The meeting was followed by the workshop of Anne Chapman, teacher trainer of the British Council, who talked about new teaching methods of English. Her exact topic was about writing dictations, or I’d better say, how to make dictation more interesting, enjoyable and useful. First, she dictated a paragraph as an old teaching method, which was not that much interesting, but then we tried different new methods which was completely different from the old one and of course much more interesting. But the one I found more interesting consisted of two pages but one the same paragraph missing different words from each other and to complete the paragraph the students had to dictate each either through shouting or whistling to each other. That was very enjoyable, too, we all thought.

The next presenter was by Erika Sigvallius, British Council teacher trainer, who talked about new teaching methods of English, too. Her topic was very interesting, too, to use in the English classroom, especially to make the students talk, when they don’t know much about each other, and it’s interesting for them to get introduced by their friends. The activities we learned at her presentation are very useful for all the classrooms, and I’d like to tell about some of them.

1) All the students sit in the classroom making a circle, but there has to be one free chair, and the student sitting on the right of the chair says:“The seat on my left side is free and I want …… (somebody who you know) to sit here because ……”

2) All the students sit in the classroom making a circle, but there has to be one chair in the middle and a student sitting on this chair wants to change her/his place for some reasons (let’s say because the chair is broken or it smells very bad - as Erika said). So he/she says:“The students wearing jeans have to change their seats” or “The students having black/long hair have to change their seats”.

3) Make groups consisting of three students each, write a verb on the board and ask the third

student to have a look at the verb. He/she has to write the past tense of the verb on the back of the second student, and the second student has to write past participle of the verb on the back of the first student. The first student writing the present tense of the verb on the blackboard wins the game and of course his/her group wins the game.

As you see these are really good methods that are very useful to use in the classrooms, not just for fun, but also to make the students speak or revise the grammar rules and also improve their all other skills.

By Gunay MammadovaCooperation of AzETA-GB

with foreigners

As you know from the very start AzETA as a professional organization is always cooperated with foreigners. From its establishment native speakers tried to give all needed knowledge to improve AzETA’s work.

Ganja Branch also involved a lot of foreigners to AzETA-GB. They are Peace Corps Volunteers, English language Fellows, etc. They all helped to develop AzETA in Western part of Azerbaijan. Their assistance is huge and invaluable. They are always with us, and give their useful advice in our work. Native speakers usually come and give trainings to our local English teachers. They teach the new English teaching methods, and improve the teachers’ knowledge. We appreciate their collaboration with us. If they are eager to work with us it means that they do believe in future of AzETA, not only in Azerbaijan, but also abroad.

AzETA meeting in Ganja

.

So Ragsana Mammadova, AzETA president, talked about the topic and explained how to write a good project proposal. Though it took a long time, it was really interesting and very useful to listen to her and also gain such knowledge about project proposal writing. We learned all steps of project proposal writing and had a chance to practise the newly gained skills on project proposal writing and developed skeletons of some ideas giving it a shape of a project proposal.

Literary page19th century, women writers

Elizabeth Gaskel

The majority of names appearing in British literature at the turn of the 19th century weren’t just Yeats, James, Lawrence, Woolf, and Joyce, and Bronte family but also some other women writers who lived and created during the period.

Elizabeth Gaskel was one of the women writers who lived and created in the 19th century. She was born in London in 1810. Her mother, Eliza, the niece of the potter Josiah Wedgwood, died when she was a child. Her father, William Stevenson, was a Unitarian minister, and also a writer.

Much of her childhood was spent in Cheshire, where she lived with an aunt in Knutsford, a town she would later immortalise as Granford. She also spent some time in Newcastle upon Tyne and Edinburgh.

Her stepmother was a sister of the Scottish miniature artist, William John Thomson, who painted a famous portrait of Elizabeth in 1832.

In the same year, she married William Gaskel, a minister at Cross Street Unitarian Chapel who had a literary career of his own. They settled in Manchester where the industrial surroundings would offer inspiration for her novels.

The circles in which they moved included religious dissenters and social reformers, including William and Mary Howitt.

Mrs. Gaskell's first novel, Mary Barton, was published anonymously in 1848. The best-known of her remaining novels are Granford (1853), North and South (1855), and Wives and Daughters (1865). She was a friend of Charles Dickens, and wrote the first biography of Charlotte Bronte, which played a significant role in developing her fellow writer's reputation.

She died in Hampshire, England, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, aged 55.

With the help of Charles Dickens, Gaskell became popular for her writing, especially her Ghost story writing. Even though her writing conforms to Victorian Conventions (including signing her name "Mrs. Gaskell"), Gaskell usually frames her stories as critiques of Victorian era attitudes, particularly those toward women, with complex narratives and dynamic women characters

Mrs. Gaskell today ranks as one of the most highly-regarded British novelists of the Victorian era.

My breath, my soul is yours onlyMy home, my land, my country.

First created me my GodThen my motherland brought me up.

My land gave me salt and breadHow I can, my land, forget?

Land is mother for every manShe nurses each one in her bosom

Who she fosters, whom she mothersThat’s my sweetie, my precious.

I shall keep it on my eyeIf I lost land I would die

Can’t be forgotten fare of landVillains won’t be victims for land

Sonnet(William Shakespeare)

My mistress eyes are nothing like the seenCoral is far more red than her lips red If snow be white, why then her breast are deenIf hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head

* * *I have seen roses damask’d red and whiteBut no such roses see I on her cheek And in some perfumes in there more delightThan in her breathe that from my mistress reeks

* * * I love to hear her speak; yet well I knowThat music hath a far more pleasing soundI grant I never sow a goddess goMy mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground.

Azerbaijan is a Democratic Republic. Azerbaijan borders on Dagistan, Georgia, Armenia, Turkey and Iran. Azerbaijan covers a territory of 86.6 thousand square kilometers. Its population is about 7 million. The capital of Azerbaijan is Baku. Baku is situated on the shore of the Caspian Sea. Azerbaijan is one of the richest regions of the world.

It’s already 17 years that 20 percent of Azerbaijan territory has been occupied by Armenians. There are 1 million refugees and IDP-s in Azerbaijan.

On May10th, 1994 between Azerbaijan and Armenia agreement was signed about ceasing fire but Armenians still continue to fire upon regions. Nearly every day they fire at our soldiers on the front and also the innocent people, who live nearby, and kill them.

Now Azerbaijan is also an Independent country, though the way to freedom and independence was hard and bloody. January 20th, 1990 is known as “Black January”, because on this day many people of Azerbaijan were killed and many were wounded. But Azerbaijan people scarified themselves in this fight for the freedom, independence and sovereignty of our republic.

By Gulnaz AliyevaBirthdays

I think the loveliest day for a person especially for youth and the little ones is a birthday. On the day a new soul comes to the life.

And why birthday? –This day differs from the other days because on this day everybody feels the same feeling though human is reach or poor, though they differ from their religion, language, or even their racial characteristics. Because this is the day when he/she was born, opened his/her eyes to the world, to the life and to the light.

The day is usually celebrated differently by the people, some get presents,

Page 4:  · Web viewThe Gift of the Magi and Other Stories. Penguin Readers. London, Jack. The Call of the Wild. Penguin Readers. London, Jack. White Fang. Readers. Twain, Mark. Huckleberry

some spend the day with their friends, some with family, and some people spend the day alone. And yet everybody remembers the day, and feels special feelings for the time.

And I would like for people to feel the strange, special feelings, which are very good, not only on their birthdays but forever, and also remember every minute with deep and unforgettable impression, so that to say themselves “ how wonderful that I came to the world. The life is beautiful and I enjoy living my life, and … etc.”By Gunnur Suleymanova

Novruz HolidayNovruz is one of the national holidays of

Azerbaijan. Its celebration comes from an old time. The people celebrate the holiday to welcome spring. Why spring? –Because this is the day for the NEW YEAR to come with it’s green leaves, white, red and yellow flowers of the trees, on 21st March. The people get prepared month ago for the holiday. And the last month, like the four Tuesdays are special days of the holiday, and they have different names of each, -the 1st Tuesday is called fire, the 2nd Tuesday is called water, the third is land and the 4th is wind. On each Tuesday we make a bonfire and jump over the fire.

In Novruz people begin to clean houses, yards, and etc. They make national meals, sweets and grow samani, which means the revival of the life. There are lots of different kinds of Novruz traditions but I’m going to tell you about some Novruz fortune telling.1. What is going to happen to you? – If you are interested then you take three bowls on the last Tuesday and put a pen, a ring and some bread under of each bowl. Someone from your family (a mother, or a sister, etc) must change their places while you are out and when you come back into the room you need to take any of the bowls up from its place. If you find a bread it means that the year for you will be productive, if you get the pen it means that you’ll continue your studies for the year yet, and at least if you get ring it means that you’ll find your love and will get engaged or married for the year.

2. Eat an apple for the night on the last Tuesday, but alone and take out the pips of the apple, count them and put under your pillow, and then sleep without speaking to anyone. In your dream you’ll see the person you’ll get married with. 3. Put an egg and two pencils (one red and one black) together outdoor on Tuesday night and go to bed. In the morning when you wake up you’ll see a line on the egg. If the line is red the year for you will be perfect and your wishes for the year will come true, but if it’s black you can understand that there’s no need to wish of that.

I wish all of your dreams to come true and be happy and healthy as well.

Earth DayApril 22 is celebrated as the

Earth Day in all over the world. On the day all the people all over the world begin to think of our planet, the air, the water, and animals on the Earth.

The air we breathe, the soil we walk and stand on, the water we drink are all parts of the environment. All the parts of the environment are very important for the living beings in the world and so is the water.

But these days because of the dirty smoke in the air, which plants and factories send to, our planet is in danger. We all must protect the lives of the living beings such as animals and the plants world. We must keep the water clean and the air fresh. We all must try and help nature and save the planet for our future, our people and ourselves. By Vefa Meherramova

April Fools’ Day

Everybody likes the 1st of April, when people make fun on their friends, and relatives. It’s called April Fools’ Day or All Fools’ Day. If you don’t know much about this day we can tell you something and describe some of the jokes.

A many-many year ago the 25th of March was New Year’s Day, and the 1st of April was the last day of the New Year celebrations. As the weather had changed often during the day in spring and fooled the people, they began to make fun and fool their friends, too. There can be a lot of April Fools’ Day jokes. And I’d like to give some examples. It could be like:

You can say to your friend that there is a chalk on his nose when there’s no chalk on his nose. He gets deceived and touches his nose to clean the chalk, meantime you make fun of him saying “April fool”, or in some other joke you can say that somebody is waiting for him downstairs. He believes you and gets ready to go downstairs you again make fun of him saying the same words.

Usually people don’t get angry when they are made fun of on that day, for sure. But try to find a joke which would be interesting, funny, and not so bad so that not to make a person feel bad, get angry or hurt him.

And please do remember that AN APRIL FOOL is a fool for only the first of April.

We love children.

Though the State takes care of children they still have many problems in different fields. These are mainly, their social, legal, cultural, medical, educational, family, everyday

life, and other kinds of problems that even today interfere with improving the children’s prosperity and living standards.

NGO’s have a great role in solving such problems. Also the NGOs that exist in Azerbaijan, which deal with children, have great service in solving such problems. The Juvenile Youth Community “Let’s Love Children” that we organized is one of these NGOs. Though it just started its activities, it tries to solve these problems with their own internal means. The NGO “Let’s Love Children” was set up by a group of young people on 20th November 2005. The main purpose of the Community is to try to solve the problems of all children living in Azerbaijan, and present them prosperous life.

The Community works on the programs, which is connected with the problems of the children and some other fields, that interests them. The Community held the first arrangement on 20th December 2005, according these programs. The arrangement was bound up with the hemophilia children. The arrangement was held in Ganja Hospital called after Abbas Sehhet. With the presence of the doctors was held the round table talk. Except the doctors of the hospital, some representatives from the other hospitals participated in the arrangement. Doctor psychologists, doctor hemotoloque and also doctors from the other fields participated in the round table talk. In the round table talk we asked the doctors some questions about the best ways of helping the sick children.

We held a question task among the people to see how much they know of hemophilia, within certain limits of the program. The people who knew nothing about it were given the informing blanks. There were both short and exhaustive information about hemophilia in the informing blanks. We believe that at least it will play role of informing the people about hemophilia. Within certain limits of the program, we organized anonym questioning consisting of social, legal, cultural, educational, and other kinds of questions which we believe that interests the children.

By Vüsal Rehimov

17th April is a Day of Hemophilia

Today there are more than 1700 ill people with Hemophilia in Azerbaijan, though only 800 of them are in the registration in the state. Hemophilia is a heritable disease of blood illness which is defined with the insufficiency of 8-9 factors existing in the blood thickening system. The people suffering from the illness in Azerbaijan live in Buzovna and Central lowland. Furthermore there are people suffering from the illness in other regions of Azerbaijan, too. (E.g. in Baku 409, in Ganjabasar 104, in Lankaran-Masalli 55, in Sumqatit 49, in Nakhchivan 34, among the Refugees and Obligatory-emigrants there are 59 people suffering from the illness). There are 5 of each 100 people suffer from the illness in our country.

Today there exist grave matters in the sound diagnosis province of the illness of Hemophilia. So that, modern laboratory doesn’t exist in the republic, and appropriate equipment is not sufficient. Since the illness is not inspected sound it’s not possible to treat qualitative.

Page 6:  · Web viewThe Gift of the Magi and Other Stories. Penguin Readers. London, Jack. The Call of the Wild. Penguin Readers. London, Jack. White Fang. Readers. Twain, Mark. Huckleberry

In other countries the people who are ill with Hemophilia, live healthy mode of life. They are able to engage with any work, and even can go in for sports. Because the ill people are given the new discovered medicinal preparations, concentrated product which reinstate the 8th and 9th factors. It’s necessary to note that the medicinal preparations for the illness are not produced in Azerbaijan, which could be used successfully, to treat the people from the illness, and the government brings the concentrated product in limited quantity. That’s why, the people who are ill with Hemophilia, use the blood donor to live, not to be treated. But the fact is blood donor is shortcoming in Azerbaijan.

Besides, the people suffering from the illness of Hemophilia have pretty much problems in different fields.

The interrogatory conducted among 250 people by the Youth Unity “We love children”, maintains once more that, the information of the illness is pretty little among the population. 85% of the participations of the interrogatory knew absolutely nothing of the illness. It indicates that, one of the many reasons of not having the blood donor in Azerbaijan is minority of the knowledge of the illness among the population. It is gratifying condition that on the 3rd of May, 2005 was passed a law about the illness of “Hemophilia and Talassemia” heritable blood disease of the people being struck by the illness.

Besides that on the 18th of July, 2005 was affirmed the decree of the law, presented above, of the Azerbaijan Republic President.

Teaching (ELT)Let’s face it. There are reasons why people still use Bonk,

the old, reliable English text from yesteryear. That Bonk is cheap, simplistic, and somewhat academic I won’t argue with, but if I were going to teach English on a desert island for the rest of my life, I might take along some other books as well.

I find picture dictionaries particularly useful for they tap into learners’ visual learning style, giving them something along with words to make meaning. Personally, I like the Oxford Ingilisce-Azerbaycanca Sekilli Lugetim. 2000. Ayna Metbu Evi. Examples of everyday things are given in Azeri and English. A Russian/English version is also available. For more advanced learners, there are two dictionaries I know about. First is the English-Azerbaijani Dictionary. (2003). Qismet Printing House (130,000 words). Big Red, I call it. For more bangs for the buck or gusto for the qepik, try the Ingilsice-Azerbaycanca Luget. (2004). Baku: Sherq-Qerb, a more affordable alternative (80,000 words). tapes. In Baku, I can get one text, workbook, and tapes for 2.5 shirvans. Headway has around a while and has a good track record. I was using it to teach in East Germany in the late 1980s. It uses communicative methodology and contemporary culture of different English speaking cultures. Occasionally, you might find a unit about a British TV show that was popular ten years ago, something that would baffle even an expert without satellite TV. So select carefully what material you present your students to connect with their prior knowledge and experience.

American ELT grammar world. The gold standard for teaching grammar in North America and points beyond, Azar’s visual diagrams explaining things such as the difference between the simple past and present perfect are appealing. The only thing is, I don’t think Betty was a Xazar.

The Azar grammar exercises are easily adaptable to

speaking activities. Remember when doing grammar exercises, it is not just a matter of selecting a, b, c, or d (or as my students in China would say, apple, boy, cat, dog). Students need to go beyond the sentence level through practice activities in all four language skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing). I cannot stress the importance of this enough. Why is it that so often a person will come up to me, say one perfectly grammatical sentence in English, and walk away? A student might have done thousands of tricky English sentences to prepare for the university entrance exam, but what really counts “to my mind” is if one can actually carry on a conversation. The idea is that not only should students be able to select the correct answer, but they should be able to use English to express themselves.

Forum Magazine As opposed to the previous mentioned books, Forum is available through U.S. Embassies throughout the world—absolutely free!!!!! English teachers from around the world

submit articles (even you could do this) about just about every concern that an English teacher might have. Forum is locally available at your AzETA branch and from the Center for English Language Learning and International Education. You can also read twelve years of Forum online http://exchanges.state.gov/forum/ hopefully it won’t take you that long to read them all.  All of these books and many more are in the collection of the Center for English Language Learning and International Education, website http://cellie.iatp.az at the Leaders’ School 55 Israfil Mammedov St. You may check them out if you wish. By the way many of these books listed above are available in Ganja. One bookstore I like is the Kitab Klubu across from Heydar Aliyev University on Attaturk Prospecti. ReligionI’d like to tell you about

religion now. And hope it’ll be interesting and useful for you.

Religion –what you think and Imagine when you hear of the word. It’s very confusing and important subject. Because, to my opinion, no-one can live without religion in the life. There are so many different religions in the world that we have heard almost hundred times, and it is so much important as water, air, and food and even for some reasons could be more important than the enumerated factors. But sometimes some people don’t, or might be, just don’t want to understand and adopt it. I’m a Moslem, and I’m proud of my religion. It says that we must respect all the other religions of the world, and we don’t have to defect one from another.

Page 8:  · Web viewThe Gift of the Magi and Other Stories. Penguin Readers. London, Jack. The Call of the Wild. Penguin Readers. London, Jack. White Fang. Readers. Twain, Mark. Huckleberry

We are able to get in communication with our ALLAH only with the help of the religion. If you don’t respect and believe your religion it means that you are against ALLAH.

Our ALLAH sent us the greatest book of KURAN. It’s impossible to say that, it’s a simple book, but it’s collection of laws.

I can say the main thing that ALLAH is the Creator of the world, the people, and everything in the world for every living being, and of course people. I wish you trust ALLAH and never lose the sense of beliefBy Gulnar Muradova

EducationAs we all know education –future of

each creature. Today and the future of any creature depends on his/her education. The Great Azerbaijan poet Nizami Ganjavi used to say: “Strength is in science, and nobody can do superiority on the one with a great knowledge.” All of us know how much the science is important for every living being in the world.

And of course, nowadays it’s more important to know English and computer, to have knowledge of economy, agriculture industry, and science discoveries, and it’s more useful when the professional knows his/her profession up to the mark. We also have to include that there are also so many minus features in education. Some people are uncultured; they have no enough experience, though they have a high University degree, so that the youth could be able to benefit from them, but with the help of some organizations we are able to get some more knowledge, yet. We need to improve the education in our Republic, especially in the regions.

To help our country, and the education to improve and to build our government durable we have to learn our history and all the important information of the country and rely upon our best knowledge. Try and learn as much as possible.

Keep the dough a while, and the same time mince the mutton and the tomato with the grinder. Cut the scallions and the parsley into very small peaces.
