Church Strategy for 2014

“Missions is not a duty but a lifestyle”.

Our “Acts 1:8” Missions Approach

Missions at Everett Hills Baptist Church is biblically-based on Acts 1:8 where Jesus states that we are to be His witnesses “in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” How do we define those areas today?

Where is our “Jerusalem?” Maryville is our primary “Jerusalem.” It is the very area in which our church exists. We also consider Blount, Knox, and Loudon county areas as our “Jerusalem” because this is where most of us live, work, go to school, and play. Partnering with several ministries that meet the physical and spiritual needs of our “Jerusalem”, as well as doing our part to minister, is essential to the overall mission effectiveness of our church.

Where is our “Judea?” Judea was the area just outside the religious center of Jerusalem. A modern analogy would mean that our “Judea” is the related areas beyond our “Jerusalem”. Everett Hills Baptist Church considers all people, both ethnically similar inside the borders of the United States our Judea.

Where is our “Samaria?” Samaria in Jesus’ day included the ethnically mixed and diverse cultures and peoples surrounding the Jewish race. Some Samaritans had heard of or perhaps had seen Jesus. But while they had some truth, they needed the whole truth in order to know God and worship biblically. For Everett Hills Baptist Church our modern day “Samaria” would include diverse races in international locations where God’s church is already established and opposition to open proclamation of the Gospel is minimal. Our church’s mission is to serve in supporting roles to local indigenous churches and missionary personnel in these “open access” places.

Where is “the ends of the earth?” Jesus’ “Great Commission” in Matt. 28:19-20 commands us to go to “all nations,” literally all “peoples.” Paul’s heart was to go to areas where the name of Christ was not known, where he would not be building on another man’s work (Romans 15:20). He wanted to move beyond areas of success, knowing that missions meant pushing on to new fields that had yet to hear the Gospel. Today our “ends of the earth” would include some of the most remote and distant places on the planet where evangelism is forbidden or restricted, places where in many cases vocational missionaries are not allowed. “Creative-access” places are home to the most lost people who have the least chance to hear. Geographically, most of these “creative-access” countries stretch from North Africa to the Far East and is commonly referred to as the “10/40 Window” or “The Last Frontier.” Completing His task means we must engage the unreached peoples and cities in areas where there is little or no viable Christian foundation.

Jesus lived a lifestyle of missions (Matthew 9:35-37) and we believe here at Everett Hills Baptist Church that,

“Missions is not a duty but a lifestyle”.

The Biblical Basis of Our Church’s Passion for Missions and Witnessing

2 | P a g e

All mission strategies must be evaluated by the following scriptures and anything less would be a futile attempt to carry out a mission strategy that God has not ordained.

It is commanded by Jesus (Matthew 28: 18b-20, Mark 16:15)

“All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.”

“And he (Jesus) said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

Anything less than direct obedience to these commands of Jesus is living in sin and God’s blessing will not be upon us.

It is God’s strategic plan for the church (Acts 1:8b-9)

"And ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight."

Anything less than following the strategic plan of God is a futile attempt of our church to become wiser than God.

It is Holy Spirit Led (Luke 24:47-49 and Acts 1:4-9)

“And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name (Jesus) among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things.

And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high."

“And being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, it is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up: and a cloud received him out of their sight."

Anything less than following the Holy Spirit’s leadership is a powerless vain attempt by our church to accomplish a God size task.

It accomplishes God's ultimate intentions (Rev. 5:9, 7:9-10)

3 | P a g e

To complete the work of Jesus upon the cross.

"And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation."

For God to receive glory from people from every tribe and nation.

"After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; and cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb."

Anything less than helping accomplish God’s ultimate intentions is time wasted.

God wants the church to take part in Him bringing the lost to salvation (Romans 10:13-15)

"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!"

Anything less than being on missions with God and being bearers of God’s good news is disobedience.

The church was founded to strategically send out those chosen by God (Acts 13:2)

"As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them."

Anything less than worshiping and fasting in order to receive directions by the Holy Spirit shows our lack of trust in God to direct us.

“Missions is not a duty but a lifestyle”.

Additional Information: Many of the residents in Assisted Living facilities were previously involved in church, but since moving into their current facility, contact with their “home church” is often limited or non-existent. By taking our music to them, we are showing Christ’s love and giving them the opportunity to fully participate in the celebration that is occurring.

In addition to providing the audio-visual music experience, we plan on having a snack with the residents. We will take cookies, punch and have coffee for them, showing them that they are still loved and appreciated for their service to our Savior. For those interested in in-depth help, we would schedule sessions in 4-week intervals using volunteer teachers. Within our church we have a few people who can assist; however, as the program grows, there would be a need to recruit volunteers to do the teaching. Our overall goal is to help the children learn the importance of using their talents to honor Christ. Since most of the children wanting help might not be able to afford music to sing, it would be the church’s job of selecting and providing music.

Cost: $200.00 is needed to purchase a limited amount of equipment and supplies. (The other uses that these funds could provide would be for establishing a contractual arrangement with a website where good Christian music can be downloaded to meet individual needs. To make the program successful, I would suggest that we establish a monitoring

30 | P a g e

system which allows the children who pursue the goal of developing skills to have a reward system – a “Musical Stars” treat that gives them a treat for spending time learning their music, practicing, showing up for appointments on time, showing respect for their teachers, etc. Also, it would be nice to have to a limited amount of resources that could be used for a “Volunteer Music Teacher Appreciation” meal or similar event to recognize and show thanks for helping us.

Greetings from Chisinau (KEE-shee-noh),

As we pass between Thanksgiving and the Christmas season, we want to express our special gratitude for those of you who are able to participate in the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for international missions, 100% of which goes directly to support IMB missionaries and their work. Because of the support we receive through the Lottie Moon offering, we are able to live and work in Moldova, where the Lord has called us, without having to worry about trying to raise support on our own. Because of this special offering, we are able to repair and maintain our IMB-owned house, a place where we can not only rest and be refreshed, pray and plan and manage administrative details, but a place where we can host many 47 | P a g e

different groups....students, national co-workers, disciples, friends and sometimes even American volunteers, over 130 different persons in 2013, many of them several times. Because of the Lottie Moon Offering, we have the use of a car that enables us to travel to villages where we can work alongside Moldovan church planter missionaries. Lottie Moon also provides the maintenance and the fuel for that car. Through Lottie Moon we have been able to provide special Christmas and Easter events for school children in villages without evangelical churches. These events give a chance for the Gospel to be shared and for relationships to be developed. Through the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering we are able to provide training events for Moldovans who are being prepared to go on short-term mission projects and to promote missions awareness through monthly prayer bulletins distributed to the Moldovan Baptist churches. Thank you so much for your participation in this vital support which serves to transform lives within and beyond Moldova!

Budget Goal: $1,327.00 Special Offering and Total Goal: 11,000.00

Their members are dedicated to saving the lost through personal witnessing and the distribution of God's Word in more than 190 countries around the world.

The majority of Gideons live and serve in their local communities, making us very effective and efficient because . . .

They know the local language and customs.

They know where the hotels, schools, prisons, hospitals and other locations where Bibles and New Testaments need to be distributed are located. Sometimes, we're able to establish local groups of Gideons in countries where traditional missionaries aren't allowed to go

Important Note: Additionally, the Gideons Card Program offers the opportunity for church members to make donations to their ministry. Cards are found in the vestibule and free of charge.

Overall Goals of Church by the End of 2014.

49 | P a g e

2013 was an incredible year for our church. Many victories God accomplished. It was exciting to see how God wants to use us. I believe in 2014 we are going to witness more powerful things that God wants to accomplish through our church at Everett Hills. We truly want to see Everett Hills Baptist Church be a beacon set upon a hill that changes lives positively for the glory of God in our families, neighborhoods, nation, and world. I would like to see in a few years that we have become so passionate about missions that we will have people sent out from this church to every continent of this world.

As your Pastor we will not go through the everyday routine of church. We will be strong and courageous and chart the course that God wants us on, to radically make a difference in our world. Let’s pray without ceasing for God to be with us, to guide us, and strengthen us to accomplish his Great Commission. Let us pray for God to increase our fellowship with more people who do not want to settle for ordinary Christianity, but want to be truly involved with a church that make a difference. Pastor Doug Hayes
