Someday do you wake-up and think the world has gone crazy? Are you a news junkie and just keep hearing the same vicious stories about fire, murder, rape, and kidnap? Do you feel more stress today because unemploy-ment is at 9.1% and you fear you may be next to lose your job? Stop the insanity now! It is time to make the changes you need to not just survive, but thrive in the world of today. Going with the flow and being open to change is difficult if you hold fast to your-day-to-day world. It is time to relax and take care of you. If you are a caregiver, your health and well-being will affect those you take care of. Before you can take care of oth-ers, you need to care for your-self. How can you do this with the little spare time (if any) that you have? First, look at what has to be done and what can be dele-gated to another person or ac-complished at another time. Do you need to continue to spend hours watching TV, working on the computer, texting, driving from one store to another? Can you change a habit to make a better one? And, most impor-tantly are you ready for a change?

If you are ready to take a small step towards self-empowerment in your own health, here are some ideas. Turn off the news!! Yes, you will hear the most pressing stories from friends, family, and co-workers. Then, if you choose to, you can read about the particular story you are interested in. But, if you day-in-and-day-out listen to the same doom and gloom, you are brainwashing yourself to creat-ing this world for yourself. If you are prone to panic attacks or anxiety there are a number of natural ways to help return to balance. Take a number of deep breaths. You will fool your body that you are not in danger and will help stop the fight-flight syndrome. You cannot be in panic and calm at the same time. By getting more oxygen in your system you help your body to physically relax and, therefore, mentally relax as well. You are mind, body, and spirit. Each part of you affects the other. If a song or music

calms you, have it ready to go when you feel the anxiety start.

There are other simple natural techniques to calm yourself. Lavender essential oil is highly touted as a calming soothing oil to use. At bedtime, if you have

trouble sleeping, put a drop or two of lav-ender essen-tial oil in your palm. Dot the oil by your

temple (avoiding the eye area), a little under your nose, and some at the nape of your neck. For many people this helps them drift to sleep. But, you may be thinking that you are so tired that you need some extra energy. Yes, there are natural simple ways of get-ting the energy you need and the mental relaxation you desire. And, many of these methods can be taught in a very short pe-riod of time. I welcome you to contact me and to discover what may work for you. We are all in the same boat! And, we all deserve the best that life has to offer. There is magic and hope available to all. ©2010– Siobhan Hutchinson

A type of energy bodywork, reiki (pronounced ray-key) re-lies on the ancient belief in the life force energy, referred to as chi, that flows through all things. This life force runs throughout pathways in the body called meridians, nourish-ing organs and cells and sup-porting vital functions. When this energy is disrupted by nega-tive thoughts, feelings or ac-tions, illness and disease result.

A reiki practitioner's hands hover just above a person's body, sensing the affected areas and infusing them with positive flow. This raises the energetic vibration and breaks up the negativity to heal, clear and re-store the natural flow of the life force. The reiki practitioner, trained to access and serve as a channel for the life energy, places his hands on or just above the client's body and uses

effective way to improve patient care in hospi-tals and clinics across America. In an interview on the website, Dr. David Guillion, an oncolo-gist at Marin General Hospital in California, says, "I feel we need to do whatever is in our power to help the patient. We provide state of the art medicine in our office, but healing is a multidimensional process. I endorse the idea that there is a potential healing that can take place utilizing energy." and I attribute it to T'ai Chi Chih." Caudill has been practicing TCC for 13 years and became a certified in-structor in 2007. "I do have some pain, but it's so mild. It's nothing like what they told me to expect," she said. "With rheumatoid arthritis, the hands get disfigured and the joints get crooked. I don't have any of that." Caudill teaches TCC, plus mat and chair exercises at the Cypress Senior Center in San Jose. Twice a week she's at John D. Morgan Park in Campbell, where she practices TCC exclusively. Drop-ins are always welcome. "We've had people walking by and join us," Caudill said. "What it does is it gets you into a wonderful place. TCC is a moving meditation. your body when you make the moves." There are 19 stand-alone movements and one pose in TCC, whereas tradi-tional tai chi has 108 movements that are martial arts defensive moves. TCC is known as "the effort of no effort." "It's softer, not as hard on the body. You step forward and you step to the side," Caudill said. "You're really rooted into your feet. Think of a beau-tiful sunset. Everybody's moved by a beautiful sunset. Well, that's how you feel when you do T'ai Chi Chih." Caudill and other practitioners point to numerous studies that show TCC is beneficial for seniors and the elderly. ——————————————————————————

Television stations must be making a fortune from all the drug advertise-ments continually hitting the airwaves; it seems there's a new commercial promising relief from this ailment or that every day. But many people are looking for a more holistic approach to their health, which is where Maya Caudill of Campbell and Darlene Karasik of Saratoga come in. They are both T'ai Chi Chih instructors who have found relief from debilitating arthritis through the practice of this relatively new and simpler form of the ancient Chinese practice of tai chi. "I was diagnosed in the late '70s with rheumatoid arthritis," Caudill said. "The doctors told me I'd be in a wheel-chair by the time I was 60. I'm way past 60 now. I'm not in a wheelchair
