an adviser and honorary consultant to BESCOM.

20. Mr. Murali Vullaganti, Rural Shores Founder-CEO of RuralShores
Mr. Murali is the Chief Architect and Founder-CEO of RuralShores
Business Service, a Socio-Economic initiative with a vision to setup
Rural based IT and Business Process Centers nationwide. The
objective is to create employment opportunities for rural youth while
providing cost efficiencies for the corporate world. The economic
inclusion of the rural folk prevents the migration of youth from villages

Mr. Murray Culshaw is a senior Development Consultant who
has mostly worked with the voluntary sector in India. Murray
has worked with civil society organisations—from local to
international levels—advising on management,
communications and fundraising.
Murray was responsible for Oxfam in India (1989-1994). He
was Mahiti's Board Chairperson from 2002 to 2010.
His passion for many years has been to encourage voluntary/

25. Mr. N.K. Ramakrishna Co-founder & CEO, Rang De and Habba
Mr. Ram is the co-founder of Rang De (www.rangde.org) - India’s
first non-profit, peer-to-peer micro lending platform that supports
underserved communities with access to low cost credit for
livelihoods and education. He is currently the Chief Executive
Officer and was elected to the Ashoka fellowship in 2012 in
recognition of Rang De’s game changing efforts to lower the cost of
borrowing when the focus was mostly on accessibility and not
affordability. Ram, an engineer by qualification and a software
consultant in his previous avatar strongly believes in social
business models that focus on impact maximisation. He also
believes that when people come face to face with a problem and understand its manifestations,
they are more likely to do something about it. A lot of his efforts at Rang De and in the social
space, therefore, revolve around helping create empathy. He loves to teach social

Mr. K S Ravi is a Chartered Accountant by profession being the
Managing Partner of M/s Ravi & Shrihari, Chartered Accountants,
No. 169, Sona Tapovan, 1st and 2nd Floor, 18th Cross, M C layout,
Vijayanagar, Bangalore – 560 040. He has been in practice for the
past 25 years. He is regularly engaged by several non-profits to
provide consultancy services relating to finance, in the area of rural
development and mentoring rural entrepreneurs. He has the
capacity of critically analyzing micro credit activities by virtue of his
audit and finance background. He is a regular trainer on financial,
audit and social aspects both for Governmental and Non-
Governmental organisations. He has been regularly providing
advice and consultancy services on statutory matters to companies
and institutions in the social sector for the last 25 years.
He has been instrumental in advising and nurturing producer companies with the object of
supporting farmers at the grass root level. His experiments with Sahaja Samrudha Organic

He selects students to pursue the Chartered Accountancy Course coming from rural
background and lower economic strata. His experiments in running a socially obligated office
has stood the test of time over the 25 years period and has presently a staff strength of 50 in
number. In-spite of being busily engaged in his professional endeavour, he travels into deep
and remote villages to understand the social dynamics of rural life. With this experience at his
disposal, he advices NGOs and NGO clients to have a focused approach on their objectives
and also ensuring that all the statutory requirements are meticulously catered to.
He networks with other professionals like Company Secretaries and Cost Accountants to render
services to his clients in an effective manner. In fact the above professionals are independently
practising along with him in a common office. He has been associated with CSIM for the last 3
years and students getting trained through CSIM are often helped to set-up businesses,
ventures and social outfits immediately after the training programme. Several of them have
successfully established ventures which are being supported by him as on date. It will be his
endeavour to support entrepreneurs getting trained under the CSIM banner through a hand-

Mr. Srikrishna Sridhar Murthy (Krishna) is the Founder and CEO of Sattva and is responsible for the overall growth and strategic direction of the company. Over the last few years, Krishna has been working with the senior management of leading non-profits, social enterprises, corporate and funders to make their social impact initiatives sustainable and scalable. Before starting Sattva, Krishna was a Founding Member and Partner at Longhouse Consulting, an Executive Search firm focused on the venture capital and startup ecosystem of India. 32. Dr. H. Sudarshan Founder & Honorary Secretary, Karuna Trust
Dr. Hanumappa Sudarshan (born 30 December 1950) is an Indian
social worker and tribal rights activist. He is well known for his
contributions to the upliftment of the forest dwelling tribes (mainly
Soligas) in the Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka. He is also a
recipient of the Right Livelihood Award and the Padma Shri.
Sudarshan was born in Yemalur on the outskirts of Bangalore. He
graduated from Bangalore Medical College and became a medical
doctor in the year 1973. He is also an Adjunct Professor at IGNOU.
After graduation, he joined the charitable health institutions of
Ramakrishna Mission which took him to the Himalayas of Uttar
Pradesh, Belur Math in West Bengaland Ponnampet in Karnataka as part of the job. Instead of
pursuing a medical practice in the cities, he decided to work with tribal communities and in
1980, he started the Vivekananda Girijana Kalyana Kendra for the integrated development of
the tribals in the Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka. He is also the founder and Honorary
Secretary of the Karuna Trust, which is dedicated to rural development in the states of
Karnataka and Arunachal Pradesh. He claims inspiration from the man-making and nation-
building ideals of Swami Vivekananda. He advocates Gandhian ideals for rural development
Started in the year 1986 by Dr. Sudarshan, Karuna Trust (India) is an organization involved with
integrated rural development and is affiliated to VGKK. The prevalence of leprosy in Yelandur
Taluk of Chamarajanagar district was the motivation to start this trust. Another focus area for
this trust is education and livelihood improvement. Karuna Trust runs 72 Primary Health Care
(PHC) Centres in all the districts of the state of Karnataka and Arunachal Pradesh. The
organization promotes Public Private Partnership with NGOs on a non-profit basis to achieve
primary health care
Dr. Sudarshan has held many positions in his career, prominent among them being, the chairmanship of the Task Force on Health and Family Welfare organised by Government of Karnataka, the Task Force on Public Private Partnership organised by National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) of Government of India and Institute of Health management & Research (IHMR), Bangalore. He was also associated as a member of Working Group 6 on Macro-economics & Health organised by the World Health Organization and was also a Steering Group member of the Planning Commission on the Empowerment of Scheduled Tribes in India's 11th Five Year Plan. He has also been the Vigilance Director for the Karnataka Lokayukta, an ombudsman organization. During his tenure, he adopted a method of regular visits and raids to several Government departments and earned critical acclaim for this. He was won several awards/recognitions:

Mr. Venkat has over 20+ years of experience in the
Manufacturing, IT and Development Sector, and has held
various leadership positions. He has led large global

implementations creating a positive impact for customers
worldwide.
Venkat is the co-Founder of the educational enterprise –
eVidyaloka, in 2010 a non-profit social innovation that
leverages technology to address the key social problem in
India today – Quality Education in rural India. Over the last 3 years in his role as Executive
Director, he has conceptualized and built eVidyaloka from ground zero to today reaching out to
50+ villages, impacting lives and making the dream of quality in education come true for
thousands of children in rural villages in India.
