IB Testing

Testing, testing, testing! Once again the IB juniors and seniors have completed the required six exams for the IB diploma. Many of these students also took multiple AP exams. Over the course of three weeks we had 141 IB students completing their exams.

Results will be released in early July and students will be able to determine whether or not their IB diploma was awarded to them.

Students Rock the Night Away at Junior/Senior Dinner Dance

This year the year-end dinner dance and awards night was held at Green River Golf Club on Friday, May 13. Students and families gathered for a night of dinner, dancing, fun, and awards. Seniors were awarded their certificates for completion of the two-year diploma program, their IB graduation stoles, and a senior picture. The juniors received their certificate of completion for the 11th grade year and an IB back pack with some junior goodies inside.

Heartfelt thanks were expressed by the students for their teachers, the administrators, and their parents for the support and love over the years. Once again, the seniors raised their candles in a farewell salute to their high school experience as well as a toast to their future.

Cha-cha-cha-changes! A Fact of Life

We bid a fond and sad farewell to Mr. Reuben Jones, the Assistant Principal who has been in charge of IB for the last three years. Mr. Jones has worked tirelessly to try and help our IB programs grow and improve. He has accepted a position as the principal at Diamond Bar High School. Diamond Bar is also an IB school so he will be able to utilize all his IB skills in his new position. We will all miss him.

In keeping with the theme of change, Mrs. Mary Anne Rasmussen, the IB Coordinator for the last eight years, is retiring at the end of the school year. In order to bring some creative energy and new ideas to the IB program, she will be

replaced by Mrs. Jenna Rasmussen who will serve as the MYP Coordinator (9th and 10th grade students) and by Mrs. Colleen Lum who will serve as the DP Coordinator (11th and 12th grade students). Both will continue to teach in the science department as well as coordinate the IB programs.

Students or parents who have any concerns or questions about the programs may contact the coordinator who is in charge of the appropriate program.

MYP Celebration Night 2016

Wednesday, May 25, 2016, 9th and 10th grade MYP students gathered to celebrate the completion of either year 4 or year 5 in MYP. Students participated in an international buffet dinner enjoying Italian, Mexican, and Asian food. The IB Centennial boosters provided the meal and were assisted by incoming IB students from CFIS or Raney getting in some early community service hours.

After the dinner, students reported to the Performing Arts Center where they were recognized for their accomplishments. In order to receive the 9th grade certificate of accomplishment, students are required to successfully complete the El Rescate project, obtain good grades and complete 25 hours of community service. Over 110 9th grade students reached this goal.

10th grade students are required to obtain a passing grade on the personal project, get good grades and complete 30 hours of community service. Students were awarded a certificate and a pin in recognition of their

accomplishments. Over 100 10th grade students finished the year in good standing.

Proud 10th graders become IB Diploma Candidates

This year students who are choosing to move on to the diploma program were awarded a special recognition in honor of their commitment. All students present who have chosen this path received a glass globe to indicate their choice to be a world scholar, an IB Diploma candidate.

Another El Rescate Wraps Up for 2016

Once again 9th grade students completed the El Rescate project. Working in groups to complete assignments and tasks in all subject areas, students danced, went on field trips, and worked to learn interpersonal skills and strategies. It was challenging and rewarding for all the students to solve the different problems and find the best way to create the artifacts and record their progress for each group’s village.

Students learned to make fire, move water, and triage injuries. They worked together in all subject areas to finish all tasks. Students went on field trips to Dana Point, Hidden Valley Nature Preserve, and the upper field at Centennial where they spent a day rotating with their groups between stations to complete assignments. Display Day at the end of the

project saw all students producing strong displays of work and research.

Record Crowd Attends MYP Orientation Night

In April, students and parents attended the annual spring orientation night for all incoming MYP 9th grade students. Students were provided information about athletics and how to complete the Athletic Interest Form. Teachers provided information about subjects and possible summer work. Mrs. Ashley Heath, the 9th grade language arts teacher went over the summer assignment. This assignment was provided for each student in attendance. Students who missed the orientation night were able to pick up the information at the front desk at Centennial or it is also posted on the Centennial website.

The Power Point outlining the evening’s information is also posted on the Centennial

website. Students were given the opportunity to purchase used books. The summer work, The Alchemist, sold out very quickly. Students still needing a copy of the book can purchase it at any major bookstore or online. Amazon usually offers used copies at a reduced rate. The assignment will be due the first week of school.

IBSA Community Service

IBSA students once again completed a community service activity by filling approximately 100 donation bags to send to our neighbors south of the border. Mrs. Nancy Castro once again provided a connection with an organization that will make sure the bags are distributed to those in need.

Students brought in donations and then came in after school one afternoon to pack all the bags. They also helped load the bags in Mrs. Castro’s car. IBSA students voted to spend $200 to purchase additional supplies to pack in the bags. Mrs. Shah graciously went out and made these purchases to help us provide additional bags.

Ice Cream Social 2016

Incoming 9th grade students came to Centennial after school on Friday, April 15, for the annual IB ice cream social. This is an opportunity for our new students to come to Centennial and enjoy an ice cream, but also get a tour of the

campus to help them understand the layout of the campus before they arrive next August. Current 9th, 10th and 11th grade students were the tour guides.

Incoming students were encouraged to ask questions and get to know some of the Centennial IB students. The Centennial IB students were all welcome to come and have an ice cream as well. There was no shortage of tour guides for the new students. Approximately 80-100 students stopped at Centennial to participate.

IB Seniors head to College

2016 IB StudentsCollege Acceptances

Some students are listed with all colleges of acceptance. Others have chosen to only list the college where they will attend. Most of the IB students were accepted at multiple colleges. Sometimes this creates a problem as the students weigh which one they truly would like to attend. There are many factors which go into the college of choice. Students consider the programs offered, the financial aspects, the location, as well as non-academic programs when they are making their decision about which college is right for them.
