Music News from Elementary II
Villa Montessori School 1
Letter from
Head of School
Dear Parents, I hope everyone’s NEW YEAR is off to a good start. May it be filled with love, hap-piness and good health. Speaking of good health, I have been hearing reports on the news about the spread of the flu. Of primary concern is the spread of the H1N1 virus as well as other strands that require our reporting to the County Health Department. In response to this, we have modified our Absentee Line to request specific information as to the na-ture of your child’s absence so that we will have the necessary information should we need to contact them. When calling the absentee line, please indicate the reason for your child’s absence in-cluding whether or not they have been diagnosed with a contagious illness. The more information we have, the better job we can do to control the spread of cer-tain illnesses here at school. Stay well! Margo O’Neill Head of School

Our E2 students have been really enjoy-ing band this year. They are able to try their hand at a number of instruments: recorders, guitars, keyboards, an accor-dion, xylophones, and now violins! Villa has just purchased 5 violins and 2 violas to use in band. The one violin that we had was eagerly used by many students and now we can have 8 students play-ing strings at once! E2 band has proved to be a great ex-perience for both beginners and those who are already in lessons. The begin-ners get hands on experience and the musicians among us enjoy playing for their friends and letting their dedication to their instrument be an example to others. In other music news: Don’t forget choir! E1 choir is Wednesdays at 7:45 am and E2 choir is Tuesdays at 8 am. Save the date for our concert the evening of May 15th.

You can give them to businesses you patron-ize. Extra forms are in the offices at Main, Pre-primary and both Middle School campuses. Call Sue on her cell phone: (602) 363-5006 if you have any questions or want to volunteer.

New Focus on Teaching Self- Regulation Skills In Early Childhood…
and Beyond
• What is Self-Regulation? Self regulation is pretty synonymous with self-control but with some added depth and breadth. It includes self-efficacy, responsibility & accountability, moderat-ing behavior, maintaining balance both within and without, responding appropri-ately, being proactive vs. reactive, and a combination of self-confidence and em-powerment.. In a nutshell, self-regulation is learning to regulate one’s own physical, emotional, and cognitive processes in healthy, pro-active ways in order to be successful across several do-mains of life. It is critical for both suc-cess and happiness. 80 To read more from Early Childhood Di-rector, Mary Orlando, please click here.

Heroic Journey Personal Challenges During the Heroic Journey year, middle school students take on a significant chal-lenge to work on through the year. They are either trying to overcome something, learn something new, working to improve the world in some way, to improve their skills, or developing a talent. Here is a highlight of a few of those projects that our Middle School students are working on:
Plastic Bag Collection: Kate Hubbard has chosen to collect plastic bags for recycling from February 15 through March 15 on each campus and will be giving a presentation to E-1 & E-2 students to kick off the drive and increase their awareness.
Singing in the Rain: Mairead Kelly, She’s is working on a fund-raiser for children in an orphanage called Esperanza Para Los Ninos in Rocky Point, Mexico. Her goal is to raise over $1,000. She’s arranged for Harkins Theaters at Tempe Mar-ketplace and Slices Pizza to help with this on Feb 6th. See offices for flyer!

Students volunteer with P.F. Chang’s Rock N’ Roll Marathon
The Middle School is excited to announce that we have the opportunity to assist with the P. F. Chang Rock and Roll AZ Mara-thon benefitting the Leukemia and Lym-phoma Society and St. Jude Children’s Re-search Hospital. On Wednesday, January 15th we will be spending the day helping to fill the thousands of “swag bags” that are handed out to runner participants in the marathon events. Students and parents from both campuses will meet together to accomplish this monumental task. This is a great chance for us to give back to our com-munity and get some public recognition for our school. It is also a great chance for the middle school students to meet a portion of the goal of ten community service hours for their Heroic Journey this year. We love showcasing the wonderful students that at-tend our middle school and their very sup-portive parents. Also, be on the lookout for our Magazine Drive fundraiser later this month!
Other interesting Personal Challenges from both Oak and Weldon campuses include: • Several significant physical challenges such as training for and competing in a marathon • One student is learning another language and attempting to be conversational by the end of March
2014 • One student is learning French cooking and will present the fruits of his labors to his family and
teachers • One student is studying and practicing many of the world’s major religions in order to learn about
herself and the human family • One student is creating a 15-minute animated video and presenting it to peers • Other students are learning to play new musical instruments and will perform for peers, possibly at
an upcoming Café Villa on March 28th

These monies go directly toward the salaries of our wonderful teaching assistants and all specials. The State of Arizona does not fully compensate us for these salaries. All donors (Friends of Villa) are listed on separate pages.
The following families were each responsible for

I also want to thank all of the wonderful parents who volunteered to be the Tax Credit Coordinator for their child’s room. Your time spent on this campaign was appreciated by everyone at Villa. Golden Gator Award given to Middle School Teachers
This year, Villa Montessori had two teachers awarded the Xavier Col-lege Preparatory Golden Gator Award for Excellence in Teaching. Each year, Xavier College Prepara-tory recognizes middle school teach-ers who have guided students onto a path of success during their tran-sition to high school. This August, each member of the class of 2017 was given the opportunity to nomi-nate one 7th or 8th grade teacher who had inspired her and signifi-cantly helped her along her aca-demic route. The two teachers recognized with this outstanding award are Ms. An-gie Gosnell and Ms. Jannett Oglesby. We are thankful for these educators and are proud to have some of the best teachers guiding our children to a path of success. Congratulations Angie and Jannett!

ADVERTISEMENTS:
Last spring the Elementary II campus on Cheryl Drive had to pack up and prepare for a move down to the new campus. In an attempt to be resourceful, we planned to make the move by ourselves using our own vehicles and man-power…As the date got closer, we re-alized how HUGE this undertaking would be. Shortly there after, we realized we bit off more than we could chew. We heard that Two Men and a Truck was qualified and inexpen-sive; so, with our limited budget we called upon them for a quote. They were not only able to fit within our budget, but they donated used boxes to help us pack up. Pinning down the moving date was tricky and we changed it several times. The owner was flexible and ac-commodating. When we were finally ready, they came to the Cheryl site on time, bright and early with teams of guys that efficiently moved our classrooms. They even accommo-dated all of our “special instructions” to be gentle with our precious Montessori materials. Overall, the experience with Two Men and a Truck was incredibly positive with all of our things landing safely in their new home.
Thank you Two Men and a Truck!

Helping Families Save on the Cost of College!
The Head includes: • Taking the right courses, being challenged while keeping grades up because GPA and class rank
matter;
• Standardized test scores. These are HUGE and if the student isn't putting extra effort into this area, they are leaving money on the table. One point difference in the ACT can make the differ-ence of thousands of dollars. Great test scores provide more opportunities, choices and cost sav-ings.
We help families create optimal approaches to paying for their child’s college education.
College planning starts early & requires a balance of: The Head (academics) The Heart (school fit) The Hand (financials)
