Course Description and Prerequisites

The faculty will strive to:1. Provide the student with a four-week long introduction to the scope and practice of Anesthesiology with emphasis

on the multiple and varied roles performed by anesthesiologists in modern medicine.2. Provide a guided study of Anesthesiology so as to enable a practical understanding of the principles of modern

anesthesia care as they relate to a variety of clinical situations.3. Provide hands-on experience in the delivery of anesthesia care along with the development of both cognitive and

procedural anesthesiology skills. This will occur through direct clinical care, guided reading, case-based discussion, simulation, lecture participation and presentation, and problem-based learning discussions.

4. Enable an understanding of the role of Anesthesiology in the systems-based practice of medicine.5. Enhance the development of professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills and facilitate problem-based

learning and improvement in the context of anesthesia care.6. Enable the student to evaluate the field of anesthesiology as a potential career choice and/or to explore anesthesia

disciplines of special interest as they relate to other fields of medicine.

Pre-Requisite: 1. Successful completion of the 12 week Surgical Clerkship or,2. Successful completion of twenty-four weeks of core Clinical Clerkship activity.

In the event of a personal illness, critical illness within your immediate family, family death, or other extenuating events; please communicate this to the program coordinator or elective director in a timely manner. TAMHSC-COM student handbook states: Students who miss more than 20% of a 4th year elective for any reason (2 weekdays during a two-week rotation or 4 weekdays for a four-week rotation) will be require a remediation plan. Elective director will consider students attendance and remediation if the student is requesting extended time off during interview season.
