ROAR

by Kerri Zeblisky

For the past two years Susan Sandlass and I have been going once a month to NYC for a meeting with staff and members of Fountain House. ROAR is a Clubhouse movement and is not an acronym for anything. Roar is what big cats do when they want others to hear them. That's the idea behind ROAR; we want members voices to be heard in Clubhouses and in society at large.

ROAR was started in 2013 around the time the 17th International Seminar in St Louis by Alan Doyle and a member of Fountain House. They recruited Susan and she asked if any Shore House members wanted to join her I agreed to represent us.

ROAR kicked around several ideas before we settled on the choice of members voices in the Clubhouses, and in society, needed to be listened to more. We truly believe that our voices matter, not just in the Clubhouse world, but also in the world outside. We are also as much a part of society as anyone else. Many people with mental illnesses have enriched and influenced the world. We are just as important as anyone else living on this planet.

This is the responsible and considerate thing to do, especially when people have invested time and money in programs for us.

Summer Heat and Sun Risks for Antipsychotic Medication Users

Antipsychotic medications may impair the bodys ability to regulate its own temperature. During hot and humid weather, individuals taking antipsychotic medications are at risk of developing hyperthermia, or excessive body temperature, which can be fatal. Those with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes or heart and pulmonary disease are especially vulnerable.

Heat exhaustion is the most common heat-related condition, which can occur in both active and sedentary individuals. It happens suddenly and may be quite brief, however a doctor should be called. Even though recovery may be spontaneous, intravenous drugs may be necessary to prevent unconsciousness. Signs of heat exhaustion are: irritability; low temperature; profuse perspiration; rapid breathing; cold, pale skin; nausea, vomiting or dizziness, headache and weakness. In addition to calling a doctor, a person displaying these symptom should be moved to a cooler place, given water or other liquids immediately and encouraged to rest for a short period.

Heat stroke occurs mostly during heat waves. Those with chronic illnesses are most at risk. Heat stroke is very serious and can lead to death if not treated. Symptoms of heat stroke are: agitation, confusion, seizures, lethargy or coma; high body temperature of 102 degrees Fahrenheit or above; rapid pulse and heartbeat, rapid shallow breathing if an individual is moving and slow deep breathing if they are still; hot, dry, flushed skin. As soon as you recognize the signs, call 911 immediately. Loosen or remove outer layers of the persons clothing and move the individual to a cool place. Use CPR if needed. Replace fluids and sodium only under medical orders.

To keep cool and avoid heat stroke and heat exhaustion, keep windows shut and draperies, shades or blinds during the heat of the day. Open windows in the evening or night hours when the outside air is cooler. Move to cooler rooms during the heat of the day.

Standard Reading

by Kerri Zeblisky

Standard #11: Responsibility for the operation of the Clubhouse lies with the members and staff and ultimately with the Clubhouse director. Central to this responsibility is the engagement of members and staff in all aspects of Clubhouse operation.

What Standard 11 means to me Since Clubhouses are purposely understaffed, staff need the membership to pull alongside them to run Our house. Staff's job is to motivate us as members and to give us meaningful work, even if it's not glamorous tasks. This standard doesn't read that staff does all the work that members don't want to do, but to motivate us to do all aspects of our houses tasks.
