Sandusky 2018 Neighborhood InitiativeWEST END
Summary of Community Conversation | 2 November 2016
The Sandusky Neighborhood Initiative will generate ideas for enhancing six neighborhoods in the city, with short-term investments that will coincide with the city’s bicentennial in 2018 and longer-term improvements. Planning recommendations will address
● Physical improvements, such as signage, lighting, public art, enhancements to existing parks and the possible creation of new green spaces.
● Housing concerns: including home maintenance, code enforcement, the demolition of deteriorated buildings, and possible new construction.
● Events and programs to build community connections and neighborhood identity.● Anchor projects: opportunities to build on existing anchor institutions and planned
investments.
This initial community conversation generated preliminary ideas for improving the West End neighborhood. A second meeting will take place on December 14 from 5-6:30pm at the Sandusky Central Fire Station (600 West Market Street). At this meeting, more specific ideas and alternatives will be discussed and neighborhood priorities identified, leading to a neighborhood plan that will be adopted by the city in early 2017.
What follows is a review of comments from the first community conversation and a preview of some of the ideas and images to be discussed at the upcoming meeting on December 14.
ISSUES & IDEAS1. Neighborhood concerns
● Tree trimming and road repair are major concerns, especially along Venice Rd. and Venice Heights Blvd.
● Fire Station #7 should be operating 24/7/365● GC Foundry site is an opportunity for redevelopment
2. Connections and access● The Venice Connector curve needs better lighting; left turns are dangerous; semi
Trucks go down George Street[signage and landscaping for Venice Connector]
1
[lighting for Venice Connector – night view]
● Lack of sidewalks on Venice Road are a concern. Sidewalks connecting all of West End are needed, from West Monroe to Edgewater to Venice; all of Venice to Margaritaville (at least one side of the road).
[Create map of Venice Corridor highlighting major destinations]
2
● Need for safe crossings/intersections at Tiffin, Sanford, Venice, and Route 6 overpass with possible left turn signals for traffic turning left onto Sanford off of Tiffin, or left off of Route 6 overpass onto Venice[plan view of key intersections]
3. Neighborhood development● Former Sunoco station redevelopment opportunity: the site should attract a strong
business and serve as a neighborhood gateway[Site could be redeveloped as a small grocery/farmers market]
4. Parks and green space● Lions Park breakwater/beach protection
3
● Other Lions Park improvements: electricity in shelters; shelter upgrades; more benches facing the water; more grills & tables; improved entrance to the parking lot
● Wilbert Street Park renovations● Ball park upgrades● Cold Creek access and enhancement
[More access points for fishing][Programming and access for students: possible connection from Cold Creek to Venice Heights Elementary][Stormwater infiltration][Creek restoration and pathway connections]
5. Other● Neighborhood identity (identities?): opportunities for signage and branding
