Each Friday we build school community and inspire towards success! Another part of our morning Friday assemblies are our PBIS reminders for school expectations. Last Friday we discussed how to earn Rocket Fuels for our school store, Rocket Café. Curriculum Night was a success! Thank you to all of the families who were able to attend. This is an important part of your child’s academic success as well. If you have not signed up for parent teacher conferences please do so with the classroom teacher. As a school community we continue to focus on improving literacy skills. Unit 5 Superintendent Dr. Mark Daniel is conducting a Listening Tour , making a stop at each Unit 5 school. Parents, staff, teachers and students are invited to attend these meetings, where two essential questions will be asked: 1. What makes your school extraordinary? 2. How can we make it even better? The goal of the Listening Tour is to bring together students, parents, and staff to exchange ideas and best practices, as we work to develop our strategic plan.

Greetings from Mrs. Jensen

Each day I am impressed by the students at Cedar Ridge. Their kindness, humor and genuine spirit add so much to our school atmosphere. We celebrate their character and accomplishments during our morning Friday assemblies. Many of our late start professional development days are centered on strengthening core instruction. We dive deeper each year. All Cedar Ridge teachers are committed to student achievement. Best wishes on a successful school year!

Dr. Daniel will hosting this interactive meeting from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. at Cedar Ridge IMC on November 24th .Please don’t miss this opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas!

Attendance and Late ArrivalsIt is vitally important for the academic success of each child for the student to be on time every day. School begins at 8:45 a.m. Any child entering after this time MUST be signed in at the office by a parent/guardian. Students cannot sign themselves in. Parents need to call the attendance hotline if a student is going to be absent or tardy. Our hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (557 – 4462). If parents fail to call the hotline to report the absence we will attempt to call home as required by Illinois School Code. Any students that are not reported absent and no contact can be made, will be marked unexcused.

Thank you for your attention to this important process!

PBIS Pit StopAs you know, students are expected to be Respectful, Responsible, and Safe rockets! This month we would like to talk to you more specifically about Respect. Students demonstrate respect at school by following the directions of the teachers and other adults.  In addition, kind words and actions are also a form of respect. Students can use kind words and actions not only with adults, but also with their friends.  Students are respectful when they are good listeners.  It is important they listen with their eyes, ears, and body language.  These are all good practices to have at home too!  Together we can help our students be better, more respectful rockets!  Please talk to your rockets about the importance of respect in all of these ways and any more ideas you may have.

Library News

October in the library means the Scholastic Book Fair is coming!

The Book Fair this year will run October 18-24. This year will be special because it will be open for both the Cedar Ridge School Carnival on the 18th, and Parent Teacher Conferences on the 24th. Those two dates will provide an added opportunity for our school to raise money to buy books for our library. With District cuts the book fair provides a much needed source of income. If you would like to help with the book fair please email Mrs. Ziebart at [email protected] We are looking for help on both the 18th during the Carnival and all day on the 24th. Even 30 minutes of volunteering is appreciated!

Thank you, Mrs. Ziebart

Halloween Halloween parties and the school

parade will soon be here! A separate flyer will be sent out with

additional information. As you prepare please remember

costumes need to be school appropriate. No weapons or gore,

nothing too scary. Do not wear costumes to school but students

must be able to put them on without assistance. Looking

forward to a great day!

Bus Expectations

Please reinforce positive behavior at our bus stops. Students should keep their hands to themselves at all times and treat each other with respect. We ask that when possible parents escort and wait with their child at the bus stop. Students do need parental supervision during this unstructured time of day. Thank you for your help as we work together.

Heard It Through the Grapevine

Have you heard it through the grapevine? I’m talking about word sorts in Words Their Way, of course! Surely you’ve heard about blind sorts, speed sorts, closed sorts, and open sorts!! Your children may be babbling, “Yeah, and we play games, and we go on word hunts!” By this time you’re probably saying, “What??….This doesn’t sound like the spelling class I used to have!” You are absolutely right! It is not

the spelling class many of us knew! It’s better! This is a developmental approach to word study which means that we attempt to take your child from where he/she is and lift that knowledge of the sound,

structure, and meaning of words. Our goal is to help them learn the patterns in words in order to eventually spell and use more complex language in their reading and writing. We do this through hands-

on activities, like those crazy sorts you’re hearing about! Students manipulate cards, and while doing that we encourage them to make generalizations about the words in that sort. It’s not about

memorization, but more about understanding! The teachers at Cedar are working diligently to provide your students with small group instruction and lots of time to explore and discover all they can about those words….not just for a test on Friday, but for long term learning and growing! So, tune in! You

never know what you’ll hear through the grapevine about Words Their Way!

As we enter the influenza season, I would like to remind you of the guidelines for school attendance when students are ill. The 2014-2015 McLean County Unit District No. 5 Elementary Handbook (p. 26) outlines the times when children should not be in school. These times include when students are experiencing:

A fever within the last 24 hours Vomiting or diarrhea within the last 24 hours A frequent or disruptive cough or other sign of an acute

respiratory infection Any contagious illness such as “strep throat” that requires

antibiotic therapy. Once a student has been fever free without the use of fever-reducing medications and on antibiotics for 24 hours, he/she may return to school.

Any undiagnosed skin rash. A student with a rash may attend school upon presenting a physician’s note stating the rash is not contagious.

Pronounced lethargy or fatigue that interferes with participation in learning activities.
