Since the official launch in November 2013, the excitement surrounding Village by the Shore has been palpable as the

program continues to build momentum within the community. Each week, dozens of inquiries come in from both caregivers and older adults looking for services that the Village offers. With every new phone call or email, we feel proud knowing that our program is providing quality, convenient services within the community.

The start of 2014 was very exciting for Village by the Shore. In late January, we hosted a volunteer appreciation wine and cheese reception where community mem-bers were able to learn more about the program and what it offers. This was an extremely successful event as 12 attendees registered with the Village either as a member, volunteer or Service Partner. We also held our first member luncheon, where Village members socialized and got to know each other. It was amazing to watch these new friendships emerge just within a short period of time.

With the continued growth of the program, we are eager to get the word out about this program and the services it of-fers. We are excited to work with other organizations to bring the community events that are educational and relevant such

as the upcoming Senior & Adult Expo. Held on September 18th at the Jewish Community Center, this event will feature screenings, educational presentations, prizes and refresh-ments.

Also, the upcoming JFS House Tour, the main fundraising event for Village by the Shore, is a great socialization event for all to enjoy. The 27th Annual House Tour, held August 4, 2014 from 10 am – 4 pm, features an exclusive tour inside six to eight of Absecon Island’s most luxurious Downbeach

homes. For a limited time, in addition to our intro-ductory membership rate of $180 a year if pre-paid, anyone who purchases an annual Village member-

ship by June 30th will receive a complimentary ticket to the House Tour.

Village by the Shore is a valuable program that offers es-sential services to adults (50+) in our community. Not only is the Village a wonderful asset to members, but also to volunteers and Service Partners. Whether receiving support, helping your neighbors or providing expert services, every-one can get involved with Village by the Shore in one way or another. As we move forward the Village will continue to grow and make a positive impact within this community.

R uth, a senior resident of Atlantic City, often felt isolated from the community

due to the fact that she doesn’t drive any-more. She enjoys socializing with others and meeting new people, but found she wasn’t doing that often due to transporta-tion barriers. To help with this issue, Ruth inquired about JFS’ newest initiative, Vil-lage by the Shore. She was no stranger to JFS, having been an Older Adult client for many years. However, with the expanded services offered through the Village, Ruth saw the value of this program and became its first member in November 2013.

In the subsequent months, Ruth has uti-lized the transportation assistance by get-ting rides to doctor’s appointments, receiv-ing grocery assistance and even attended the Village member luncheon. In March, she found these services to be so helpful that she convinced her brother, David, to become a Village member as well.

“Due to the fact that Ruth and I don’t drive anymore, the benefit of transporta-

tion means getting out more and leading more independent and active lives,” said David. “I am excited to meet new people, and go out to dinner with my sister a little more often.”

David and Ruth have been summering in Atlantic City together since they were kids at their aunt’s boarding house. David, a retired accountant, who spent most of his life in New York, relocated to Atlantic City, followed shortly thereafter by Ruth, who relocated from California where she worked for a software company.

With family that lives an hour away, it is

nice that David and Ruth have each other so close, only a couple of floors apart in the Berkley Apartments. Now that they are Village members, they also have a woven network of providers, volunteers and Care Coordinators looking after them.

“Having access to a wonderful volun-teer network is extremely helpful to me and makes my life significantly easier,” said Ruth. “It is hard for me to maneu-ver around the store so having volunteers bring me items that I need is a great help and a truly valuable service.”

Ruth and David are excited to par-ticipate in new activities. They have dis-cussed using some of their own talents to volunteer to help others. Ruth, an avid card player, hopes to attend the Card Par-ty, while David wants to learn more about Medicare during an upcoming seminar.

Although they say a lot has changed since they came here when they were kids, both still love the shore and enjoy living so close to the beach. Now, Village by the Shore helps them age comfortably in their own homes while continuing to enjoy all this community has to offer.

reer as a professional social worker. She served as Director of Older Adult Services for Jewish Family Service for the past de-cade, specializing in counseling and care coordination. Since joining JFS in 1995, BJ has undertaken many initiatives to im-prove the quality of life for older adults in Atlantic County.

Under her leadership, the agency imple-mented the Senior Transportation Op-tions Program (STOP) as well as diabetes education and improved Kosher Meals-on-Wheels delivery. As a community part-ner liaison, she works hand-in-hand with the Richard Stockton Holocaust Resource Center to bring a variety of services, so-cialization activities and programs to Holo-caust Survivors in the community.

BJ has been instrumental in envisioning and developing Village by the Shore. As the Associate Director, she oversees all as-pects of client services including care co-ordination, counseling, nutrition assistance

and transportation. Her supervisory skills have paved the way for her new role with Village by the Shore.

This year BJ has been designated as the agency’s point person for The Solutions to Senior HungerTM program. Funded by Ma-zon, a Jewish Response to Hunger with additional support through the Walmart Foundation, this initiative is designed to spread awareness that there is Supple-mental Nutrition Assistance, or SNAP benefits, that community members might be eligible to receive. Under BJ’s leader-ship, the outreach efforts include educat-ing the senior population through healthy lifestyle workshops, administering SNAP application assistance and advocating on behalf of older adults in the community. She is currently working with Village by the Shore staff to conduct outreach at various community activities including food drives, Village by the Shore events, local libraries and senior centers.

BJ Pinnock received her master’s degree in Social Work from Rutgers University. In her spare time, she enjoys bird-watching, travelling and gardening.

With more Americans living well beyond their 70’s, more adult children, especially the baby boomer generation, are put in a position where they have to be caregivers for their aging par-ents. Approximately 43.5 million Americans currently tackle the responsibility of regular caregiving for an older relative or friend, according to the National Alliance for Caregiving.

When caring for a parent, chil-dren have a number of things to think about. Decisions need to be made on things such as benefits, insurance, legal affairs, finances, healthcare and hous-ing. Discussing these matters with your parent early on will significantly help with the deci-sion making process later, es-pecially if a parent were to de-velop dementia or Alzheimer’s. Communication and behavioral challenges can compound the complexity of providing care.

Who Should Be the Primary Caregiver?

If you have siblings or other close relatives, discuss with them each person’s responsibilities when it comes to parent care. Financial stability, geographic location and relationship with the parent will help determine who the primary caregiver should be. With this being said, primary caregivers do not have to do everything on their own. Even from a distance siblings and relatives can help with phone calls, paperwork and other tasks.

Difficult Decisions“Should I take my parent’s car keys away?” “Is it safe for

my parent to live home alone?” Questions such as these are ones you will ask yourself as the primary caregiver. These are especially emotional and difficult decisions to make re-garding your parent. It is important to have a support system

such as your spouse, chil-dren or friends willing to listen and guide you dur-ing these emotional times. Also, consider consulting a doctor or counselor if you feel you need guid-ance with challenging de-cisions.

Financial Responsibility

The financial aspects of caring for an aging parent need to be taken into con-sideration for the sake of your parent, but also for you as the caregiver. The average cost of nursing home care is $93,000 per year. The boomer genera-tion, many of whom are close to retirement age, are staying in the work-force longer for financial

reasons, one of them being caring for an aging parent. Ac-cording to data from the National Alliance for Caregiving, an estimated 65 million people in the U.S. are unpaid family caregivers.

Many caregivers don’t realize they may be able to receive financial benefits or assistance by claiming their parent as a dependent on their tax return, deducting medical expens-es and/or receiving benefits from long term care insurance. There are also many benefits the parent may be eligible for such as Medicaid, Medicare, federal cash benefits, food as-sistance, prescription drug discounts, veteran’s benefits and others. A JFS care coordinator can help you find financial benefits for which you and your parent may be eligible.

Village by the Shore Offers AssistanceDo you live out of town and worry about your parent or

can’t check on them as often as you like? One of the many benefits of a Village by the Shore membership is access to friendly visits and phone check-in’s. Allow Village care co-ordinators to share your daily tasks with you, helping you to feel more secure when you are physically unable to be there for your parent. A Village by the Shore membership can give you peace of mind, knowing your parent is being looked after by caring, compassionate professionals and community members.

T ired of spending hours at the grocery store? Is shopping too difficult because of having to walk aisle after aisle? Having

guests and need to stock up on food? Whatever the reason may be, a Village by the Shore member-

ship can offer you the convenience and luxury of grocery assis-tance. Grocery assistance is offered through The James Kling-hoffer Nursing and Nutrition Program, an entity of Village by the Shore, and provides an extremely easy process to members. With a quick phone call, you can receive the wonderful benefit of

grocery assistance. Care Coordina-

tors and volunteers will work within your schedule to ensure you have your gro-ceries in a timely manner. Grocery as-sistance is not only convenient but also helps members plan ahead for nu-tritious meals. Do you have a prefer-ence between pulp or no-pulp orange juice? Whatever your preference is, a JFS Care Coordi-nator will assist you

with your grocery list and make it customizable to your needs and wants. After completing your grocery list, we will place your grocery order online. A Village volunteer will then pick up the groceries from the store, deliver them to your home and unload and put away your purchases. This benefit allows members to still enjoy many of the foods they love while also making health-ier choices.

“As a delivery volunteer for The James Klinghoffer Nursing & Nutrition Program I am able to bring groceries to those who are homebound, increasing their quality of life while living indepen-dently in their own home,” explained Sissy Feldman, Village Deliv-ery Volunteer.

Members also have access to Village by the Shore Nurse Edu-cator, Maggie Weaver, who helps to create specialized diets and meal plans for members with health concerns such as diabetes.

Additionally, online grocery ordering is provided by Shoprite from Home, which usually charges a $10 fee for this service. This fee is waived for Village members as it is part of the mem-bership benefits.

In addition to grocery assistance, Village by the Shore also offers Kosher Meals on Wheels for those who follow Kosher dietary guidelines.

“Getting a Village by the Shore membership was one of the best decisions I have ever made,” said a Village member. “I receive grocery assistance multiple times per month while also utilizing other services such as transportation and home main-tenance all included for the low cost of $18 per month.”
