CARELETTER

JANUARY2016

From the Pastors’ Desk

Happy Epiphany! This time of year, our days are often cold, and we have more hours of darkness then we do light. Yet in the midst of such cold and darkness (and fog), we are reminded of the light of the Christ Child that came to shine in all places where feelings of coldness and darkness linger. On Epiphany (Jan. 6th), we remember when the Magi discovered the Christ child after a long search, only to go back to their parts of the world to tell all about the Christ Child whose new light had come to shine into the lives of God’s people (Matt. 2:1-12).

And as a new year has dawned upon us and we reflect on how the light of Christ has shined through us this past year and how we hope the great news of great joy of God’s love and grace will shine through us this coming year. We do this in several ways. 1. By giving thanks for God’s Word made flesh (John 1:6-14), acknowledging the promises of the resurrection and light given to us through our baptism and believing in the name of Jesus. 2. By taking time reflect how the Light of Christ shines not only in our lives as individuals, but also as the body of Christ into the lives of many others around the world. 3. By recalling our stewardship endeavors, recounting where we have let God use ourselves, our time, and our offerings (of money, possessions, and abilities) as we prepare and review annual reports. 4. By being open and looking for new opportunities for God to use us and help us live by faith and not simply by sight (2 Cor. 5:7), and using the gifts God has given us to shine God’s light into cold and dark places of our communities, our country, and our world(Matt. 5:14-16).

Jesus said, “I am the vine, and you are the branches.” So if we want to shine and be strong faithful branches we need to pay attention to where our hearts are rooted. Are our hearts rooted in God’s love and grace for us and reflected into the lives of others? Or are we sadly looking only after ourselves and what we perceive to be ours to preserve (and hoard it and hide our light) rather than sharing what God has given us with others? Oddly enough, a great way to make sure we are rooted in the right place (in Christ), is to make sure we are feeding our lives with God’s Word, love, and grace personally. We can do this by taking the time to read daily devotions and study the Word of God regularly alone, and with others. We can also do this by praying for God’s guidance and help in best using the gifts He has given each of us, including our health, our time, our possessions and our talents. And we should do this by helping others to recognize the gifts God has given them by complimenting them on their skills and helping them find their ways to use their strengths to help support the rest of the body of Christ. May God be with us in our endeavors, and as a new year has dawned upon us, may we not only hope for it to be better, but strive to make it so by feeding our roots with the love and grace of God, so we can be the best branches possible as the body of Christ alive in our communities shining and pointing to the light of Christ. Amen.-Becky Sells <><
