Spring testing will soon be upon us. Here are a few frequently asked questions and answers regarding testing.

What are the Florida Standards and Florida Standards Assessments? The Florida Standards are the content standards that identify the expectations for what students enrolled in Florida schools need to know and be able to do. All Florida schools teach the Florida Standards. The assessments provide parents and families, teachers, policy makers, and the general public with information regarding how well students are learning the Florida Standards.

What assessments are administered? Ninth and tenth grade students will be assessed in English Language Arts (reading and writing). Students enrolled in the following courses will take the state end-of-course exam for each class: Biology, U.S. History, Geometry, and Algebra 1. When will my student take the assessments? ELA Writing – Grade 9: April 1 and 2

Grade 10: April 3 and 4 ELA Reading – Grade 9: May 1-6

Grade 10: May 8-13 Geometry – May 10-17 Algebra 1 – May 16-21 U.S. History – May 22 Biology – May 23-24

How can I support my student? Parents and families can promote student success by staying involved in their student’s education, offering positive support and feedback, and encouraging their child to relax, come to school well-rested, and do his or her very best. By staying connected with their student’s school and teachers and taking advantage of online resources, such as school websites and portals, parents and families can stay informed and be equipped to meet the needs of their student at home.

For more information concerning state assessments, please visit http://www.fldoe.org/accountability/assessments/.

50th Anniversary Coins Fort Walton Beach High School has Commemorative Challenge Coins with our Signature 50th Anniversary logo for sale. The cost is $10.00 and they will be available in the Front Office beginning Monday, March 25. Office hours are 7:00am to 2:30pm.

Junior-Senior Prom 2019 Contact: L. Hanneken (850-833-3300 ext. 14137 or [email protected]) Prom is April 6, 2019 from 8pm – 11pm at the Hurlburt Soundside Club. This year’s theme is The Golden Hour. Dress is formal. Students will not be admitted to the Prom if not appropriately dressed. Tickets will be on sale during lunch, Tuesday, March 26 – Wednesday, April 3.

Page 4: Viking Voice - OKALOOSA SCHOOLS › ... › VikingVoiceMar-29-2019.pdf · Viking Voice Weekly Newsletter Fort Walton Beach High School March 29, 2019 John Spolski, Principal 400 Hollywood

Tickets will be $30.00 each for juniors and their guests. Seniors will receive one complimentary ticket and will be required to purchase a ticket for their date if the student is not a senior at FWBHS. Seniors will still need to pick up a complimentary ticket during their lunch March 26–April 3. Absolutely NO tickets can be purchased or picked up after lunch on April 3rd. Because this is on an Air Force base, we will have to have a list of everyone that will be attending by April 3rd, at lunchtime. If you are using a driver (limo, parents, etc), we will need that name when you purchase your ticket. Everyone will need a photo ID to access base. If one of our students wants to bring a date who does not attend our school, the date must be old enough to attend high school, but not older than 20 and must be approved by the Administration. If the date lives out of Okaloosa County, our student must pick up a form and get it to the date’s school and ask that school to fax it back to us. Forms will be available in Attendance beginning Monday, February 25. We must have the form back by 2:15pm on Monday, April 1, in order to approve the date attending the Prom. Approval is NOT automatic. Poor choices are never a good idea. Remember, Prom 2019 is on federal property and bad choices will become a big deal. Consequences will be out of our hands.

Need a Prom Dress? Are you in need of a dress for prom? We can help. We have dresses that you can have or use for this special event. If you are in need of a dress, see Dr. Dugan or Ms. Evans or Ms. Lemasters in the Guidance Office, or Mrs. Whittaker in room 819 to see if we have a dress that you could use.

April – Month of the Military Child Contact: M. Bates, Military and Family Life Counselor (850-833-3300 or [email protected])

APRIL MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD

Fort Walton Beach High School joins the Department of Defense and the military community in celebrating April as the Month of the Military Child. Established in 1986, it helps highlight the important role military children play in the Armed Forces community. "Purple Up" is an established theme, because it combines all the military branch colors. As a way of support, we invite everyone to wear the color purple on during the month of April. Whether it is a Temporary Duty, Forward Deployment, Permanent Change of Station (PCS) or other, our Military Family Life Counselor (CYB-MFLC) is here to support our military students and families through transitions and adjustments uniquely associated with military life. Did you know that there is a CYB-MFLC at Fort Walton Beach High School? The CYB-MFLC needs a signed informed consent to meet and talk with the children. The consent form can be picked up at the front office, or directly at the Military Counselor room 311 or call the CYB-MFLC at 850-417-5251 to meet in person. Please support our children as they support their family members who serve. Purple up everyone!

It’s Time to Party Like It’s 1985! The Wedding Singer is taking the stage!

It’s the season for love and The Wedding Singer will have you laughing all the way down the aisle! Based on the 1998 Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore film, The Wedding Singer celebrates the fun, fashion, music, hair and pop culture of the 1980s. This highly acclaimed musical comedy received five Tony Award nominations including “Best Musical,” eight Drama Desk Award nominations and was called “The most ingenious and amusing musical of a Hollywood film ever” by the Wall Street Journal. Wannabe rock star Robbie Hart (Darby Ellis) and his bandmates Sammy (Patrick Wilcox) and George (Thomas Tona) are the hottest wedding band in town. He’s the life of the party until his own fiancée Linda (Baillie Jones) leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie gives up on everything despite the encouragement of his spunky and funky grandma Rosie (Zoe Thomas). Enter Julia, (Deven Welborn) a banquet waitress who dreams of her own happily after ever but worries that her wealthy Wall-Street finance Glenn (Cole Farrah) will never pop the question. Her social- climbing mother (Carson Klaus) encourages her to do whatever it takes to snag him, but her party-girl cousin Holly (Lexi Larkin) notices the sparks that fly whenever Robby and Julia are together. In the end, it takes a village in Vegas full of celebrity impersonators to bring the two of them together to discover that they were meant to be each other’s happily ever after. Advance tickets are $10 and are available from the school office 7:00am-2:00pm, Monday through Friday, and from cast members. Tickets the day of the show are $15 at the door. Although children under three are free, this production is rated PG-13 for language and sexual innuendo so parental discretion is advised. All students at FWBHS in every course will be required to take a second semester teacher-created exam at the conclusion of the second semester unless the enrolled course has a high-stakes exam associated with it (see these courses listed below). If a student receives 5 or less excuses absences and 0 unexcused absences in a class, that student may choose to take an early exam and be excused from school exam week. Because seniors already take their exams early, they will be exempt from this policy in the second semester. High-stakes Exam courses (students will not take a teacher-created 2nd semester exam in these courses): English 1; English 2; Algebra 1; Geometry; Biology; US History; All AP courses: All AICE courses; STEMM or other courses with certifications

Educational Travel Opportunity

2020 Galapagos Islands Trip Contact: T. Marez (850-833-3300 ext. 14275 or [email protected]) I am excited to announce that I will lead a group of Fort Walton Beach High School students on a WorldStrides program to Galapagos Islands. On this once-in-a-lifetime adventure, students will explore one of the most bio-diverse areas of the world. They'll experience incomparable learning moments while gaining a new appreciation and love for science. This will be a trip that your child will be talking about for years to come! Your child will return home excited to tell you about:

Visiting Mitad de Mundo, and stand on the middle of the world! Seeing the Giant Tortoise and learn why Darwin found these amazing

land creatures so amazing Snorkeling at Concha Perla and coming face to face with playful sea lions

and the Galapagos Penguin Hiking the Sierra Negra Volcano and learning how to properly identify

volcanic rock

I have chosen to travel with WorldStrides because of their exceptional service, their 50 years of experience, their safety record, and their preventive measures that ensure learning occurs in a safe and fun environment. I will chaperone the program with other teachers as needed, and throughout the program our group will be guided by a WorldStrides-certified Course Leader 24 hours a day. Since this is not a school sponsored trip, we will not be attending as representatives or employees of the school. Please read the information below, check out the sample itinerary and visit www.worldstrides.com/signup for more details about WorldStrides and our group's trip. If you have any questions, you can contact me at (850)833-3300, or via [email protected].
