NEW VILLAGER

New Starflix Cinema offers highbrow entertainment

Starfl ix goes beyond the average in serving

‘cinéastes’ by connecting fi lm makers with

audiences. A good example is the exclusive

screening of ‘Viva Riva!’, winner of an

MTV Movie Award for best picture. Starfl ix

fl ew in the fi lm’s producer for the sneak

preview, giving audiences a chance to

interact with the genius behind the movie.

Coming soon

‘Kenyans for Kenyan Films’ is a new

initiative by Starfl ix Cinemas that will see

the screening of groundbreaking domestic

movies as part of a programme supporting

African fi lms. This will form part of the

regularly scheduled programme that

includes French and European fi lms.

As part of its future plans, Starfl ix will

undergo a major revamp that will see

cutting-edge digital 3D systems installed

along with new seating and a wider

variety of concessions including healthy

and organic choices in conjunction with

fellow Village Market tenants such as

Revive Juice Bar.

Any fi rst-timers at Starfl ix can look

forward to fantastic fi lms, friendly faces

and fun times.

The Starfl ix Village Market

opened its doors to cinema-

goers in September 2011 as the

fi rst step in Hub Entertainment’s goal

of revitalising cinema in Kenya.

According to Starfl ix management,

the move was prompted by the level

of sophistication among domestic and

expatriate residents in surrounding

neighbourhoods and the venue’s

proximity to the diplomatic zone.

In addition to Hollywood blockbusters,

Starfl ix actively acquires and exhibits art

house and foreign language fi lms, giving

cinema enthusiasts a much richer variety

of movies to explore.

NEW VILLAGER

Imperial Bank opens branch at The Village Market

Imperial Bank recently opened a branch

at The Village Market – the bank’s 17th

branch – bringing its premium customer

service closer to Village Market customers.

In keeping with this tradition, the bank will

offer its Village Market customers competitive

foreign exchange rates, money transfer

services, internet and mobile banking among

other banking services.

MDG award

Imperial Bank recently won recognition for its

contribution towards reducing child mortality –

Millennium Development Goal No 4 – through

the ‘Key In Your Donation’ ATM fund-raising

campaign. This is one of eight international

development goals which all 193 United Nations

member states, and at least 23 international

organisations, have agreed to achieve by 2015.

Goal No 4 sets out to reduce the under-five child

mortality rate by two-thirds.

The award, which was presented to Imperial Bank

by the MDG Trust Fund in collaboration with the

Ministry of Planning, National Development and

Vision 2030, UNDP, the Finish Embassy and other

partners, acknowledged the bank’s creativity and

innovation in accelerating the achievement of MDG

No 4. This has been achieved through advocacy and

fund-raising using technology, media, customers,

staff and the public.

The Village Market branch of Imperial Bank is

open on weekdays from 10 am to 5 pm and on

Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm.

At only 33 years of age, Chef

Luca Alvarez Molteni has

opened 32 restaurants around

the world.

If you work out the maths, as we did, it

is easy to assume that Chef Luca must

have begun his career at the age of two.

Of course, that isn’t possible and neither

is it true. Yet, the good chef admits that

he was “born inside the kitchen”, tracing

his family’s history in the business four

generations back.

At the age of 16, Chef Luca left home

to begin his career in Germany. He later

progressed to France, Spain, the Caribbean,

Hong Kong and many other places until he

arrived for the first time in Kenya.

His passion for cooking translates into

an art or what he likes to define as the

“design of tastes”. While other chefs

may be satisfied with knowing how to

prepare one or two signature meals

which they are comfortable making,

Chef Luca keeps redefining himself – the

very reason that he accepted the African

culinary challenge presented by the job

offer at Tribe Hotel.

But before he could open his 32nd

restaurant, Jiko at Tribe Hotel, Chef Luca

had to study Kenya’s culinary culture for

a whole year.

“I had to start from zero,” he recounts.

“I had to experience the Kenyan menu,

see how the meals are prepared and find

out what they taste like.”

is grown and livestock reared before it is

prepared and presented as a meal. While

comparing the African way with other

cultures he has interacted with in the

past, he notes:

“Unlike the Asian food culture, where

taste and aroma are key elements in the

preparation of food, Africa’s culinary

culture has been, for a long time, about

filling the belly.”

African menu

Chef Luca’s objective is to develop the

African menu, while still using local

ingredients, to ensure it is appreciated

internationally.

In this regard, the opening of Jiko came

with Chef Luca’s instructions. To achieve

his success, he took steps to ensure

that the cattle for his choice beef were

reared according to his specifications.

He also found a supplier for the organic

vegetables he uses in his meals and

another to deliver fish fresh from Lake

Victoria by 10 am each morning. Chef

Luca is so thorough in his work that he

even has a salt menu.

Away from the heat of his kitchen, Chef

Luca likes to spend his days off at home

with his wife, who is also a chef at Tribe.

“I found a home in Kenya, somewhere in

the middle of nowhere, and I really like

it,” he says of his new place. “I think I

might just stick around.”

The inspiring chef, who in his time has

headed as many as 300 cooks in one

kitchen, is quick to admit that he cannot

do what he does on his own.

“I can be the best chef in the world, but

I’m nothing without my team.”

As a book author and host of several TV

cookery shows in the past, Chef Luca’s

presence in the Kenyan hotel industry

has caused an exciting stir. His idea of

incorporating local ingredients to come

up with unique and interesting flavours

to every dish is something worth looking

forward to.

We can only hope that he will bring his

Kenyan culinary experience and art to our

living rooms, if not our libraries.

Why was all this necessary? Didn’t

he have lots of meals he could make

from his work experience in Asia and

Europe?

“Yes, but the idea behind Jiko was to

come up with an authentic Africa menu,”

says Chef Luca. “I wanted to blend

the flavours of the nation and create a

unique menu that both local and foreign

diners would appreciate.”

His year-long research proved

enlightening, as Chef Luca realised two

things that would work to his advantage.

“For one, I discovered that Kenya has

many readily available ingredients that

its people don’t know about,” he says.

“And, two, Kenya’s culinary culture is yet

to be fully developed.”

Chef Luca’s journey of discovery took

him as far as Magadi and deep into

the Karura Forest. He dined in some

of the country’s largest and smallest

restaurants, indulging in such meals as

ugali and omena. He observed for days,

and with a keen eye, how local produce

KENYA ArtS dIArY 2012Author: Kenya Arts Diary Group

Price: Kes 1,500

Newly arrived from Ghana with his mother and elder sister, 11-year-old Harrison Opoku lives on the ninth fl oor of a block of fl ats on an inner-city housing estate. The second-best runner in the whole of Year 7, Harri races through his whole life in his personalised trainers – the Adidas stripes drawn on with marker pen – blissfully unaware of the very real threat all around him. A story of innocence and experience, hope and harsh reality, ‘Pigeon English’ is a spellbinding portrayal of a boy balancing on the edge of manhood and of the forces around him that try to shape the way he falls.

First published in 2011, the ‘Kenya Arts Diary’ taps the growing interest in art and culture by being a one-stop showcase of the best of Kenya’s art and artists in a diary format that is practical and usable. The personal diary is designed to accommodate one week per double-page spread. It is printed in colour on high-quality art paper and contains full page colour reproductions of art by Kenyan artists; a section of blank pages in which to write, draw and collect creative ideas; a directory of contacts in the Kenyan art scene; and advertisements from art galleries, companies, institutions and sponsors who support the arts. This second edition recognises East Africa’s pioneer artists, not all of whom are still active artistically but whose work has inspired and infl uenced the current artistic climate. Jewellery has been included to reveal some of the diversity of Kenyan art.

It HAPPENEd oN tHE WAY to WAr: A Marine’s Path to PeaceAuthor: rye Barcott

Price: Kes 1,990

Rhodia was born to travel. Many journeys were made within her native Kenya, fi rst as a safari guide and later as an ethnographer. As a well-known jewellery designer, Rhodia has travelled all over African and Asia in her search for rare and unusual beads. A few of her journeys were simply to explore the wilder parts of the planet. A few more were ‘journeys of the soul’ and some of these were rather painful. Rhodia tries to see them all as adventures, with a few hard learning experiences thrown in for good measure. Her life has taken her round the world, quite literally from A (Afghanistan) to Z (Zanzibar). Up and down and roundabout, hers is a fascinating story.

In 2000, Rye Barcott spent part of the summer living in 10 ft by 10 ft shacks in the Kibera slum of Nairobi. He was a 20-year-old college student heading into the Marines who sought to better understand ethnic violence. Barcott listened to young people talk about how they survived amid poverty he had never imagined existed; and there he stumbled into friendship with a widowed nurse, Tabitha Atieno Festo, and a tough community organiser, Salim Mohammed. ‘It Happened on the Way to War’ is the gripping story of this unlikely trio’s journey to build a non-governmental organisation and help develop a new generation of leaders. Their organisation, Carolina For Kibera (CFK), is now a pioneer of the movement called ‘participatory development’, drawing interest from Melinda Gates, Barack Obama and other dignitaries.

‘The Good Wife’ examines the lives of legal professionals as affected by their cases and work circumstances. It certainly does not mirror the style of any other legal drama in style, timing or episode structure. It has found a well-deserved niche of its own on current high-quality television drama.

A mockumentary of a group of typical offi ce workers, where the workday consists of ego clashes, inappropriate behaviour and tedium. Michael Scott is a harmlessly deluded and ignorantly insensitive boss who cares about the welfare of his employees while trying to put his own spin on company policy. With an offi ce including the likes of various peers who have their own hang-ups, ‘The Offi ce’ (2005) takes a look at the lives of its co-workers: bored but talented salesman Jim, his mildly sociopathic, butt-kissing enemy Dwight, mildly righteous receptionist Pam and indifferent temp Ryan.

Police offi cer Rick Grimes leads a group of survivors in a world overrun by zombies.

Matt Lucas and David Walliams, the creators of this character-comedy sketch show, delight in all that is mad, bad, quirky and generally bonkers about the people and places of Britain. Based on the highly successful Radio 4 series, ‘Little Britain’ is a hilarious exploration of the British Isles and its curious inhabitants. The programme travels from the Scottish Highlands, through Wales, the tranquil English countryside and the less tranquil council estates of Britain’s inner cities, while the narrator (Tom Baker) adds his insightful and eloquent comments for those less familiar with these fair isles.

Village Beat: How did you come to deal

in groceries?

Jandu: It was totally by accident – a

decision I hadn’t thought through. I was

at the butchery at ABC Place when the

guy there mentioned that the mall had

a butchery, supermarket and offices but

no grocery store. So I jumped at the

opportunity without thinking. Made a lot

of mistakes in the beginning but finally

found my footing. Twenty years later,

here we are getting better and better.

VB: What lessons have you learnt along

the way?

Jandu: Hard work and persistence pays.

VB: Why the name Zucchini?

Jandu: I didn’t give the name much

thought, actually. I was with a friend of

mine at the time. He was reading a book

and the word happened to be in there

somewhere. So he suggested it as an

appropriate name for my new business

venture and it stuck.

VB: What makes Zucchini stand out from

other grocery stores?

and Holland, you can’t really have a fixed

routine. But I’m grateful to have the

most fantastic staff, especially the senior

management.

VB: What future plans do you have for

Zucchini?

Jandu: We want to build the brand,

set our standards even higher while

concentrating on the basics.

VB: What would you say has been your

success formula as a tenant in various

shopping malls, more so The Village Market?

Jandu: Don’t ask what the management

can do for you, ask what you can do

to improve the shopping mall. In other

words, don’t wait for the management

to divert traffic to your shop. If you’re

waiting for something to happen, you’re

going to lose eventually.

It has been two years since Zucchini

Greengrocers Ltd opened its shop at The

Village Market. Since then, the outlet has

seen a rising fl ow of loyal customers, prompting

an expansion in both space and variety.

Today, the grocery store has occupied a bigger

space right below Café Brasserie – Art Caffe, with

a detailed salad bar among its latest additions.

Zucchini’s director, Suki Jandu, calls it a movement

towards health – a desire to serve customers with

‘The Good Stuff’.

Not only does Zucchini stock the freshest fruits and

vegetables, but clients can also purchase fl owers

and fresh salads. Customers can also enjoy a glass

of fresh juice, a fruit smoothie or a cup of coffee in

a relaxing area right outside the grocery shop.

Brief history

Zucchini began in 1992 as a small retail outlet at

ABC Place on Waiyaki Way.

In 1995 the business moved to a larger, state-of-the-

art premises in the same building and continued to

expand as availability of premises allowed.

Late in 2009 the grocery store found a home at

The Village Market, much to the joy of many fruit

and vegetable lovers.

Excellence

Zucchini strives to remain at the top of the market

by providing a wide range of healthy produce

from all over the world. Among the countries

from which Zucchini imports its fresh products are

South Africa, Israel, Spain, Egypt and Holland.

Known for its excellence and quality, Zucchini

supplies major institutions, schools and hotels

with fresh farm produce. Its highly motivated staff

members are trained to select the healthiest fruit

and vegetables, making it easy for customers to

pick what they need from the shelves.

First-time shoppers at Zucchini can expect great

service, top-quality produce and the best prices in

town. You will also notice that Zucchini values its

customers and seeks to make personal connections

with them so as to understand their needs.

Nine wonderful ways to enhance your body and mind

Green tea helps fight the following health

conditions:

• High cholesterol levels and build-up of fat in

the walls of the arteries.

• Asthma/bronchitis – Contains a substance

which relaxes the smooth muscle supporting

the bronchial tubes.

• Breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Green tea

blocks sites that would receive estrogen, so it

stops estrogen from stimulating the growth of

these cancers.

• Cancer of the pancreas, stomach, colon and liver.

3. Red raspberryRed raspberry has been used extensively over

the centuries as a uterine and pelvic toner. It also

reduces menstrual bleeding and relaxes uterine

and intestinal walls.

The use of herbs and supplements is

becoming very popular owing to their

immense effectiveness in treating

various diseases with lesser side effects. Below

are a few of these herbs. Visit Elixir Health at

The Village Market for a wide range of herbal

and non-herbal supplements.

1 . EchinaceaEchinacea is good for the immune system and the

lymphatic system. Its immune stimulating properties

are directly involved in the destruction of bacteria,

viruses and other infectious agents as well as cancer

cells. Echinacea is also good for preventing colds,

allergies coughs, influenza and sore throat.

2. Green teaGreen tea is both a stimulant and an antioxidant.

It contains high levels of polyphenols, which are

known to have strong antioxidant, anti-cancer and

antibiotic properties.

Page 21: Village Beat Magazine. December 2011- January 2012

4. Olive leaf extractOlive leaf extract is a natural antibiotic. It has been

used traditionally for treatment of conditions

related to bacteria, virus, candida and other

protozoan infections. It is used for candida yeast

infections, worms, herpes virus infection and

arthritis and helps keep off colds and flu.

5. Quercertin Quercertin is a bioflavonoid, a type of plant

pigment found in almost all herbs and plant

foods such as onions, red apple, blue green algae

and broccoli. Among other things, it is useful for

allergies, asthma, emphysema and hives. It slows

the production of enzymes that cause allergic

reactions and prevents the multiplication of cells

that secrete histamine, a chemical that causes

inflammation and swelling. It thus increases

the ability of the lungs to deal with dust and

particle pollution. In cancer, quercertin acts as

an antioxidant that blocks destructive structural

changes in cells, which helps to prevent abnormal

cell growth.

6. Hawthorn berry Hawthorn berry contains compounds that support

the heart and circulatory system. It dilates the

coronary blood vessels, lowers blood pressure and

cholesterol and restores heart muscle.

7. Valerian Acts as a sedative and improves circulation. It works

tremendously well in cases of anxiety, fatigue,

insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome, menstrual and

muscle cramps, nervousness and stress.

8. Pau d’arcoOne of the active compounds in pau d’arco is

called lapachol. Pau d’arco extract stimulates

the immune system to produce immune cells

that destroy bacteria and yeast. It is good for

bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic as well as yeast

infections. It also possesses anti-cancer properties.

9. GinsengGinseng is a good general tonic that stimulates

and relaxes the nervous system and encourages

the secretion of hormones, improves stamina,

lowers blood sugar as well as cholesterol

levels and increases resistance to disease.

Used internally, ginseng is believed to be a

powerful adaptogenic aphrodisiac that will

affect any system in the body that is out of

balance. In Chinese medicine it is used to

quickly restore balance, reducing the effect

of ageing and enhancing physical, sexual and

Page 31: Village Beat Magazine. December 2011- January 2012

The festive season comes with

a lot of giving. In fact, giving

is what makes Christmas the

cheerful and merry affair that it is.

When choosing a gift for a friend,

colleague or partner, we all strive

to be unique in our choice of an

appropriate gift. And though our

loved ones may be all too aware of

our tastes, we don’t want to come

across as predictable. Certainly not too

cheap either, but then again, we have

to watch our spending. So therein lies

the big question: what will you give

your friends and family this year?

African-inspired Christmas gifts are not

only unique but also available locally.

They range from ethnic home décor

and artistic kitchen cutlery to distinctive

jewellery and accessories. African-

inspired gifts are often affordable and,

better still, eco-friendly. Most are made

from safe, non-toxic, recyclable material.

Owing to their artistic features, African

inspired gifts often tell a story. These

interesting stories – of how the artefact

was made, who made it and why it was

made – make for good conversations

with friends and family.

The Village Market offers a variety of

shops selling African-inspired gifts,

fashion accessories and other household

items. The Friday Maasai Market is also

a great place to shop for beautiful arts

and crafts made in Kenya. From the

original to the exotic, there are gifts and

souvenirs sampled by over 350 exhibitors

whose items capture the

fl avour, creativity and

diversity of Africa.
