Program of Study:

The program aims to introduce undergraduate students to the cultural, social, political, and economic life in the United States, and especially the Midwest. The program also aims to adopt a comparative and global approach, so that students will have the opportunity to explore and discuss similarities and differences between the United States and Japan. The program will focus on contemporary issues in the United States to familiarize students with the current environment in America, and to help students learn to communicate effectively with Americans about topics and values in the United Sates.

The program will be divided into 3 sections, each one led by a different section leader. The sections and section leaders, include:

Professor Noriko Hanabusa, Professor of Japanese in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, will also participate in some of the program’s activities. Guest lectures by other faculty may also be arranged as appropriate. Students will participate in all three sections. (see schedule)

Program Design:

Each section includes twenty contact hours directed by each section leader. The section leaders will provide readings, lectures, lead discussions, and organize guest lectures and site visits related to the section’s topics.

Services:

Airport transfers. Notre Dame will provide airport transfers for the group. It is requested that all students arrive on the same flight.

Orientation. Notre Dame will provide a campus and program orientation upon arrival.

Accommodation. The University of Notre Dame will provide students with either single or double dormitory accommodations.

ID Cards. As registered students, students will receive ID cards that will enable them to take advantage of the recreational facilities, library, etc.

Meals. Meals are included in the program cost for the duration of the program.

Visas. The University of Notre Dame will issue program acceptance letters for the purpose of processing necessary visas.

Bios of Key Faculty

Dr. Jonathan NobleAssistant Provost for Internationalization Director, Asia Office; Interim Director, Center for Asian Studies

Jonathan is Assistant Provost for Internationalization at the University of Notre Dame. His responsibilities focus on the Asian Region and include developing the University’s academic programs in Asia and Asian Studies. He coordinates the strategies for and implementation of a range of programs, including student recruitment, scholarships, study abroad and international exchange programs, faculty collaboration, and curricular development. He currently directs Notre Dame’s first office in Asia, located in Beijing, China, and he is helping to establish Notre Dame’s new Institute for Asia and Asian Studies.

Jonathan’s research focuses on contemporary Chinese culture and society. He has published fifty some articles, essays, and

translations. He has also translated the film scripts for more than twenty Chinese films, including Blind Shaft, which won the Silver Bear in the 2003 Berlin International Film Festival, and the Chinese blockbusters The Assembly and Aftershock. He was one of twenty young China scholars in the United States selected to participate in the Public Intellectuals Program (2005-2008) sponsored by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations.

Jonathan has taught courses about East Asia at the University of Notre Dame, the Ohio State University, and the College of William and Mary. Jonathan received a Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Literatures from The Ohio State University in 2003 and a B.A. in East Asian Studies from the College of William & Mary.

Jonathan, his wife Zhang Xin, and their daughter Sarah live in South Bend, Indiana and Beijing, China.

Dr. Lance R. AskildsonAssistant Provost for InternationalizationDirector of the Center for the Study of Languages & CulturesFellow, Kellogg Institute for International StudiesFellow, Nanovic Institute for European Studies

Askildson has a multiplicity of roles and responsibilities at the University of Notre Dame. He is the Assistant Provost for Internationalization and Director the Center for the Study of Languages & Cultures (CSLC) — providing strategic planning and leadership for Notre Dame’s international studies programs

and internationalization initiatives as well as support and programming for foreign/second language and service programs on and off campus. He is an associate professor who teaches coursework on applied linguistics, international studies and language education and pursues research on second language acquisition; He administers Notre Dame’s summer study abroad programs that send students to study language and participate in service learning projects at dozens of sites around the world each summer; He directs an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program and faculty that provides English language support and community engagement opportunities to Notre Dame’s international student population; He is a fellow and active member of both the Kellogg Institute for International Studies and the Nanovic Institute for European Studies; and he also serves as the Secretary to the International Association of Language Learning Technology (IALLT).

Dr. Warren vonEschenbachSenior Advisor to the Provost

Warren J. von Eschenbach is Senior Advisor to the Provost at the University of Notre Dame.

Prior to joining the Provost’s Office, von Eschenbach was a policy consultant for the Higher Education Policy Institute at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and served as Chief of Staff to the chair of the Texas Senate Committee on Higher Education. His responsibilities included developing education policies affecting statewide pre-kindergarten through higher education

programs.

While serving the Texas State Legislature, von Eschenbach held key positions including Director for the Senate Committee and Subcommittee on Higher Education, the Senate Finance Subcommittee on Higher Education, and the Senate Subcommittee on Capital Funding for Higher Education.  In these roles, he was responsible for assisting members in developing policies relating to student financial aid, formula funding, capital funding, tuition, admissions, and research support. He was selected as a 2009-10 Associate at the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education.

Prior to entering his doctoral studies, von Eschenbach conducted education policy research for the American Productivity and Quality Center in Houston. He received his PhD in philosophy from The University of Texas at Austin, specializing in Ethics and 19th- and 20th-century European philosophy, and wrote his dissertation on Nietzsche’s perspectivism and the revaluation of values. While working on his doctorate, he worked in the Office of Academic Affairs at The University of Texas System on various higher education policies, including benchmarking research activity among its component institutions.  He was awarded a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Trinity University in San Antonio, where he was a member of the varsity football team, and a master's degree in philosophy from Marquette

University in Milwaukee. He has held teaching positions at Marquette University, The University of Texas at Austin, and at St. Edward’s University.

Warren and his wife, Rachael, a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist, have two daughters and a son. 

Professor Noriko HanabusaDepartment of East Asian Languages and CulturesProfessor of the Practice/Professional Specialist

Noriko Hanabusa teaches all levels of Japanese language. Her areas of specialty is Japanese Pedagogy, and her current research interest include Content Based Instruction and Collaborative Learning. She is the author of Nakama 1 Student Activity Manual (Second Edition), which Notre Dame’s Japanese Program uses in the 1st year Japanese class. Her recent publication includes ‘Toward “Contents” in the Beginning Language Class’ Japanese as a Foreign Language Education: Multiple Perspectives by Kuroshio Publisher (May 2008). She was a recipient of the Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C. Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2009, and the Kaneb Teaching Awards in 1999 and 2005, University of Notre Dame.

She was also included in the 2010 edition of Who’s Who in America. During the summers she teaches at Hokkaido International Foundation, Princeton in Ishikawa, and Middlebury Japanese School.
