The detective was invented by Scottish writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and appears in 4 / 14 novels and 36 / 56 short stories. The first story, A Study in Scarlet, was published in 1867 / 1887. He is still a contemporary character as the TV series ‘Sherlock’ proves it.

Holmes lives at 221B Baker Street / Butcher Street, London, with his friend Doctor Watson and his landlady, Mrs. Hudson. He is famous for his intellectual ability, his clever observation and his logical reasoning to solve

difficult / easy cases, which are in the end “Elementary my dear Watson!’. Holmes often examines footprints or fingerprints, collects cigarette ash or searches for clues with his magnifying glass / glasses. He also does a lot of food / chemistry experiments in his laboratory.

He is typically portrayed with a trench coat, a deerstalker hat, a pipe and a magnifying glass. Sherlock is rather tall and thin. His eyes are sharp and piercing and he has a thin nose. His chin / menton has the prominence which marks the man of determination.

When he wants to relax or meditate, his violin / guitar is always near him. He also likes playing cards / chess with Doctor Watson. He is often seen smoking his pipe as he walks in London parks or reads newspapers at his Club. And sometimes he can even go cycling / boxing !
