Luigi Denza (1846 - 1922)Born in Castellammare di Stabia (NA), Denza studied at San Pietro a Majella Conservatory in Naples with Maestros Mercadante and Serrao. He wrote melodramas and romances, but his fame is particularly linked to the famous Neapolitan song Funiculì Funiculà, , performed in 1880 in the lobby of Stabia Hotel. The song became wordly famous and is still one of the emblems of the city of Naples, of its desire to live in memory of a great past.In 1879 Denza moved to London and became co-director and later teacher of canto at the Royal Academy of Music.
