February 4, 2018 Epiphany 5WELCOME TO WORSHIPWe’re happy you’re here to worship with us! We pray that the Lord bless you through his Word this morning.

Holy Communion Today We observe the biblical practice of member communion. In Holy Communion we not only receive forgiveness from God, but we also express a oneness in faith. If you have not yet had the opportunity to learn what we believe and teach and to express your oneness with us, we would ask that you please wait to join us until you have been able to do so. We look forward to sharing this special meal with you in the future.

Restrooms – The restrooms are located out the back doors and down the second hallway to the right.

Parents, we are so glad that you have brought your little children to church this morning. If needed, there is a nursery out the back doors to the right.

We recognize that our new sanctuary is a little “echo-y” and apologize for any sound difficulties. We are working to remedy the problem.

The Church Year: The Season of EpiphanyThe word “Epiphany” comes from the Greek word for “appearance” referring to the appearance of Christ as the Savior. During this season (Jan 6 – Ash Wednesday) we consider how the “true light” was shown to be the Son of God and Savior of all (both Jews and Gentiles). Epiphany provides us with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the revealing of God’s love and light in Jesus without the worldly distractions of the holiday season. Looking ahead… January 28 – Jesus comes with authority and power over Satan February 4 – Jesus brings hope in the midst of suffering February 11 – Jesus gives a glimpse of glory to prepare us for the cross

SERVICE: IN MEMORY OF ME*

INVOCATIONP: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of

the Holy Spirit be with you.C: And also with you.

CONFESSION OF SINSP: God is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and rich in love. He does not treat

us as our sins deserve nor punish us according to our guilt. Instead he looks upon us in compassion, forgives our sin, and heals our lives. Therefore, let us confess our sins in the presence of God and one another.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

The Word†

FIRST LESSON Job 7:1-7Job underwent great suffering, losing his family and property. Even in the midst of suffering the power of the gospel is evident simply in the fact that Job continues to pray to God. He put his trust in the merciful God even with no end of his suffering in sight.

† The public reading from Scripture can be traced back to the synagogue service (Luke 4:16-21). From Apostolic times the reading of carefully chosen lessons from the Apostles and Evangelists has been the central part of Christian worship.

1“Do not mortals have hard service on earth? Are not their days like those of hired laborers?2 Like a slave longing for the evening shadows, or a hired laborer waiting to be paid,3 so I have been allotted months of futility, and nights of misery have been assigned to me.4 When I lie down I think, ‘How long before I get up?’ The night drags on, and I toss and turn until dawn.5 My body is clothed with worms and scabs, my skin is broken and festering.6 “My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and they come to an end without hope.7 Remember, O God, that my life is but a breath; my eyes will never see happiness again.

THE SECOND LESSON Romans 8:28-30God governs and uses everything in our lives (even the suffering) to accomplish his own good purpose. He calls us by his gospel, he justifies us through faith in Jesus, and promises glory now and forever through Jesus.

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

NICENE CREEDWe believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,of all that is,seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE SERMON TEXT Mark 1:29-3929As soon as they left the synagogue,

they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.

35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36

Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”

38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” 39

So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.

THE

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

‡ This ancient song joins the words of the angels who sing before the throne of God in heaven (Isaiah 6) with the shouts of the crowds as Jesus rode into Jerusalem to win our salvation (Matthew 21).

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always.C: Amen.
