Dear Fellow Employees,
t last Fall’s Employee Town
Hall Meetings, I reviewed the
need for OHC to evaluate regional
health care organizations to
determine if there is an opportunity
to work together. As was discussed,
the new health care environment,
regulatory as well as the payment
aspects of it, is requiring more
integration between health care
providers in a region. The goals of
integration include improved quality,
access and cost efficiency.
With the above in mind,
OHC has developed Alignment or
Partnership Principles, that when
met, will result in mutual benefits for
the parties involved. The bottom line
goal of our partnering with another
entity is that OHC become a more
competitive health care provider,
from a quality and cost perspective.
During February, myself and
members of the Board of Trustees
met with the CEO’s of St. Joseph’s
Health in Syracuse, Crouse Hospital
from Syracuse and Mohawk Valley
Health System in Utica. One last
meeting is scheduled in
March with the CEO from
Bassett Healthcare
Network.
During these sessions, each
of the CEO’s described their position
in regards to partnerships/affiliations
and how OHC would be included in
their regional system. Once the last
presentation is made, the board
members will determine the next
steps. These steps include pursuing
or not pursuing a formal relationship
with one of the larger entities. This is
an important decision and significant
time and effort is being committed to
it.
I will share more information
with you as this process moves
forward.
Until then, please accept
my appreciation for all you do for
OHC and our patients. These larger
organizations are interested in
working with us because of the
quality and efficiency of care
provided by our dedicated
employees. Thank you!

Exceptional Moments
Community Partnership
Oneida Healthcare values its community
business partners. By working together we
can produce great results for population
health. Doreen Borders, Bank Officer and
Branch Manager at NBT in Oneida, delivered
a $6,200 donation to the Oneida Healthcare
Foundation on Feb. 2. We thank NBT for
their generosity. These funds will directly
support programs at Oneida Healthcare.
2016 Winter Gala Pictures
We want to thank everyone who attended the
2016 Winter Gala presented by the Oneida
Healthcare Foundation. The event could not
have been possible without our community
sponsors, generous donors, and volunteers.

gala.
Employee Retirements
Every employee is key to our success.
Without the efforts of every department, we
can’t provide exceptional care, always, to the
valued patients we serve. The following
employees are no exception. We wish them
the best in their future endeavors.
Linda Barlow, pictured top left, has been a
dedicated housekeeping aide since December
of 1982. She provided over 34 years of
service to Oneida Healthcare.
Michelle Wentworth, not pictured, has been a
registered nurse at Oneida Healthcare since
April of 1993. She provided over 23 years of
exceptional care to the patients we serve.
Jeffrey Goldberg, pictured bottom left, has
been with the Laundry Department for 5
years. Jeff maintained perfect attendance
throughout his entire employment.
A Generous Gift
In February, the students of St. Patrick’s
School in Oneida helped welcome our
newborns with 50 “welcome to the world”
bags. The bags included a toy, stuffed
animal, book, a knit hat, and more. All of the
bags were delivered by 2nd grader Olivia
Healt and St. Patrick’s School principal,
Kristin Healt. We thank the 2nd graders of
St. Patrick’s School for their donation.
in the name of patient safety. Exceptional
job, Adam! He was presented the Caring
Star by Mary McGuirl, Director of
Information Systems.

Disclaimer: Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) met overall
quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed
with input from the medical community. A Local Blue Plan
may require additional criteria for facilities located in its own
service area; for details, contact your Local Blue Plan. Blue
Distinction Centers+ (BDC+) also met cost measures that
address consumers’ need for affordable healthcare. Each
facility’s cost of care is evaluated using data from its Local
Blue Plan. Facilities in CA, ID, NY, PA, and WA may lie in
two Local Blue Plans’ areas, resulting in two evaluations for
cost of care; and their own Local Blue Plans decide whether
one or both cost of care evaluation(s) must meet BDC+
national criteria. National criteria for BDC and BDC+ are
displayed on www.bcbs.com. Individual outcomes may vary.
For details on a provider’s in-network status or your own
policy’s coverage, contact your Local Blue Plan and ask your
provider before making an appointment. Neither Blue Cross
and Blue Shield Association nor any Blue Plans are responsible
for non-covered charges or other losses or damages resulting
from Blue Distinction or other provider finder information or
care received from Blue Distinction or other providers.

several Oneida
Healthcare employees
volunteered at their
own expense to travel
with a mission team to
Nicaragua in order
to provide basic
healthcare needs to its
population. Nicaragua
is the second poorest
nation in the western hemisphere with
many families surviving on less than
one US dollar a day.
The mission team travelled to
the remote mountains of Jinotega to
set up medical clinics where they
freely gave out medicines, vitamins,
clothing, shoes, and other items to
meet basic necessities. Oneida
Healthcare participants who traveled
to Nicaragua included: Sue Secor,
RN; Rob Wright, CT, HT (ASCP);
Sue LaBarre, RN; Greg Wright, PA;
Bill Wolff, NP; Janice Bach, MD;
Larissa Kutzuba, RN; and Susan
Okey, RN.
The mission group would like
to thank the many Oneida Healthcare
employees who played an integral part
in donating, collecting, sorting, and
fundraising. Even though many could
not join the mission, their support
made a world of difference for the
children and adults living in
Nicaragua.
To find out how you can
contribute or join the mission team in
2017, please contact Sue LaBarre at
OHC Staff Provides Exceptional Care in Nicaragua
o work in healthcare you must
commit yourself to others. At
Oneida Healthcare we are proud of the
exceptional team we have and their
commitment to co-workers and
patients. Many of our employees,
however, take this commitment well
beyond the boundaries of Oneida
Healthcare.
During the month of February,
T
n an effort to help prospective
parents find hospitals that deliver
quality, affordable maternity care,
Excellus BlueCross BlueShield
announced Oneida Healthcare as one
of the first hospitals to receive the
Blue Distinction Center+ for
Maternity Care designation.
Blue Distinction Centers+ for
Maternity Care are hospitals
recognized for delivering quality,
affordable specialty care safely and
effectively, based on objective
measures developed with input from
the medical community. To receive a
Blue Distinction Centers+ for
Maternity Care designation, a hospital
must also meet requirements for cost
efficiency. The program also evaluates
hospitals on overall patient
satisfaction, including a willingness
to recommend the hospital to others.
Research shows that compared
to other facilities, those designated as
Blue Distinction Centers, demonstrate
better quality and
improved outcomes for
patients. On average,
Blue Distinction
Centers+ are also 20
percent more cost-
efficient than non-Blue
Distinction Center+
designated health care
facilities.
Oneida
Healthcare is proud to
be one of the first in the nation to
receive Excellus BlueCross Blue-
Shield’s Blue Distinction Center+ for
Maternity Care designation. We
commend our team of physicians,
physician extenders, RNs and support
staff who provide exceptional care,
always, in our Lullaby Center. The
Blue Distinction Center+ Maternity
Care designation is a symbol of their
dedication to providing patient-
centered care to the communities
we serve.

Tip of the Month
n February 24, residents from the
ECF and staff participated in
“America’s Greatest Heart Run &
Walk” at the Masonic Home in Utica.
This event is held annually to provide
an opportunity for local seniors who
reside in assisted living or skilled
nursing facilities to continue to make
an impact in their surrounding
communities.
Our ECF residents were
accompanied by staff around an
indoor track and every resident,
whether on their own or with the
assistance of staff, were able to
complete the goal of walking one
mile. ECF Administrator Bryan
Ehlinger said, “Our residents are
simply the best people you would
want to know. They are a
very determined group and
much like the staff, have a
heart of gold.”
In addition to
participating in the walk,
they also raised money for
the American Heart
Association. Together, ECF
residents and staff were
determined to raise $400 on
behalf of their Heart Run &
Walk team. Not only did
they end up meeting their goal, they
surpassed it by raising $401.67.
Oneida Healthcare
congratulates all ECF residents and
staff who participated in “America’s
Greatest Heart Run & Walk” and for
