I believe Batman is the ideal hero for many reasons. Batman’s real name is Bruce Wayne and he was born into a wealthy family. At a young age, his parents were killed by a criminal so Bruce decided to become the Batman in order to bring order to the crime-ridden Gotham City where he lives. Batman is undoubtedly selfless because he puts the needs of the people of Gotham before his own, even when it sometimes means at the expense of his physical and mental well-being. He is brave because it takes exceptional courage to (almost) singlehandedly go up against armed thugs every night. He is humble in that he is always capable of admitting his limitations and weaknesses. Batman is adept at studies in criminology, is a master of disguise, has an incredibly high IQ, and has trained his body to perform at peak level in various forms of self-defense, so saying he is “skilled” is an understatement. Batman is charitable in that he took in the orphan Dick Grayson as his ward (and later as his sidekick Robin) but also because as Bruce Wayne he is always giving money to charities. He is always self-doubting and aware of his shortcomings so he is not just flawed but admits it to

others and himself. He can always be counted upon to work well in a team with others such as the Justice League or his trusty butler and mentor Alfred.

The following people need to make up the following MAJOR GRADE assignments ASAP:“Concerning Hobbits” Quiz –

1)Britton 4)Claire2)Tyler 5)Chad3)Meagan

Chapter 5 Questions – 1)Brett 4)Jaylen2)Andrew 5)Shalynn3)Jonathon

You all currently have 0s in the gradebook for these assignments.

So now we’re going to play a little game of Catch-Up.

-If your name is listed above, I have copies of the work you need to make up for you ready to go. You can have 10 minutes to study first.

-If your name is NOT listed above, move on to Chapter 12 and continue reading the book.

One last thing: there WILL BE a major grade Hobbit project coming up in the near future.

Page 27: €¦ · Web viewWhat is the sentence that this person wrote down using the word “hobbit”? (Also the first sentence in the book)

The Hobbit Major ProjectThis project will be like a combination of those Edgar

Allan Poe presentations you did in the 2nd 9 weeks, the Stephen King and Ray Bradbury short story writing responses you did 2nd and 3rd 9 weeks, and the Animal Farm portfolio you did last 9 weeks. It will have several parts and some of those parts will count as a major grade. This project DOES NOT take the place of an exam --- there is still an exam at the end of the 9 weeks for those of you that are not exempt. (No I don’t know who is exempt right now.)

Part 1: After you finish the book, write a character analysis on either Bilbo, Gandalf, or Thorin. Discuss some of your favorite things that character did and said citing evidence from the book. Talk about whether your character is a static character, round character, and/or dynamic character and what makes them that. (1-page minimum)

Part 2: Smaug the dragon is the villain of this story. Dragons have been a part of mythology and literature for centuries long before this book was published. Think about another dragon in a different story you’ve read/seen and write a compare and contrast response analyzing that dragon’s similarities to and differences from Smaug. (1-page minimum)

Part 3: In Tolkien’s Middle-earth stories, there are different races of creatures that inhabit the world. Consider the major races in this novel: hobbits, dwarves, goblins, elves, and men. Write a paper in which you first briefly describe each of these groups as they are represented in this novel. Then, compare and contrast the different groups to one another. Lastly, write about which race is your favorite and why. (2-page minimum)

Part 4: In Chapter 18, Thorin says, “If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” What exactly does this quote mean? Analyze this quote and put it into your own words. Provide examples in your description of what the quote

Page 28: €¦ · Web viewWhat is the sentence that this person wrote down using the word “hobbit”? (Also the first sentence in the book)

means. (1-page minimum)Part 5: In The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien once wrote

“Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.” Analyze this quotation and talk about how it applies to The Hobbit. (1-page minimum)

Part 6: Think of a song that reminds you of something in The Hobbit. It can be something that makes you think of a certain character, a specific situation in the story, a particular location in the book, a scene in the novel, something someone says in the book, etc., etc., etc. Write out the title, the name of the artist, and the complete lyrics to the entire. Then, write a brief half-page-long analysis in which you talk about what specifically makes the song make you think of The Hobbit. Then, on Hobbit Presentation Day, you will play a portion of this song for the class and discuss your analysis of it. (Song title, artist name, lyrics, and a half-page summary)

Part 7: This next part will be the biggest single portion of the project. You will create your very own Middle-earth character. First, you will need to decide their name, race, gender, and general occupation in Middle-earth. Then you will need to decide where they live, what their family life is like, who their friends are, who their enemies are, and what they do with their time. Lastly, you will need to write about a few adventures they have gone on (think about how each chapter of The Hobbit the group would encounter a different threat or new challenge). Be as creative as possible. You are LITERALLY making a character so the more details the better. Write about THEIR WHOLE LIFE. Think of this as a miniature biography. On Presentation Day, you will present a PowerPoint in which you discuss your character and provide some images of roughly what they would look like. (Biography – 3-pages minimum. PowerPoint – 7 slides minimum.)

How I’m grading all of this: Part 1 – 10 points Part 2 – 10 points

Page 29: €¦ · Web viewWhat is the sentence that this person wrote down using the word “hobbit”? (Also the first sentence in the book)

Part 3 – 10 points Part 4 – 10 points Part 5 – 10 points Part 6 – 25 points Part 7 – 25 points (So Parts 1-5 will be HALF your grade, and Parts 6 and

7 will be the OTHER HALF of your grade.) Also your presentation will be an additional Major

grade.

So all together in the gradebook you will have:1. Hobbit Project (Parts 1-7) --- Major Grade 2. Hobbit Project (Parts 1-7) --- Major Grade 3. Presentation of Song and Character --- Major Grade

You will need to put this project in a 3 prong folder that has a title page consisting of: your name, Hobbit Project, World Literature, and my name.

Presentation Day is the LAST DAY I will accept this folder! You can turn the project in ANY TIME before then!

Presentation Day/The Due Date of this project is ________________________!
