While Kevin Riggs isn't a household name, like Neil Armstrong or Yuri Gagarin, the prestige attached to being an astronaut often gives him celebrity-like status. Riggs is among the seven astronauts the Explorer X space shuttle safely brought back to Earth a week ago. Having spent nearly five straight months at the Earth Observer Space Station, he is still readjusting to everyday life. Sitting just a few feet across from me, he carefully places his cup of coffee on the table. 'Getting used to gravity on Earth isn't easy when you've been in space for a while. I keep letting go of objects in mid-air, expecting they'll just float along. It never ceases to surprise me every time they crash down.'
The weightlessness of zero gravity in space makes simple everyday tasks more complicated, as Riggs explains to me. You have to get used to strapping everything, like tools or utensils, down so they don't float away. At times, this also includes yourself, especially when sleeping. We each had our own sleeping bag that we fastened to a wall or to the floor and secured our limbs inside it so that our arms wouldn't float up while we slept.'
While at the space station, Riggs worked on a variety of scientific experiments and also performed a total of three spacewalks. 'That's the term we use whenever an astronaut has to leave the spacecraft for the purpose of an experiment, or to maintain or repair equipment and satellites,' Riggs points out. 'We train extensively beforehand in a pool, because moving in space is similar to swimming. We follow specific procedures and take all the required safety precautions. You have to enter the airlock, which consists of two doors. Once you go through the first door, you seal it shut before you open the other one, so that no air can escape the spacecraft. A space suit is crucial to protect the human body from the hostility of space. Just a few seconds without it and things are sure to get ugly.'
I can't help but ask what it's like being out alone in space. 'Well, first of all, you're not alone. You're constantly connected to the spacecraft through tethers, and can communicate with crew members all the time,' Riggs is quick to clarify. 'It's such a stunning experience that I find it difficult to put it into words. What I can say is that, personally, I have no doubt that it was worth all the years of hard work and preparation it took to get there. The first time I exited the airlock, I wanted to take everything in and soak up every little detail of the sky which was painted by the sun's rays. It was unlike anything I had seen before. The view of Earth is a spectacular sight. Imagine the most beautiful thing you've ever seen and multiply the sensation by a hundred.'
Although space exploration has come a long way, many people don't see the benefits. We live on a planet with never-ending problems, so what's the point of wasting time and money on space? I pose this question to Riggs. 'Humankind has always been curious about outer space. We are a part of it and it affects all of us. Learning about the universe and exploring it will help us broaden our horizons and we will be presented with unlimited possibilities. The first man hadn't solved all his problems in the cave but, without giving up hope, he took a risk to explore what was

outside. By doing so, he discovered how to improve his life. And coming back to the present day, without space exploration we wouldn't have discovered things like the ozone hole.' As Riggs informs me, solar panels, water-purification systems and the production of lightweight materials are just a few of the innovations that have emerged from research in the field of space exploration. 'Space exploration is necessary because of the problems on our planet,' Riggs says as we wrap up. 'Understanding space helps us better comprehend our own planet.'
