VIKING- as tough as the name suggests

In the late 1950`s Hägglunds started work ona hydraulic motor for the Hägglunds ship crane.It had to be tough, hardworking and reliable.When the motor was ready for production a fewyears later the name came naturally: VIKING.

Since then the Viking has been fitted into manythousands of deck cranes on board ships sailing onthe seven seas. Working in tropical heat and arcticcold. Day after day, year after year. But the Vikingmotor can be found in many other areas as well.In the marine and offshore industry, for sure, butalso in the chemical industry, mining, pulp andpaper, and other industrial applications.

The Viking motor is a high-torque low speed motor which can be mounted directly on a winch drum or to a shaft without the need of a gearbox.This presents many practical benefits which appeal

to the users of the equipment. The mechanicalefficiency as well as its starting efficiency is 97 %,this makes it ideal for tension control applicationswith winches. Because of the extremely lowmoment of inertia the motor is highly responsiveand insensitive to shock loads.

The Viking motor can drive and brake in bothdirections with variable speed by smoothly control-ling the flow of oil in the circuit. It is designed tobe highly resistant to severe working conditionsand environments. The Viking motor has provenitself on board ships, in underwater applications,in explosive and chemically corrosive industrialenvironments, in extreme heat and freezing cold.

This is how it worksA complete drive system fromHägglunds comprises the drivemotor with mounting accesso-ries, a control system, a power

unit with electric motor, oiltank, pump, oil conditioningand instrumentation.

The pump is driven by theelectric motor at constant speed.The oil flow to the drive motorfrom the axial piston pump iscontrolled electronically. Takingthe pump swash-plate overcentrechanges the direction of thedrive.

The oil pressure forces thepistons radially outwards againstthe cam ring, creating the torquewhich is proportional to the

pressure applied. The motorcylinder block directly coupledto the shaft rotates the machineand the body is held by a torquearm or bracket.

The speed of the drive isdirectly related to the flow fromthe pump. Therefore, the power,speed and torque are easilycontrolled. This hydraulic closedloop system provides a highlydynamic four quadrant drivewith driving and braking inforward and reverse.

The motor and the pump havea very low moment of inertia,which makes it possible to stopor reverse quickly. The extreme-ly fast pump pressure controlremoves unwanted transientsof stresses and strains on themachine.
