GENERAL BUSINESS
1.Spring Show
Overall a successLots of orchids benched [about 230].Still too dark; need ceiling fabrics removed for next year and white table coverings to lighten the place up.People who bought raffle tickets did not understand the raffle system.Competition orchids need better labelling – not for sale. Some people wanted to buy themSome suggestions for Next Year: Slide show in background; “hire” of extra lighting? Should we return next year – yes. 1week later?
2. Christmas party To be at Casuarina Club. Should it be Friday or Saturday? AF to investigate and book
3. 400 th meeting This will be our next meeting. What should we do that is special? Where should we go? Should we have an event thewWeekend after? It could be a BBQ? Possibly at the Botanic Gardens? East Point? Nightcliff Sports Club? Or, just a normal meeting with a cake? . Much discussion. No real enthusiasm for an outdoor event [probably too hot]. Feeling of meeting was simply to have a “Social” at the next meeting with everyone to bring a plate.Sherryl Fett offered to source a cake.
4. Auction When to have this? [LOC will have theirs on 3rd Oct] MD to investigate availability Hall availability.
5. Shirts
Sizing chart now available. Cost will be $33.

Orchid Focus
1. Anthony Fuller gave a short talk based upon the displayed orchids2. A short Quiz with questions based upon Entertainment, the NT, Sport and Pastimes and the Spring
Show followed with a mixture of knowing winks coupled with blank expressions followed. The winning team, the President’s Mob, took out first place winning an orchid plant each.
The meeting closed at 9.40

Treasurers report - Raffle totals from Spring show were adjusted up. Raffle was considerably more profitable than first envisaged.- Discussed new receipt/remmitance system, current one confusing.Treasurers report - Moved Lynne Strathie, Seconded Anthony Fuller.
General businessSpring Show feedback-Need extra donation box at door to bar to pick up on club members coming through that way.-HJ suggests we buy a larger sandwich board for putting on Tambling Tce.-Much discussion on banners. Tiger Brennan Drive deemed unsuitable. Some banners no good when placed too far from road as they are small and writing small. Small directional banners/signs needed for roundabouts and fences nearby on the days of the show (e.g. Orchid Show, this way) Should we buy bigger banners? No. Next committee meeting AF will start bringing in the banners one by one and we will adjust them to be site specific.

NIGHTCLIFF ORCHID SOCIETY SPRING SHOW 2015
Nightcliff Orchid Society held its annual show at Tracy Village Sports and Social Club over the weekend of September 5th and 6th. This was the second time that the show has been held at Tracy Village and it proved even more successful than last year’s inaugural event. A great many individuals and businesses had volunteered donations of money and or goods resulting in all classes being sponsored and excellent raffles prizes.

Check-in is always an exciting time as a steady stream of often splendid orchids appear. It was particularly pleasing to note that there were 3 entries from people who had never done so before. Let’s hope that the experience proved positive so that we may see them again!By closing time at 6pm, 230 orchids had been entered and were being distributed around the hall. September is usually the time for Darwin soft canes to burst into bloom and fill the hall with colour and fragrance, but, “because they can”, they had all decided to wait for October this year, so classes were hastily rearranged to allow for a huge influx of Cattleytonias and miscellaneous species.
A selection of orchids with Broughtonia in their breeding, and hard cane Dendrobium in the background
Despite the vast numbers of Cattleytonias entered, the Champion Laeliinae Hybrid was a popular victory for one of our younger local orchid enthusiasts, and ex-president of LOC, Jenny Culgan, who rarely enters many plants and has never had a section winner, but her Cattleya Unknown over 100mm with 3 large undamaged flowers was a worthy winner.

The Champions Table
Choosing the Champion Dendrobium Hybrid was challenging as there were very nice plants displayed. However, following in Jenny’s footsteps, Nightcliff’s President, Anthony Fuller also broke his duck and had a plant judged good enough to become Champion.
Champion Hybrid Vandeae was taken out by a very well grown plant of Vandachostylis Alice’s Anie.

Anthony with his Dendrobium (Blue Sparkle x taurinum) x canaliculatum alongside our ever supportive patron. Natasha Fyles, MLA
Entries for the section Oncidiinae were down on usual but the plant that won, Tolumnia Memoria Ralph Yagi was well flowered for the Darwin region.Champion Phalaenopsis was taken out by one of our most consistent growers, Sarah Henderson with Phalaenopsis Unknown. The Miscellaneous Hybrid Section usually has a very large and varied entry but this year had comparatively few plants, almost all of them Bulbophyllum hybrids. However, our ever reliable local grower, Warren Crozier took out first place with a striking plant of Bulbophyllum makoyanum x tingabarinum .
Finding the overall Champion Species is always hard as a great many high quality plants are always competing against each other. After considerable debate, the judges eventually settled on a nicely displayed

and unblemished Phalaenopsis amabilis plant. This was a very pleasant surprise for NOS’ newest member, Ken Sellwood.
Choosing the overall winners involved even more debate but the Phalaenopsis amabilis was narrowly judged the Grand Champion, with Anthony Fuller’s Dendrobium the runner up. Much to her amazement and delight, life member of NOS, Joan Fong, took out Champion Specimen with her beautifully flowered Caulocattleya Pink Charm.
